Josiah Kibira University in Bukoba

This summer, president Jakaya Kikwete was in Bukoba to attend the 100 anniversary of the Lutheran Church in the area. As part of those festivities, Josiah Kibira University College was dedicated.

In his speech, Kikwete noted that it was about time for Bukoba to have a university since Bukoba people are known to be "Nshomile" (Booksmart) and yet had no university in the area. The comment was all in good fun, the crowd reciprocated with a weak cheer and laughter.

Kunguni Summit

Wadau, kunguni wamerudi Marekani.

Bedbug Outbreak: Grim Summit on How to Fight Infestation

It's possible that bedbugs are simply the latest in a long string of public panics over epidemics that eventually proved to be manageable, from killer bees to bird flu. But that would not quite capture the grim mood of a big bedbug summit, held the past two days at a hotel near Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. More than 350 people gathered at the two-day event, which sold out five weeks in advance.

One scientist showed, using DNA evidence, how the bugs hop blithely from continent to continent on clothing, carry-ons, backpacks and purses. Another tracked the eruption of bedbug colonies through a single multistory apartment building. Another flashed a photograph of a robust bedbug literally glistening with drops of poison rolling off its back. (See pictures of bedbugs.)

Judging by the number of note-taking exterminators at the summit, however, even pest-control professionals are still searching for tips. There is no perfect insecticide. Even if DDT were magically restored to the market, bedbugs have evolved a resistance to their once mortal foe. Many professionals advise clients to zip their mattresses and box springs into impermeable casings, but not all products are created equal. Summit organizer Phillip Cooper says he has seen hungry bugs squeeze between the zipper teeth of ineffective mattress cases.

The exhibition hall in Chicago suggested the range of bedbug-fighting strategies. Mobile ovens offered to bake the bugs to death. ("Heat is the bedbug's Achilles' heel," says White.) Powerful vacuums proposed to suck them to oblivion. Some experts favored steaming; some favored poison dust; some suggested electrocution. A woman from Australia claimed to have eliminated her infestation by installing simple barriers on her bed legs and waiting patiently for the bugs to starve. (See pictures of the fascinating, frightening world of insects.)

A better solution, experts agree, is to avoid importing bedbugs in the first place. Be cautious in public places where upholstered or wooden surfaces meet backpacks and purses - movie theaters, public libraries, even changing tables in public restrooms. Travelers should inspect hotel beds and headboards for signs of bedbugs; keep suitcases off the bed; unpack outside upon returning home; and put travel clothes immediately into a hot-water wash. At least one vendor offers plastic bags that dissolve in the laundry, so that travel clothes can be sealed at the hotel and dropped directly into the hot-water cycle. If you really want to be thorough, you can buy a $330 PackTite oven designed to bake your luggage to a bug-killing temperature. Otherwise, it might help to seal your suitcase in a plastic garbage bag.

The good news about bedbugs is that they don't appear to transmit diseases. And summit organizers think awareness and innovation should eventually make bedbugs a manageable problem for most people. "Mark my words: In the next 10 years, a silver bullet will be found," says organizer Phillip Cooper. "Somebody will figure out how to deal with bedbugs, and after that, it will be just another pest, like roaches or yellow jackets."

Morgan Freeman, Missus Finalize Divorce

Look out, ladies, Morgan Freeman is officially a free man.

A Mississippi judge has finalized the divorce of the Academy Award-winning actor from his second wife of 26 years, Myrna Colley-Lee.

Freeman's Jackson-based lawyer, William R. Wright, tells E! News that a divorce decree was issued on Wednesday, though terms were kept under seal.

"There's no waiting period, there was no trial and they reached an amicable settlement settlement," said the legal eagle. "He is just happy that they can both move on."

The Dark Knight star married Colley-Lee, a theater and film costume designer, on June 16, 1984, and the couple were together during Freeman's rise to the top of the film world as one of Hollywood's most durable and acclaimed actors.

In August 2008, however, the thesp's business manager announced the pair had filed for divorce after separating the previous December. No reason was given for the split, but the divorce petition came just days after Freeman was involved in a scary car crash with a female friend of the family's.

Freeman, 73, was previously hitched to Jeanette Adair Bradshaw from 1967 to 1979.

Nigerian advance-fee scammer gets 12 years

Over five years, the man racked up more than $1.3 million

A Nigerian man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for sending out fraudulent e-mails offering victims big bucks in exchange for moving cash to the United States.

Okpako Mike Diamreyan, 31, was sentenced to 151 months of prison Wednesday by United States District Judge Janet Hall in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Diamreyan made more than US$1.3 million in a scam that suckered 67 victims between 2004 to 2009, prosecutors said. This type of fraud, called an advance-fee scam, was the number-one type of Internet fraud in 2009, according to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. Last year, advance-fee fraud accounted for nearly 17 percent of the Internet fraud logged by the FBI.

Diamreyan pretended to be different people -- Prince Nana Kamokai of Sierra Leone or an airport director from Ghana, for example. He said he needed to move between $11.5 million and $23.4 million out of the country and offered victims 20 percent of the funds, if they would help him out.

