Agnes Trip Killing Brings Awareness to Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse in Kenya

                       AGNES TIROP 1995-2021

By MUTWIRI MUTUOTA and GERALD IMRAY

Associated Press ELDORET, Kenya (AP) -  The brutal killing of Olympic runner Agnes Tirop last year shows signs of being a turning point for Kenya in finally confronting a scourge of abuse and violence against female athletes. It hasn't been spoken about or even acknowledged until now. The 25-year-old Tirop was stabbed to death at her home last October. Her partner has been charged with murder in her killing. Her death provoked a deep reckoning in Kenya and prompted current and former athletes to finally speak out and put pressure on authorities. They say young female athletes have been abused by partners, coaches and others for years and their stories have gone untold or been ignored.

Associated Press NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) -  Thousands of people have surged for food aid in Kenya's capital in a brief stampede, leading police to fire tear gas and injure several people. Many were desperate for help as coronavirus-related restrictions make it more difficult to go out and make a living. The scene in Kenya's largest slum reflects the fears of millions across Africa as nearly 20 countries have imposed full lockdowns and others have shut down cities or imposed curfews. In the Nairobi chaos, men with sticks beat people back as they fought over food, some with face masks dangling off their chins. Some people fell and were trampled. Women shrieked.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Thousands of people surged for food aid in a brief stampede Friday in Kenya's capital, desperate for help as coronavirus restrictions keep them from making a living. Police fired tear gas and injured several people, witnesses said.
Residents of Nairobi's Kibera slum, spotting a food distribution, tried to force their way through a gate outside a district office for their chance at supplies to keep their families fed for another day.
The scene in Kenya’s largest slum reflected the fears of millions across Africa as nearly 20 countries have imposed full lockdowns and others have shut down cities or imposed curfews. A vast population of informal workers, with little or no savings, worries about the next meal as no one knows when the measures will end. Already, Rwanda and South Africa have extended their lockdowns by two weeks.
In the Nairobi chaos, men with sticks beat people back as they fought over packages of food, some with face masks dangling off their chins. Some people fell and were trampled. Dust rose. Women shrieked. Injured people were carried to safety and placed on the ground to recover, gasping for breath.
“The people who have been injured here are very many, even we cannot count,” said one resident, Evelyn Kemunto. “Both women and children have been injured. There was a woman with twins, she has been injured, and even now she is looking for her twins. … It is food we were coming for since we are dying of hunger.”
The crowd had heard that popular opposition leader Raila Odinga had donated the food, said witness Richard Agutu Kongo, a 43-year-old who operates a motorcycle taxi. But in fact the distribution was from another well-wisher who had given selected families cards to turn in and receive aid, he said.
“They didn’t care about government restrictions that we were to stay 1 meter apart,” he added.
Kongo’s family, including six children, was given a card. They received two packets of maize meal, cooking oil and cereals.
People in the crowd “could see those with cards getting food and this caused the stampede as they tried to force their way in,” Kongo said.
He described his business as a standstill as Kenyans are discouraged from going out.
“Before, I used to make (the equivalent of) $10 and now with the coronavirus restrictions I can barely make $5,” he said. “It’s becoming hard to ensure my family gets three meals a day. Yesterday they missed breakfast.”
With Friday’s donation, his family now has enough for three meals, he said: “We are thankful for the donation, but it will only last two days.”
He lamented that Kenya’s government appears to have no plan to feed him and millions more.

UN report links Kenyan military to attacks on Somalia's largest Telecommunications provider

By TOM ODULA
Associated Press

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - A new United Nations report says it has corroborated evidence of five attacks allegedly carried out by Kenya's military on communication masts belonging to neighboring Somalia's largest telecom provider. One attack killed two civilians in 2018.

The report by the U.N. panel of experts monitoring sanctions against Somalia says destroying telecommunication masts may prevent al-Shabab extremists from triggering explosives using mobile telephone signals.

The report, made public this week, says Kenya's military denied involvement in the attacks. The military did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.

Hormuud Telecom Somalia says the attacks violate international law. The company asserts that its communications masts have been attacked 10 times by Kenya's military over the past two years.

The attacks have caused at least $5 million in infrastructure while destabilizing communities, undermining Somalia's economic development and impeding the coordination of humanitarian efforts, a company spokesman said.

