KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - The Malaysian jetliner missing for more than a week had its communications deliberately disabled and its last signal came about 7 1/2 hours after takeoff, meaning it could have ended up as far as Kazakhstan or into the southern reaches of the Indian Ocean, Malaysia's leader said Saturday.
Prime Minister Najib Razak's statement confirmed days of mounting speculation that the disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 was not accidental, refocusing the investigation into the flight's crew and passengers and underlining the massive task for searchers who already have been scouring vast areas of ocean.
"Clearly the search for (Flight) MH370 has entered a new phase," Najib said at a televised news conference.
Najib stressed that investigators were looking into all possibilities as to why the plane deviated so drastically from its original flight path, saying authorities could not confirm whether or not it was a hijacking. Earlier Saturday, a Malaysian government official called the plane's disappearance a hijacking, though he said no motive had been established and no demands had been made known.
"In view of this latest development, the Malaysian authorities have refocused their investigation into the crew and passengers on board," Najib told reporters, reading from a written statement but not taking any questions.
Police on Saturday morning drove into the residential compound where the missing plane's pilot lives in Kuala Lumpur, according a guard and several local reporters who were barred from entering the complex. Authorities have said they will be investigating the pilots as part of their probe, but have released no information about how they are progressing.
Experts have previously said that whoever disabled the plane's communication systems and then flew the jet must have had a high degree of technical knowledge and flying experience. One possibility they have raised was that one of the pilots wanted to commit suicide.
The plane was carrying 239 people when it departed for an overnight flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing at 12:40 a.m. on March 8. The plane's communications with civilian air controllers were severed at about 1:20 a.m., and the jet went missing - heralding one of the most puzzling mysteries in modern aviation history.

Japan Inashindana na China Afrika!

YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) - Japan is wooing African nations, promising 3.2 trillion yen ($32 billion) as government and private-sector aid to foster growth in a region that is increasingly an appealing market and business partner.
The package for the next five years, including 1.4 trillion yen ($14 billion) in government aid called ODA, or official development assistance, was announced at a three-day conference in Yokohama, near Tokyo, opening Saturday.
Japan is eager to catch up with neighboring Asian rival China, which has a big head start in courting Africa, investing heavily in infrastructure projects.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who took office late last year, is bullish about investing in and exporting to Africa.
"What Africa needs now is private sector investment," he said in his opening speech, in between meetings with officials from African nations, including Zimbabwe, Ghana, Sudan and Kenya.
"If we recognize this as a new reality, then it will be necessary to revolutionize the way of providing assistance to Africa," he said.
Among other measures, Tokyo will invite 1,000 people from Africa to study and work as interns at Japanese companies, according to the Foreign Ministry.
Japan will also provide 650 billion yen ($6.5 billion) in assistance for infrastructure projects, including support for transportation in cities, it said. Aid for education, farming, energy projects and water sanitation is also being offered.
"Africa could be the next global growth pole," said Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn.
Japan's conference for Africa, held every five years, began in 1993, and the latest is the fifth such gathering. Japanese companies have set up booths, to showcase their efforts to win business in Africa, such as Nissin Foods, the maker of Cup Noodles.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon took part in the conference and urged the world to do more to ensure security in the region, noting the value of investing in Africa is now clear.
"But millions of Africans still lack jobs, health care and food. Too many suffer in conflict. To find solutions, we must address the links between peace, security and government," he said.

