ATLANTA (AP) - Tyler Perry recently met with a group of Tanzanian children with albinism who are living in a home the filmmaker helped fund.

Perry's representative said Monday he donated $200,000 three years ago to help build a four-bedroom house in New Jersey for a group of children who had been mutilated for their body parts. The children attended Perry's "Madea on the Run" play Thursday night at Manhattan's Beacon Theatre, where they met him backstage.

The children will stay there while they receive medical treatment in the United States.

Perry donated after watching a special featuring Elissa Montanti, a Staten Island woman who runs the nonprofit Global Medical Relief Fund for children affected by war and natural disasters.

Montanti recently brought the children with albinism to the U.S. from Tanzania.

Protect People with Albinism

South African Navanethem Pillay, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, speaks during a press conference at the European headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, Thursday, June 30, 2011. Pillay told reporters she was "disappointed" that China welcomed Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir during a visit this week, rather than arrest him to ensure he stands trial. She said that "the whole world favors trial" for al-Bashir for his role in the civil war in Sudan that killed more than 2 million people. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay called Thursday for increased protection for people with albinism, after the barbaric murder of a 40-year-old woman with albinism in north-western Tanzania on 12 May.

“This killing and the terrible circumstances surrounding it sadly demonstrate that the human rights situation of people with albinism in Tanzania and other countries, remains dire,” Pillay said.

According to police reports, Munghu Lugata was brutally murdered Monday night at her home in Mwachalala, a village in Simiyu region, north-western Tanzania. Her attackers chopped off her left leg above the knee, two of her fingers and the upper part of her left thumb, apparently while she was still alive.

These attacks, which are often motivated by the use of body parts for ritual purposes, have claimed the lives of at least 73 people with albinism in Tanzania since 2000. Ms Lugata’s murder is the first reported killing of someone with albinism in Tanzania in 2014.

Pillay welcomed the rapid response of the police, who arrested two local witchdoctors on 13 May.

“The fight against impunity is a key component for prevention and deterrence of the crimes targeting this exceptionally vulnerable community,” Pillay said, while noting that victims often face significant difficulties in bringing their cases to justice, fearing retaliatory attacks or further stigmatization. Without effective and affordable access to justice, many cannot claim their rights.

The High Commissioner stressed that States’ obligation to investigate and prosecute perpetrators of such crimes is particularly critical due to the vulnerability of people with albinism. States must also ensure access to effective remedies, redress and rehabilitation, including medical and psychological care for survivors and victims’ families.

“All over the world, people with albinism continue to face attacks or suffer terrible discrimination, stigma and social exclusion,” said the High Commissioner. The UN Human Rights Office has received reports of more than 200 cases of attacks against people with albinism in 15 countries between 2000 and 2013, but it is believed the actual number could be much higher.

The High Commissioner also expressed concern about the appalling living conditions in at least of Tanzania’s 13 centres for displaced children and adults with special needs. These centres host hundreds of children with albinism who have been abandoned by their families or have fled their homes out of fear of being attacked or killed. Some are administrated by the Government while others are run by faith-based organizations.

The 13 shelters are overcrowded, with very poor health and hygiene conditions. Many of the children with albinism living there reportedly suffer from skin cancer, partly due to the lack of awareness of the staff about a number of simple steps that can be taken to prevent this disease. Cases of sexual abuse have also been reported in some of these centres. Due to the very limited human and financial resources, teaching and learning materials are reported to be almost non-existent in most of them.

“I urge the Tanzanian authorities to take urgent measures to assess and address the situation in these centres, including allegations of sexual harassment and abuse, and the poor living conditions. The staff working with people with albinism should be trained on their special needs, in particular with regard to basic preventive measures to avoid skin cancer,” Pillay said.

The High Commissioner also called upon the Tanzanian authorities to take urgent concrete measures to protect people with albinism, and to actively engage in the fight against stigma attached to albinism through education and awareness-raising campaigns.

Unyama Wanofanyikwa Zeruzeru Tanzania Katika Taarifa Ya Habari USA

By JACQUELYN MARTIN
Associated Press

KABANGA, Tanzania (AP) - As an infant in rural Tanzania, Angel Salvatory was unusual. Snow white skin, blond hair, and blue eyes set her apart from others in her village. Those unique looks have also made her a target.