Many people in the Horn of Africa nation long wracked by extremist attacks and climate shocks such as drought rely on remittances wired from family members in the Somali diaspora.

The destruction of telecom infrastructure may be aimed at curtailing the transmission of intelligence on troop movements or extremist operations, Hormuud said.

Kenya sent troops to Somalia in 2011 to fight al-Shabab, which also carries out attacks inside Kenya. As assault on a luxury hotel complex in the capital, Nairobi, in January killed 21 people.

The new U.N. report also said the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab remain "a potent threat" to regional peace and are now manufacturing home-made explosives, expanding their revenue sources and infiltrating government institutions.

According to local police, Ms Misumi poured gasoline and lighter fluid on the bank’s lobby and demanded cash from the tellers while waving a hammer.
Murphy Police said alert tellers and office personnel called 911 and when the officers arrived on the scene, the 36-year-old suspect was heading out of the building towards her car.
“Police elected not to draw weapons as no immediate danger to themselves or surrounding individuals was apparent,” the department said in a news release.

Mahakama ya Kenya yaamuru Mwiko kupima Njia ya Haja Kubwa ya Wanasosikiwa kufanya Ulawiti

 Image result for anal probe

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - A Kenyan appeals court on Thursday ruled unlawful the use of forced anal exams to test whether two men had gay sex, which is criminalized in the East African nation.

The earlier high court decision was unconstitutional and violated human rights, appellate court Judge Alnashir Visram said during the hearing in the coastal city of Mombasa.

Gay rights advocates cheered the decision, saying forced anal exams amount to torture. The Kenya Medical Association last year condemned their use.

"The ruling is a tremendous step not only in upholding the dignity of homosexuals who'd been subjected to the indignities of anal examinations but also to the rule of law in Kenya," said Eric Gitari, the executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission.

The commission represented the two men who were arrested in 2015 on suspicion of being gay and subjected to forced anal exams and HIV tests.

Human Rights Watch has said Kenya is one of at least eight countries that have used forced anal exams on suspected homosexuals since 2010, along with Cameroon, Egypt, Lebanon, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uganda and Zambia.

The new ruling undoubtedly will have an impact on those countries, Gitari said.

In Kenya, gay sex faces a penalty of up to 14 years in prison.

The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities in the East African nation have complained of harassment, which in some cases is violent. Gay people often are ostracized by families and communities and discriminated against when it comes to renting property and finding jobs.

Kenya's High Court last month began hearing arguments in a case that challenges parts of the penal code seen as targeting the LGBT community. The National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission argues that the sections are in breach of the constitution and deny basic rights by criminalizing consensual same-sex relations between adults.

Helicopter Crash in Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - A Kenyan official says a helicopter has plunged into Lake Nakuru in the Rift Valley moments after taking off from a nearby hotel.

National Disaster Management Unit Deputy Director Pius Mwachi said Saturday it's not clear yet how many people were on board the helicopter and who they were.

Mwachi says a search-and-rescue mission is underway. Lake Nakuru, located 170 kilometers (105 miles) northwest of the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, is famous for flamingo colonies that turn the shoreline pink at their peak.

Environment degradation has threatened the lake and the wildlife that depend on it.

Msss Shooting at Kenya Boarding School

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Gunmen suspected to be from neighboring South Sudan shot dead seven people, including six students, in a raid on a high school early Saturday that appeared to be a revenge attack, a Kenya police official said.

The shooting occurred at dawn at Lokichogio Mixed Secondary School near the countries' border, Rift Valley regional criminal investigations chief Gideon Kibunja said.

A key suspect is a senior at the school who was suspended last week after he was found fighting and vowed to take revenge, Kibunja said.

The gunmen were looking for the school's principal and the student involved in the fight but couldn't find them, so they shot other students out of frustration, he said.

The shooting comes a month after a high school girl was charged with murdering nine of her colleagues in a fire at a Nairobi boarding school.

Kenya's border areas are littered with firearms from neighboring countries that have experienced war, including South Sudan and Somalia. High schools have experienced a wave of violent incidents in the past two years.