Private Chinese Investment to Extend Tanzania's Main Airport has led to the Eviction of 1,300 families and brought Few Gains
Kipawa, a district of Tanzania's commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, used to be a lively neighbourhood, home to about 1,300 families. Many residents had lived there for most of their lives. Now, the area has been completely demolished and fenced in. A sign on the fence says a Chinese company, China International Fund, is to construct a terminal building here as part of a project to extend the country's main airport.
It is almost two years since the community was evicted to make way for the development, and yet there are no signs of construction in Kipawa. The area has become a deserted field. Most former residents were relocated 36km to the west; they no longer have access to electricity, clean water, roads or schools, and they face long journeys.
More than 480 families protested against a proposed compensation package that, they said, undervalued their homes by 50% and was based on an obsolete land acquisition act dating from 1967. Nevertheless, in February 2010, the eviction was carried out suddenly. Teargas was used and more than 300 buildings were demolished within two days. Many people became homeless overnight, according to the Legal and Human Rights Centre, a Tanzania-based NGO.
Like many other Kipawa residents, Eric had to prioritise his spending when he used his compensation of 6m Tanzanian shillings ($3,800) to build a new house. His budget only allowed him to put a roof over one room, which now accommodates the family of eight.
Eric told us the family got by living without electricity. Doing without clean water is harder, but even that remains an unaffordable luxury. The only available water comes from a muddy ground well dug by the locals. Machines to drill and pump clean underground water cost at least 10m shillings.
One of the hardest things to bear is that the displacement may turn out to be pointless, since the Tanzanian government has admitted the investment for its airport projects is not yet in place.
Suleiman Suleiman, managing director of the Tanzanian Airports Authority (TAA), told us negotiations with the Chinese investors had broken off and the terminal project has been suspended until new investment comes in. The signs bearing the name of the Chinese investors on the fence has now been painted over.
According to local sources, it all looked a rather different story in March 2007, when Chinese businessman Sam Po flew his private jet into Tanzania. Po represents the 88 Queensway Group, a body of companies – including the China International Fund (CIF) and China Sonangol International Holding – registered at that address in Hong Kong. His visit was well received by high-ranking Tanzanian officials, not least because he offered to upgrade Julius Nyerere international airport and revive Air Tanzania, the troubled national flag-carrier.
Po's companies have done substantial business in Africa. Building a new terminal at Dar es Salaam airport will cost at least $300m, says Suleiman. Po has promised six other projects to upgrade the airport, according to a memorandum of understanding between China Sonangol and the TAA.
A few months after signing the memorandum, China Sonangol was granted licences to explore two oilfields in the Lake Rukwa basin in south-west Tanzania. Zitto Kabwe, chairman of one of the Tanzanian parliamentary accounts committees, says it is clear the two deals were linked.
The Guardian made repeated attempts to obtain comment from CIF and China Sonangol, but they failed to respond.
A decision by the Tanzanian parliament may explain the retreat of the Chinese investors and the silence on the planned construction in Kipawa. Kabwe set up an inquiry, which found that China Sonangol has been granted oil concessions outside normal procedure in 2009. A year later, the parliament forced the authorities to withdraw the oil licences granted to the Chinese company.
But Kabwe said he was concerned at "how Tanzanians will have to pay back the Chinese". The near-bankrupt Air Tanzania pulled itself back into doing business by using the $21m from China Sonangol. "The Chinese investors have left behind two airplanes, which we are using," says Paul Chizi, CEO of Air Tanzania. The VIP terminal at Dar es Salaam airport was also built free of charge by the Chinese company, at an estimated cost of $6m.
Meanwhile, the 1,300 families evicted from Kipawa are still struggling to rebuild their lives.