"Her father thought she was a gift from God," says Salvatory's mother, Bestida Simon. "One that he could use to get riches."

Since surviving an attack led by her father, Salvatory has spent the past four years living in the Kabanga Protectorate Center, a government safe house for people living with albinism.

"Angel's father led a group to attack her. He had wanted to attack her since she was 3 months old. He thought if they'd take Angel to a witch doctor as a sacrifice that they could get rich," Simon said.

Burning in the daylight and hunted in the shadows, having albinism is often a death sentence in East Africa. In Tanzania, one out of every 1,400 people has albinism, a genetic condition characterized by a lack of pigment in the body. That compares to a global average of one in 20,000 people according to Under the Same Sun, a Canada-based albinism advocacy group.

The group says that more than 100 people with albinism have been physically attacked in Tanzania since 2006, including 71 who died. Albinos are widely seen as a source of magic in Tanzania's traditional communities.

Long in danger and neglected in their own country, albinos in Tanzania now have a bit of hope for increased government assistance.

In April members of Parliament heard emotional testimony that moved some to suggest making sun screen tax free, and Parliament voted to donate part of their salary to the cause.

Severin Edward, a program officer with the Tanzania Albino Society, noted that parliament promised to set aside funds for the special needs of people with albinism and that the country's prime minister said the government has agreed to grant special priority to court cases involving albinos, to bring about justice faster.

"This is the good point to start," Edward said by email last month.

A government census done in 2012 could reveal the exact numbers of albinos in Tanzania. The portion of the census regarding people with disabilities, including albinos, is expected to be released in 2014.

In Tanzania, albinos are often referred to as ghosts, or zero zero, which in Swahili signifies someone who is less than human. Legends here suggest that that even when an albinos is killed, he or she never really dies.

Brutal attacks against albinos are often led by witch doctors who use albino body parts in potions they claim bring riches. In response, the government began placing children and adults with albinism into safe houses. Although they may be physically protected in the centers, many there feel imprisoned.

In 2008 the government of Tanzania suffered a rash of negative stories by Western journalists about the killings of albinos, said Peter Ash, founder of Under The Same Sun.

"These centers came in response to the killings. It's how the government has chosen to respond. The government has basically abandoned these kids," he said. "There is no long-term plan."

Holding her 2-month-old baby Jessica on her back in a traditional kanga cloth, Helen Sekalima, 40, sorts dry beans. The dark-skinned mother came to live at the Kabanga Protectorate Center after her newborn infant was threatened.

"The people in the village said that the children are not normal people, that they are like devils," Sekalima said.

Her husband, Anderson Naimoni, doesn't agree with the idea of centers where, "our people are being turned into refugees," he says.

Ash said his group discovered that in some centers emotional and even sexual abuse "was rampant." His group has informed the government "but they'll probably do nothing about it," Ash said.

Experts say staving off attacks from witch doctors is just one of many issues that Tanzania's albino population must address. Low vision problems complicate schooling, and with little cultural precedent for skin protection rates of skin cancer are high. More than 80 percent will die by age 40 due to skin cancer, Ash said.

In rural northwest Tanzania dried corn stalks sway gently in a field sheltering a concrete slab that protects the grave of 3-year-old Naimana Daudi from grave-robbers. The albino toddler was kidnapped at night and found in pieces in the morning.

A tear slips down the dark cheek of her mother, 30-year-old Angelista Ngarama. After her daughter was killed, Ngarama took her youngest child, Ferister, to the Kabanga Protectorate Center. No one knows when it will be safe enough for the 2-year-old to return home.

Zeruzeru aliyekatwa Mikono Bongo apata Mikono Mipya

Amepata mikono bandia. Alikatwa mikono akiwa amelala kijijini kwake. Habari zinasema kuwa Mariamu hivi sasa amekwisha rudi Tanzania.

