Mh. John Samweli Malecela

Family of 41 Evicted and Deported from Kagera!

By Joseph Sekiku, Radio FADECO, Karagwe

A family of 41 family members from Murongo Village in Murongo Ward, Kyerwa district, Kagera Region was rounded up by immigration officers together with local security officer (MUGAMBO) at 3.00 a.m and forced them to leave the country, alleging them to be living in the country illegally. The head of this family is called Erika, 88 years old.
This family was in the morning of 21.1.2014 evicted and damped in the NO MANS LAND area, on the bridge separating Tanzania and Uganda. The family has since been forced to camp on the bridge succumbing to rains, sun, mosquitoes, cold and worse the dangers of falling into the Kagera river beneath the bridge and to being devoured by a crocodile that is feared living in the nearby waters of the Kagera River below the bridge.
Attempt to secure their freedom is hitting a dead rock following a somewhat coordinated syndicate to evict this family by the local authorities over a revenue sharing issues over income accruing from rental of a land space onto which Vodacom and airtel have erected their telecom towers.
The story behind is that, in the recent past, a wrangle arose between Mzee Erika who owns a piece of land that was identified as a suitable spot for the erection of the telecom towers by Vodacom. The Village chairman became envious on learning that Mzee Erika was promised a regular monthly income for rental of his land for the mast. The wrangle was resolved in a regional court at Bukoba when Mr. Erika was declared rightful owner of the land and therefore legal beneficiary of the rent from Vodacom.
Later on airtel also came to invest in the area and Mzee Erika land was again seen as the best spot for the airtel telcom tower. This made the Village chairman more envious. It is told by the villages that were interviewed that, the village chairman decided to connive with other authorities including the immigration and other officers and blacklisted Mzee E\rika as a Ugandan living illegally in Tanzania. Illegal persons have no right to own property (land in Tanzania) and so with this situation, the village chairman working together with the immigration officers descended on this family and branded them illegal immigrants and so inhumanly rounded them at 3.00 a.m and have since been dumped at the bridge of Murongo.
Radio FADECO learnt of the ordeal on 25.1.2014 following a tip off by our news correspondent in the area. The report mentioned the affected family was starving and in danger since having been damped at the bridge since 21.1.2014.
A team of FADECO RADIO Staff went to the scene arriving there at 4.00 a.m on 25.1.2014 to follow up the story. On arriving at Murongo border, the family was found lying on the bridge site covered in ramshackled clothes since there were not allowed to carry any belongings. The affected include 23 males and 18 females. There are 3 primary school going children who since have been denied to go to school, 4 infants below the age of 5 and 3 babies stills suckling.
FINDINGS:
The head of the family is called  Mzee Elika Tibahulira , 88 years old and has been living in the area since he was born and his wife is called  Mole Tibahulira aged 58. They have their children and grandchildren together making a total of 41 persons.
As journalists, we have tried to make the preliminary investigation into the matter:
Immigration officers at Murongo border allege these are illegal immigrants, living in Tanzania since that time even before independence!! Over the revenue sharing issue they say, they are aware of it/ They say this mzee has no right to own that land.
Asked why the decided to dump these people in no-man land, they say it is up to them to find their way to where they came from.
FADECO RADIO has consulted the different government officers with no solution. The regional commissioner orderd that these people be returned to Tanzania (removed from the bridge) and taken to police and later to court which would determine their citizen staus. The district Commissioner on his part said that these people have to find their way and never to return to their homes.

26.1.2014 in the morning hours, on orders from the Regional Commissioner, the 41 people were removed by the immigration officers and taken to a nearby police post at Murongo and left there, on word that they would later be taken to court to answer charges.
By 6.00 P.M these people were still at the police station without any word from the immigration officers. Radio fadeco visited them and found they were given shelter at the police station and said, they were awaiting to be taken to court.

