Dada Yasmine Bandali anaaelezea jinsi alivyofanikiwa kutengeneza sinema yake:
After shopping around an award winning script for several years, I decided that the only way to get a movie made (if you had no connections) was to Do-It-Yourself. So in April of 2009 I produced and directed a feature movie in Kenya called TA KIMBIA (I will run).
This film is about a young boy who dreams of running but must contend with family pressure and poverty. The movie was shot over 12 days on a shoestring budget (seriously indie!) Amongst the challenges were: numerous film permits and location fees draining the budget, the intense heat, cultural issues and missing equipment.
But on the good side: the movie DID get made. I got New Balance to donate me shoes and apparel, I got a 2 time gold Olympic medalist Kip Keino to act as the coach in the movie, and I got a real aircraft from Kenya Airways, in the film. And now it is screening at the DC independent film festival.
And also the film website: http://www.takimbia.com/
See you at the screening!
Twelve days to shoot a movie? How long is it 5 minutes? Please!

ReplyDeleteDefinitely this was a challenge. I had to do this within 12 days since I only had certain locations within a short time frame - and also I had to mindful of the time tables of the actors.
It would be very expensive to maintain a movie of a longer shooting time on the small budget I had.
However, the good news is that it resulted in a feature length film of 1 hr 21 mins.
I worked on the premise that if I could get 10 mins each day then I could get 120 mins. Then of course one films for 6 hours each days and allows the editor to chop and change.
But it is certainly far long than 5 minutes!
Also note that other low budget feature films have also been filmed on a tight time frame - see the movie "Once" - shoestring budget and filmed in 17 days. This is a feature movie.
12 days of shooting might produce 5 minutes for a large company with many effects and a lot of infrastruture. But on a bare bones budget, 12 days can nonetheless create a full length film. Low budget and definitely with no frills or fancies - but a full length film nonetheless.