After using fake documentation to convince his victims that he was legitimate, Diamreyan would get them to wire him different types of fees such as "PIN code fees" or courier services charges with the understanding that they would then get the money. These fees would pile up, but the promised money never arrived.

The scam left "many individuals and their families in financial ruin," the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement.

Diamreyan immigrated to the United States in 2008 and allegedly told an acquaintance that he wanted to make $1 million or so before going home to Nigeria: "i want to forget america and come back home... once i take like 1m or half m," prosecutors quote him as saying.

He was arrested in August 2009 and found guilty by a jury in February.

Megabus Yapata Ajali! Watu Wanne Wamefariki!

(pichani Megabus iliyopata ajali New York)

Amen.

*************************************************
SALINA, N.Y. (AP) - A double-decker bus traveling off its route hit a low railroad bridge overhead and flipped on its side early Saturday, killing four people and critically injuring others, authorities said.

The Megabus was carrying more than two dozen people when it rammed into the bridge around 2:30 a.m. on the Onondaga Lake Parkway in Salina, a suburb of Syracuse in central New York.

Twenty-four people were taken to hospitals, including some suffering from critical injuries.

The bus was too tall to make it under the low-hanging span, said Larry Ives, supervisor of dispatch operations for the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department.

It struck the bridge between two large signs warning that the clearance was 10 feet, 9 inches, photographs from WSYR-TV showed. The top level of the bus was crushed and partially peeled back in the front.

The driver of the bus had head injuries but was speaking to investigators, Onondaga County sheriff's deputy Herb Wiggins told The Post-Standard newspaper of Syracuse.

The dead included three men and a woman in her teens or early 20s, Sheriff Kevin Walsh told the newspaper. He said there was no indication the driver had been drinking or using drugs.

The bus left Philadelphia at 10 p.m. Friday and was headed for Toronto with stops in Syracuse and Buffalo, said Don Carmichael, a senior vice president at Coach USA, which operates Megabus. He said he didn't know why the bus was off its route but was headed to the crash site early Saturday to investigate.

The crash shut down the parkway, which runs along a lake not far from the intersection of the two major highways that go through Syracuse, Interstate 81 and Interstate 90.

Idd Mbaraka!

Nawatakia wadau wote waIslamu Idd Mbaraka! Mbarikiwe wote!

Dr. Slaa Afunguliwa Mashitaka Mahakama Kuu!

(Pichani Dr. Wilbrod Slaa - CHADEMA)

Tunaelekea wapi?

Mwisho nauliza kwa nini wanamsakama Dk. Slaa sasa? Naona kampeni yake imepamba moto kweli halafu ndo jamaa anataka alipe eti mabilioni!

MFUMO WETU WA ELIMU NA CHANGAMOTO ZAKE!

Ubungo mwaka 1980.

Si maajabu hayo" Maajabu ndo yeye eti alijua kiingerza kuliko wengine.

Chama chake ilikuwa UMD. Alisema, "Mwalimu Nyerere alikuwa anaongea Kiingera kizuri sana...The Queen's English, halafui alitaka nyie msiongee!"

***********************************************************************

Imeandikwa na Malkiory William Matiya

Waswahili walisema, mkunje samaki angali mbichi.

Mbuzi Wakwama kwenye Daraja Montana

Making goats of themselves: Cory Freeman of the Rimrock Humane Society looks over at two stranded goats as they perch on a rail bridge in Montana

Wadau, hao mbuzi walikwama kwenye daraja hapo Montana kwa siku mbili. Ilibidi waokolewe na 'crane' kutoka kwenye mgodi karibu na hapo. Ningependa kujua walifikaje hapo?

Silly billies: Two young goats get stuck on six-inch ledge of railway bridge for two days
By Daily Mail Reporter
3rd September 2010
Here is the perfect example of how a moonlight stroll can go horribly wrong.
Two young goats that wandered onto the thin ledge of a 60ft railway bridge had to be rescued by a crane after two days high above a remote highway.

The poor animals' plight was only discovered when a passing motorist contacted a local charity and alerted them to the situation.

Rimrock Humane Society called the police, who then enlisted the help of a local coal mine to bring in a crane and pluck the animals to safety near Roundup, southern Montana.

The young female animals, weighing about 30lb each, mostly stayed on the angled ledge - even though there was a wider surface area on a pillar just a few feet away.

Rimrock Humane Society president Sandy Church said: 'The whole time, we thought they were going to fall off. These guys are just babies.'

Ms Church said it wasn't clear how the nimble-footed animals got into the predicament, but she speculated they wandered onto the ledge at night and then froze after the sun rose and they discovered where they were.

She said that the goats sometimes stepped to the pillar but returned to the narrower ledge, where they tried to rest their tired legs by tucking them under their bodies for a few seconds at a time.

Long way down: The two goats remained on the thin ledge for two days - until authorities could pluck them to safety after enlisting the help of a nearby mine, which brought a crane to the rescue

Authorities were called on Tuesday, when the goats were first spotted. But confusion about the location delayed the rescue until another caller alerted the humane society yesterday.