27.1.2014 at 5.00 p.m after 24 hours, without charges being opened against them, they were forced to go back to the immigration office by the immigration officers. On reaching the office, they were forced to leave the country, go back to the bridge they have been living since eviction on 21.1.2014.
Reports coming from witnesses at the border has told that, these people refused and as a reaction to this, they have bees subjected to thorough beating. Mzee Erika is reported in very critical condition following the beating (and several days of starvation and age|). Small children some of whom are very sick and their mothers have been severely beaten up. And their situation is at stake.
FADECO RADIO has communicated with the Regional Commissioner who has promised to take up the matter and ensure their safety and that where possible these people be brought to court of law.
---------------------
OBSERVATIONS:
These people are severely malnourished and many of them looking wearly. They have been living in the open in the cold since 21.1.2014. They are inhumanly treated. A good samaritam has offered them a plastic sheet to cover themselves. With the current rains, they are subjected to this gross torture.
Would anybody they help to take up this matter? Several issues are hidden in the whole saga. We request you to intervene and help us. As I write this, news reaching me is that, the life of Mzee Erika is at stake having succumbed to beating by the immigration officer famous as JEMBE. One of the affected persons is called George and has a telephone contact 0759 336422. The plight of this people has different dimensions and the course events seem to show some hidden things leading me to conclude that the alleged illegal residence might not be the real issue but more so revenue sharing.

A 31-year-old nun has given birth to a baby boy in Rieti, Italy, after experiencing abdominal pains she thought were stomach cramps.
After she was taken to a hospital, she gave birth to a baby and named him Francis after the current pope. The nun, originally from El Salvador, claims she had no idea she was pregnant.
The sister belongs to a convent which is located near the city of Rieti, which has a population of 47,700.
The nun belongs to the "Little Disciples of Jesus'' convent in Campomoro near Rieti, which manages an old people's home.
As news of the nun's pregnancy has spread, the mayor of Rieti, Simone Petrangi, asked local residents and media to give the woman privacy.
Clothes and donations have been collected and sent to the hospital where she gave birth.
"I did not know I was pregnant. I only felt a stomach pain," she told the Ansa news agency.
Other nuns at the convent also expressed shock at the mysterious pregnancy of a holy sister at their order, saying they were "very surprised", according to Italian media reports.
Don Fabrizio Borrelio, a local pastor, says he believes that the nun is telling the truth about being unaware of her pregnancy. He said the nun plans to take care of the baby herself.
The results of a study on reproductive health, published in the British Medical Journal, revealed that one in 200 US women claim to have given birth without ever having had sexual intercourse.
The BMJ reports that of the women who took part in the study, 45 (0.5%) reported at least one virgin pregnancy, "unrelated to the use of assisted reproductive technology".
They claim to have conceived without vaginal intercourse or in-vitro fertilisation (IVF).
The BMJ article notes that virgin births, or parthenogenesis (from the Greek parthenos for virgin and genesis for birth), can occur in non-humans as a consequence of "asexual reproduction, where growth and development of the embryo occurs without fertilisation".
However, the authors of the study, entitled "Like a virgin (mother)", warn that researchers need to take into account the possibility of fallible memory on the part of respondents.

Tunamkumbuka Mh. Patrice Lumumba

Mh.

Patrice Lumumba: the most important assassination of the 20th century

The US-sponsored plot to kill Patrice Lumumba, the hero of Congolese independence, took place 50 years ago today

