Tanzanian Appointed Head of Rusumo Power Project

A TANZANIAN national, Engineer Joackim Joseph, has been appointed the first Managing Director of the 80MW Rusumo Power Project that is set to benefit Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.

The Minister for Energy and Minerals, Prof Sospeter Muhongo, made the revelation, saying he was proud that a Tanzanian has been appointed to manage the project, which will be headquartered in Kigali, Rwanda.

"We should also not forget that another Tanzanian, Lebbi Changula, was recently appointed Executive Secretary of the Eastern Africa Power Pool based in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia," Prof Muhongo boasted.

Eng. Joseph has a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science in Engineering. Before his appointment, he was the coordinator of Millennium Challenge Account-Tanzania energy projects implemented by the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco).

At Tanesco, he also worked as programme manager for grid rehabilitation and upgrading. The Rusumo Power Station is a proposed hydropower plant, with initial planned capacity installation of 80MW when completed.

The project will involve construction of a dam and a 90MW reservoir design had been envisaged, but was abandoned in favour of an 80MW design with a smaller environmental impact and an estimated cost of US$300 million as opposed to US$400 million for the bigger project.

The World Bank announced in August, 2013 that it had approved the funding needed for the project Power generated from Rusumo will be shared equally among Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania and it will be distributed from the generation plant via 220 kV transmission lines to transmission stations in Gitega in Burundi, Kigali in Rwanda and to Nyakanazi in Tanzania.

Today, I received extremely disturbing screen shots of posts by an Indian lady who is calling Tanzanians of African origin "monkeys". She had the audacity to attack people that stood up to her indicating that what she did was wrong but she stuck to her guns and continued to call them monkeys and other Non Tanzanians with different ethnic background "monkey lovers". This has extremely upset me to no end. How can this be happening in our country and it is done by a person who is well known in Dar with various businesses which some of us frequent often? I am hoping that someone has hacked her account and can therefore excuse the contents of the said posts. However, if the account is not hacked then we need to share these posts as the original posts have since been deleted in Crime Alert Tanzania FB Page to ensure that the appropriate authorities take this matter seriously and do something against such inappropriate racist language. Please note that I do not welcome any comments slandering Indians as majority of my friends are of Indian origin both in and outside of Tanzania and they are great people with deep respect for other human beings regardless of their ethnic background.

Kwa upande wake Mzee wa ‘Sumu ya Teja’, Vitali Maembe amesema pamoja na kuwa hii ni mara ya kwanza kupanda Mlima Kilimanjaro amefanya mazoezi ya kutosha kumuwezesha kufika kwenye kilele jambo ambalo ni ndoto yake kubwa kama mwanamapinduzi wa kimuziki.

Culture and Development East Africa (CDEA) ni shirika lisilo la kiserikali linalotoa huduma kwa wasanii, viongozi wa utamaduni, wajasiriamali, maafisa utamaduni na mipango miji. Pia hufanya kazi na Mashirika makubwa ya kimaendeleo, taasisi za kiraia na Elimu katika maendeleo ya utamaduni, mipango na utekelezaji kwa Tanzania na Ukanda wa Afrika Mashariki kwa ujumla.

Balozi wa kampeni ya kuchangisha fedha, “FUN FOR FUNDS” mwanamuziki mzalendo mzee wa ‘Sumu ya Teja’ , Vitali Maembe akizungumza na waandishi wa habari ambapo amewataka wasanii wenzake kuungana kuwa kitu kimoja katika kukuza utamaduni wetu kwa kubadilishana uzoefu wa kazi zao bila choyo.

Mjumbe wa bodi ya shirika lisilo la kiserikali la Culture and Development East Africa (CDEA), Rose Haji Mwalimu akitoa rai kwa waandishi wa habari waliohudhuria mkutano huo (hawapo pichani) na kuwataka kutumia kalamu zao vizuri na kuhakikisha kampeni hii inafanikiwa.

Wazazi wangu, Dr. Aleck na Rita Che-Mponda walisherekea miaka 52 ya Ndoa jana mjini Dar es Salaam. Walibarikiwa Kanisani St. Alban  na Father Ramadhani na Father Sebo. Wazzai wangu walifunga ndoa Septemba 1, 1962.