Tanzanian Woman With Albinism Gets New Arms

Specialist Builds Prosthetic Limbs for Mariamu Staford Who Has Albinism; Was Target of Brutal Attack

By JOSEPH DIAZ

FAIRFAX, Va., Aug. 27, 2010

Ona cold winter evening, a soft-spoken, 28-year-old single mother from rural Tanzania stepped off a plane at Dulles International Airport outside Washington D.C., with high hopes. The goal of her trip: a shot at life.

It was 28-year-old Mariamu Staford's first time outside of Tanzania; but as she approached customs, an agent wouldn't let her through, claiming she refused to be fingerprinted. It wasn't that she wouldn't, but that she couldn't.

A year ago, both of Staford's arms were chopped off -- part of a brutal campaign of death in her native country. Men armed with machetes stormed Staford's hut while she was sleeping, she told ABC News, and began cutting at her arms in a gruesome attempt to amputate them.

Click here to find out how to help Tanzanians with albinism

Persons with albinism, like Staford, are being hunted down and murdered; their bodies sold on the black market and used in witchdoctor potions, all because of a superstitious belief that the limbs of albinos possess special powers. Nearly 60 albinos have been murdered in the last three years.

The attack rendered Staford an invalid. Unable to feed or clothe herself, or care for her young son, she yearned for independence.

"I'm a grown person, but I can't do anything," she told "20/20." "I used to be able to rely on myself, but now my mother must tend to my every need."

Staford thought her future was bleak. After meeting her last year, "20/20" helped mobilize a group of volunteers, who affectionately became known as "Team Mariamu," to bring Staford to the U.S. Leading the team was Vicky Ntetema, a Tanzanian journalist-turned-advocate, who bravely first exposed Staford's tragedy.

Eventually, a customs manager, who saw "20/20's" initial report about the grotesque phenomenon of albino killings, allowed Staford into the country.

Staford's first stop was an appointment with Elliot Weintrob, the president of the Orthotic Prosthetic Center in Virginia, who would build a custom set of prosthetic limbs for Staford -- free of charge.

"You can't turn the other way when you see something like [Staford's gruesome attack]. You got to say, 'What can I do here to help?'" Weintrob said. "I don't think I had a choice. I see and hear a lot of things, but this went right to the top."

Serikali Yafuta Leseni za Waganga wa Kienyeji

Wadau, nasema WAZIRI PINDA NI SHUJAA!!!!

*******************************************************************

"Mkimuona mtu akamkata mwingine shingo naye muueni kwani sasa viongozi wote tumechoka... no more, I can't tolerate anymore (imetosha, siwezi kuvumilia tena)," alisema Pinda huku akiwaacha watu midomo wazi.

Albino Mjamzito Akatwa Mikono Bongo!

Khaa! Utu wetu umeenda wapi?

Albino mjamzito avamiwa usiku

2008-11-19

Man 'tried to sell' albino wife

This albino grave was sealed to stop people digging up the body
Police in southern Tanzania say they have arrested a man accused of attempting to sell his albino wife.

The man was allegedly planning to sell his wife to two Congolese businessmen for around $3,000.

Albinos have been living in fear in Tanzania after a series of killings due to a belief their body parts can make magic potions more effective.

At least 27 people with albinism have been killed since March, including a seven-month old baby.
President Jakaya Kikwete ordered a police crackdown on those involved in the killings, and 170 witchdoctors have since been arrested.

But BBC investigations suggest that some police are being "bought off" in order to look away when such crimes are committed.

Angry parents

Rukwa regional police commander Isunto Damian Mantage said the fisherman was arrested following a tip-off from an informer, according to the Daily News newspaper.

His wife was not aware that he was planning to sell her off, police say.

Mr Mantage says the wife's angry parents have decided to take back their daughter.

The businessmen managed to escape arrest, and are suspected to have fled back to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The police have asked Interpol to help track them down, the newspaper reported.

The recent attacks on albinos have been linked to witchdoctors who are peddling the belief that potions made from an albino's legs, hair, hands, and blood can make a person rich.

Albinism affects one in 20,000 people worldwide, but in Tanzania the prevalence appears to be much higher.

The Albino Association of Tanzania says that although just 4,000 albinos are officially registered in the country, they believe the actual number could be as high as 173,000.

A census is now underway to verify the figures.