Patrice Lumumba, the first legally elected prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), was assassinated 50 years ago today, on 17 January, 1961. This heinous crime was a culmination of two inter-related assassination plots by American and Belgian governments, which used Congolese accomplices and a Belgian execution squad to carry out the deed.
Ludo De Witte, the Belgian author of the best book on this crime, qualifies it as "the most important assassination of the 20th century". The assassination's historical importance lies in a multitude of factors, the most pertinent being the global context in which it took place, its impact on Congolese politics since then and Lumumba's overall legacy as a nationalist leader.
For 126 years, the US and Belgium have played key roles in shaping Congo's destiny. In April 1884, seven months before the Berlin Congress, the US became the first country in the world to recognise the claims of King Leopold II of the Belgians to the territories of the Congo Basin.
When the atrocities related to brutal economic exploitation in Leopold's Congo Free State resulted in millions of fatalities, the US joined other world powers to force Belgium to take over the country as a regular colony. And it was during the colonial period that the US acquired a strategic stake in the enormous natural wealth of the Congo, following its use of the uranium from Congolese mines to manufacture the first atomic weapons, the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs.
With the outbreak of the cold war, it was inevitable that the US and its western allies would not be prepared to let Africans have effective control over strategic raw materials, lest these fall in the hands of their enemies in the Soviet camp. It is in this regard that Patrice Lumumba's determination to achieve genuine independence and to have full control over Congo's resources in order to utilise them to improve the living conditions of our people was perceived as a threat to western interests. To fight him, the US and Belgium used all the tools and resources at their disposal, including the United Nations secretariat, under Dag Hammarskjöld and Ralph Bunche, to buy the support of Lumumba's Congolese rivals , and hired killers.
In Congo, Lumumba's assassination is rightly viewed as the country's original sin. Coming less than seven months after independence (on 30 June, 1960), it was a stumbling block to the ideals of national unity, economic independence and pan-African solidarity that Lumumba had championed, as well as a shattering blow to the hopes of millions of Congolese for freedom and material prosperity.
The assassination took place at a time when the country had fallen under four separate governments: the central government in Kinshasa (then Léopoldville); a rival central government by Lumumba's followers in Kisangani (then Stanleyville); and the secessionist regimes in the mineral-rich provinces of Katanga and South Kasai. Since Lumumba's physical elimination had removed what the west saw as the major threat to their interests in the Congo, internationally-led efforts were undertaken to restore the authority of the moderate and pro-western regime in Kinshasa over the entire country. These resulted in ending the Lumumbist regime in Kisangani in August 1961, the secession of South Kasai in September 1962, and the Katanga secession in January 1963.
No sooner did this unification process end than a radical social movement for a "second independence" arose to challenge the neocolonial state and its pro-western leadership. This mass movement of peasants, workers, the urban unemployed, students and lower civil servants found an eager leadership among Lumumba's lieutenants, most of whom had regrouped to establish a National Liberation Council (CNL) in October 1963 in Brazzaville, across the Congo river from Kinshasa. The strengths and weaknesses of this movement may serve as a way of gauging the overall legacy of Patrice Lumumba for Congo and Africa as a whole.
The most positive aspect of this legacy was manifest in the selfless devotion of Pierre Mulele to radical change for purposes of meeting the deepest aspirations of the Congolese people for democracy and social progress. On the other hand, the CNL leadership, which included Christophe Gbenye and Laurent-Désiré Kabila, was more interested in power and its attendant privileges than in the people's welfare. This is Lumumbism in words rather than in deeds. As president three decades later, Laurent Kabila did little to move from words to deeds.
More importantly, the greatest legacy that Lumumba left for Congo is the ideal of national unity. Recently, a Congolese radio station asked me whether the independence of South Sudan should be a matter of concern with respect to national unity in the Congo. I responded that since Patrice Lumumba has died for Congo's unity, our people will remain utterly steadfast in their defence of our national unity.

No Evidence of Survival Advantage for Type 2 Diabetes Patients who are Overweight or Obese

From the New England Journal of Medicine

January 15, 2014

Boston, MA — Being overweight or obese does not lead to improved survival among patients with type 2 diabetes. The large-scale study led by Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) researchers refutes previous studies that have suggested that, for people with diabetes, being overweight or obese could lead to lower mortality for people compared with normal-weight persons—the so-called “obesity paradox.”

The study appears in the January 16 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

“These data dispel the notion that being overweight or obese confers survival advantage among diabetic patients,” said Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at HSPH and senior author of the study. “Clearly, weight management is an important therapeutic strategy for overweight or obese individuals with type 2 diabetes.”

The researchers analyzed data from 8,970 women in the Brigham and Women’s Hospital-based Nurses’ Health Study (NHS) and 2,457 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS) with type 2 diabetes. They calculated participants’ body-mass index (BMI) shortly before the diagnosis of diabetes and excluded participants reporting a history of diabetes at baseline or cardiovascular disease or cancer before they were diagnosed with diabetes; underweight participants were also excluded. Participants were followed for a maximum of 36 years (NHS) and 26 years (HPFS). A total of 3,083 deaths were recorded.