Ndege ya Zimbabwe Imeanguka China

11/28/09 By EUGENE HOSHIKO
Associated Press Writer

SHANGHAI (AP) - A cargo plane crashed as it took off from Shanghai's main airport Saturday, killing three American crew members and injuring four other employees after it veered off the runway and burst into flames.
Three Americans on the seven-member crew died and a fourth American was injured, U.S. Embassy spokesman Richard Buangan told The Associated Press. He did not know the injured person's condition.
Shanghai television showed what it called a 61-year-old American co-pilot in a hospital bed, conscious and saying "Thank you" to staff and officials.
The TV report said the other crew were from Indonesia, Belgium and Zimbabwe.
The aircraft's tail struck the ground on takeoff, China Central Television reported. Footage showed black smoke billowing from the wreckage.
The crash at Shanghai Pudong International Airport occurred just after 8 a.m. (0000 GMT), the official Xinhua News Agency said. The plane was headed to Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan.
Xinhua said the three people died at the People's Hospital of Pudong New Area. A propaganda official there had no comment Saturday night.
The aircraft was operated by Zimbabwe-based Avient Aviation. An Avient Harare official said the flight was operated out the United Kingdom and could not say what cargo was on board. The official was not authorized to speak to the media and spoke on condition of anonymity.
State media said the plane was an MD-11. In March, another MD-11 cargo plane crashed and exploded while landing at Japan's largest international airport, killing its two American pilots. Xinhua said another MD-11 with Korean Air crashed shortly after takeoff 10 years ago at Shanghai's Hongqiao Airport.
More than 30 international flights from the Shanghai airport were delayed Saturday morning, leaving about 4,000 travelers stranded on planes or in airport lounges, Xinhua said. CCTV said two runways at the airport were shut down.
Shanghai is China's largest city and its economic capital. The Pudong airport is located on the eastern edge of the city, by the East China Sea.
Recent crashes in China include two Chinese air force jets colliding in June 2008 in Inner Mongolia, with both pilots parachuting to safety. In June 2006, a Chinese military plane crashed in eastern Anhui province, killing all 40 people aboard.

What is pneumonic plague? Disease outbreak in China is similar to bubonic plague, highly contagious
BY Rosemary Black DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

The rare but deadly form of plague that has reportedly killed two victims in northwest China and caused authorities to seal off a town of 10,000 is treatable with antibiotics - but only if it's caught very early.
Pneumonic plague, which afflicts the lungs, is caused by the same bacteria responsible for bubonic plague, a less serious form of illness that is transmitted by certain fleas.

Someni habari zenyewe hapo chini:

Toy company CEO kills self
BEIJING, China (AP) -- The head of a Chinese toy manufacturing company at the center of a huge U.S. recall has committed suicide, a state-run newspaper said Monday.
Two toys of the same kind recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Zhang Shuhong, who ran the Lee Der Industrial, killed himself at a warehouse over the weekend, days after China announced it had temporarily banned exports by the company, the Southern Metropolis Daily said.
Lee Der made 967,000 toys recalled earlier this month by Mattel because they were made with paint found to have excessive amounts of lead. The plastic preschool toys, sold under the Fisher-Price brand in the U.S., included the popular Big Bird, Elmo, Dora and Diego characters.
The newspaper said that a supplier, Zhang's best friend, sold Lee Der fake paint that was used in the toys.
"The boss and the company were harmed by the paint supplier, the closest friend of our boss," a manager surnamed Liu was quoted as saying.
Liu said Zhang hung himself on Saturday, according to the report. It is common for disgraced officials to commit suicide in China.
A company official who answered the telephone at the Lee Der factory in the southern city of Foshan on Monday said he had not heard of the news. A man at Lee Der's main office in Hong Kong said the company was not accepting interviews and hung up.
The recall by El Segundo, California-based Mattel came just two months after RC2 Corp., a New York company, recalled 1.5 million Chinese-made wooden railroad toys and set parts from its Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway product line because of lead paint.
The maker, Hansheng Wood Products Factory, also was included in the export ban announced Thursday by the General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, one of China's quality watchdogs.
The administration also ordered both companies to evaluate and change their business practices.
Lead poisoning can cause vomiting, anemia and learning difficulties. In extreme cases, it can cause severe neurological damage and death.
The quality watchdog also said police were investigating two companies' use of "fake plastic pigment" but did not give any details. Such pigments are a type of industrial latex usually used to increase surface gloss and smoothness.
Chinese companies often have long supply chains, making it difficult to trace the exact origin of components, chemicals and food additives.
The toy recalls were among the largest in recent months involving Chinese products, which have come under fire for containing potentially dangerous high levels of chemicals and toxins.