The sheriff's office, Ms Church and Cory Freeman, a humane society volunteer who runs the Animal Edventures Sanctuary, enlisted the help of officials at Signal Peak Energy, which operates a nearby coal mine.

Mine boss John DeMichiei volunteered a mining crane with an arm high enough to reach the stranded goats that eventually moved to the pillar.

Both animals were thirsty and tired but have recovered well after their ordeal - and are undoubtedly giving late-night walks a miss for the time being.

Zeruzeru aliyekatwa Mikono Bongo apata Mikono Mipya

Amepata mikono bandia. Alikatwa mikono akiwa amelala kijijini kwake. Habari zinasema kuwa Mariamu hivi sasa amekwisha rudi Tanzania.

Tanzanian Woman With Albinism Gets New Arms

Specialist Builds Prosthetic Limbs for Mariamu Staford Who Has Albinism; Was Target of Brutal Attack

By JOSEPH DIAZ

FAIRFAX, Va., Aug. 27, 2010

Ona cold winter evening, a soft-spoken, 28-year-old single mother from rural Tanzania stepped off a plane at Dulles International Airport outside Washington D.C., with high hopes. The goal of her trip: a shot at life.

It was 28-year-old Mariamu Staford's first time outside of Tanzania; but as she approached customs, an agent wouldn't let her through, claiming she refused to be fingerprinted. It wasn't that she wouldn't, but that she couldn't.

A year ago, both of Staford's arms were chopped off -- part of a brutal campaign of death in her native country. Men armed with machetes stormed Staford's hut while she was sleeping, she told ABC News, and began cutting at her arms in a gruesome attempt to amputate them.

Persons with albinism, like Staford, are being hunted down and murdered; their bodies sold on the black market and used in witchdoctor potions, all because of a superstitious belief that the limbs of albinos possess special powers. Nearly 60 albinos have been murdered in the last three years.

The attack rendered Staford an invalid. Unable to feed or clothe herself, or care for her young son, she yearned for independence.

"I'm a grown person, but I can't do anything," she told "20/20." "I used to be able to rely on myself, but now my mother must tend to my every need."

Staford thought her future was bleak. After meeting her last year, "20/20" helped mobilize a group of volunteers, who affectionately became known as "Team Mariamu," to bring Staford to the U.S. Leading the team was Vicky Ntetema, a Tanzanian journalist-turned-advocate, who bravely first exposed Staford's tragedy.

Eventually, a customs manager, who saw "20/20's" initial report about the grotesque phenomenon of albino killings, allowed Staford into the country.

Staford's first stop was an appointment with Elliot Weintrob, the president of the Orthotic Prosthetic Center in Virginia, who would build a custom set of prosthetic limbs for Staford -- free of charge.

"You can't turn the other way when you see something like [Staford's gruesome attack]. You got to say, 'What can I do here to help?'" Weintrob said. "I don't think I had a choice. I see and hear a lot of things, but this went right to the top."

AIDS Quest to Kill `Sleeping' Virus Enlists Merck Cancer Drug

By Simeon Bennett - Sep 2, 2010

The 30-year-long search for a cure for AIDS, the world’s deadliest viral infection, may get a renewed boost from an unlikely source: a little-used Merck & Co. cancer drug.

Researchers at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill plan to test Merck’s drug, Zolinza, next year in about 20 people infected with HIV, the AIDS virus. The goal is to determine if Zolinza, or a medicine like it, can force HIV out of cells where it can reside, concealed from attack by potent antiviral treatments, said David Margolis, a professor of medicine who’s leading the research.

While AIDS drug cocktails can eliminate more than 99 percent of virus from an infected person, the treatment isn’t a cure because a remnant of the virus remains hidden in certain cells. For years, scientists have sought a simple way to drive the remaining virus into the bloodstream where the drugs can clear them from the body. Zolinza, approved in 2006 for use against a rare type of blood cancer, may work by blocking an enzyme that helps the virus avoid detection.

“It’s really all about trying to move the field ahead,” Margolis said in a telephone interview. “We don’t expect to cure anybody, but we expect to really show whether it can work the way we think it does in people -- or not.”

Zolinza earned Whitehouse Station, New Jersey-based Merck $15 million in 2008, the last year it disclosed sales of the drug, for treating a malignancy of white blood cells that affects the skin. In a laboratory test published last year, Margolis used the medicine to coax HIV out of hiding in cells taken from infected patients. Now he wants to replicate the result inside the body. Success would show he’s on the right track to finding a cure.

Mysterious Illness

“There is a good chance that it will cause some activation of latently infected cells,” said Robert Siliciano, a professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore who first identified the cells in which HIV hides out, and isn’t involved in the Zolinza trial. “Nobody knows if it will work, but it’s important to try.”

AIDS was first observed as a mysterious illness among gay men in the U.S. in 1981, the same year Margolis started medical school at Harvard University in Boston. Since then it’s killed more than 25 million people, mostly in Africa.