The results showed a positive association between BMI at the time of diabetes diagnosis and risk of death from all causes. The lowest risk of death was observed among people of normal weight. Lower mortality was not observed among overweight or obese participants, that is, the findings showed no benefit from being overweight or obese. In addition, there was a dose-response relationship between BMI and mortality among people who had never smoked, such that a higher BMI just prior to diabetes diagnosis was associated with a higher risk of death. This trend was less pronounced among smokers because smokers tend to be leaner than nonsmokers but they have increased risk of death.

The results contradict some previous studies that had shown a benefit—lower risk of death—for patients with chronic illnesses, such as type 2 diabetes, and excess adiposity. The authors cite several limitations in those studies, including small sample sizes, measurement of BMI years after diabetes diagnosis, and failure to properly assess biases from smoking and undiagnosed chronic diseases, which often lead to weight loss.

“In most studies of BMI and mortality, ‘normal weight’ reference groups are comprised of not only those who are lean and healthy, but also smokers as well as people with existing or undiagnosed illnesses. This can skew the relationship between weight and mortality to make the normal weight group seem worse off than the overweight and obese groups. As a result, people with higher BMIs might have artificially improved survival rates,” said Deirdre Tobias, lead author of the paper and a research fellow in the Department of Nutrition at HSPH. “After carefully controlling for many of these factors in our analysis, we observed that excess weight in those with diabetes was not advantageous for survival. These findings underscore the importance of addressing methodological biases in the analysis of BMI and mortality.”

The study was supported by National Institutes of Health grants (UM1 CA167552, UM1 CA176726, P01 CA87969, R01 HL034594, P01 CA055075, DK58845, CA55075, CA87969, HL34594, P30 DK46200, and 1U54CA155626-01) and the American Diabetes Association (7-12-MN-34).

Mzee George Liundi Afariki Dunia

Taarifa kutoka Tanzania, zinasema kuwa Mzee George Liundi, amefariki dunia leo.  Nakumbuka kazi aliyofanya wakati ule waliporuhusu vyama vingi Tanzania.  Yeye alikuwa Msajili.

Mungu ailaze roho yaka mahala pema mbinguni. Amen.

*****************************************
KWA HISANI YA KAKA MAGGID MJENGWA

TANZIA: NDUGU GEORGE LIUNDI AFARIKI DUNIA

Ndugu zangu,

( Raia Mwema)

Unyonyaji wa Akina Mama!

A profound picture of a woman giving her all to someone who has nothing to offer her back. The transfer of ENERGY is REAL! If you're constantly surrounded by, interacting with, having sex with, pouring your self into an empty person(s), than eventually, they WILL suck you completely dry. This concept should be applied across the board… significant others, friends, family even. It's LEVELS to this life shit! Know your worth! You can not be out here doing the same things expecting CHANGE. You can not surround your self with stagnant energy and except growth, wealth and success. Align yourself with people, places and things that don't leave you spiritually skin and bones!

Tanzania Finance Minister Dies at Age 63 After Long Illness

Tanzanian Finance Minister William Mgimwa died yesterday at a South African hospital after a long unspecified illness, the East African nation’s presidency said.
Mgimwa, 63, was appointed in May 2012 in a cabinet reorganization, following a report by the national audit office that showed the misuse of public funds, according to the Dar es Salaam-based, state-run Daily News newspaper. Last year, Mgimwa announced the country plans to secure an international credit rating in the 12 months through June, ahead of a Eurobond sale.
“I do not have enough words to describe my shock and sadness following reports of the death of Mr. Mgimwa,” said Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, who visited Mgimwa twice in the hospital, according to the statement.
Mgimwa, a member of parliament since 2010, is a former principal at the Bank of Tanzania’s training institute and he worked at the National Bank of Commerce from 1980 to 2000.
Deputy Finance Minister Saada Mkuya Salum said she is acting as finance minister, a role she’s held since Mgimwa was admitted to the Pretoria-based Kloof Mediclinic. She described Mgimwa as a team leader and a fast learner on the job.
“The nation has lost one of its spirited servants,” Salum said today in a phone interview.
Mgimwa saw the value in spurring investment and promoting stability to help African nations develop, South African Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said today in an e-mailed statement.
Tanzania is sub-Saharan Africa’s fourth-largest gold producer, after South Africa, Ghana and Mali, and it holds the world’s only known deposit of tanzanite. The country is a natural gas producer and has the largest gas volumes in East Africa after Mozambique.