Kenyan Doctor Discovers Hepatitis C Treatment

AJABU LIVE VIDEO INTERVIEW: How Kenya’s Dr. Njoroge Discovered HEP C Treatment Drug

(AJABU AFRICA NEWS, APRIL 27, 2017) BOSTON--By leading a team that discovered Victrelis, the first ever effective Hepatitis C treatment drug , in addition to being the first African ever to be granted over 100 patents in the USA, Kenyan born Dr. George Njoroge has continued to be a trail blazer in the bio chemistry arena.
He has therefore become a great role model for many Kenyans and Africans everywhere who now see living proof that they have what it takes to be competitive on the global arena and rise to the top.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)Hepatitis C kills more Americans every year more than any other infection diseases, with about 19,659 deaths reported in 2014 alone, mainly attributed to low levels of diagnosis and treatment as most patients do not even know they are suffering.

In addition, about 3.5 million Americans are currently living with the disease, with nearly half of them unaware since hepatitis C has no obvious symptoms.

The numbers of deaths and those living with the disease are much higher if the entire world population is taken into account. READ MORE & WATCH VIDEO HERE >>>

Kenyan Owned Home Health Company, Executives Indicted for Health Care Fraud in Boston

FROM AJABU AFRICA NEWS
AJABU AFRICA
A Worcester-based home health agency and three people involved with the company have been indicted by a grand jury for allegedly defrauding the state's Medicaid program of more than $800,000.
Compassionate Homecare Inc. provided nursing and other services for low-income patients on the government program known here as MassHealth. The agency is accused of conducting "numerous fraudulent schemes" and billing the state for providing services to patients who didn't need them, and for services that were never authorized by a doctor, in violation of rules.
"Our MassHealth program exists to assist people who are truly in need of health-related services, but this home health agency instead exploited this program to bilk hundreds of thousands of dollars from the state," Attorney General Maura Healey said in a statement.
Healey's office is bringing criminal charges in Worcester Superior Court against Compassionate and three executives: owner Francis Kimaru of Grafton; chief operating officer Wilberto Rodriguez of Norwich, Conn., and administrator Deborah Giordano of West Greenwich, R.I. They all were charged with larceny and making false Medicaid claims.FULL STORY HERE >>>>>

Kanisa za WaKenya Boston Zimeguezwa Miradi ya Kutafuta Pesa

Pastor Elizabeth Wanyoike of the newly launched International Restoration Reformed Church (IRRC) in Tewksbury, near Lowell during dedication ceremoney on Sunday November 15, 2015. AJABU MEDIA PIC/H.MAINA

Kenyan Churches in Boston turned into financially motivated Social Clubs, says new Pastor

LOWELL, Mass.,( Ajabu African News) Nov 19__Most Kenyan community churches in Boston have abdicated their primary role of spreading the true gospel of Jesus Christ and instead have been turned around into "help those who help you" social clubs emphasizing too much on financially motivated manipulations.
The charge was made by pastor Elizabeth Wanyoike last Sunday during the dedication ceremony of the newly launched International Restoration Reformed Church (IRRC) in Tewksbury, near Lowell.

She said that many Kenyans attending Kenyan community churches today have no clue of where they are headed yet they are being lead down the drain by church leaders many of whom are only concerned with parishioner contributions to cater for their weekly paychecks and social problems among members.

"There is a lot of ungodliness in the church today. The church has been turned around to help those who help you. It is the spirit of Jezebel and somebody must wake up to breaks the yokes of this spirit," she said during the sermon top about a dozen Kenyans present"

It is time to destroy the ungodliness in our church just like Elijah destroyed the idols that citizens were worshipping during King Ahab's rule," she added while quoting from the book of1st Kings Chapter 16 &17.

.Wanyoike said that there is a spirit of fear, oppression and intimidation going around the body of Christ today in the Kenyan community similar to what took place during King Ahab's reign.

"You can be in the church but the people in authority are taking you nowhere. People are covered in the spirit of oppression and intimidation."
She called on Kenyans of faith to take a proactive effort to change things so that the church "can operate on what God wants us to do."

"Things have to change and the church return to order. We don't have to gather for the sake of gathering. Even Obadiah was so afraid to tell the King that Prophet Elijah had arrived with a message to the people but Elijah forced him to bring up King Ahab to listen to the message and destroy the alters of worshiping idols instead of the read God," she added.

Kenyan Child Burn Victim Looking for Host Family in Boston

URGENT: Kenyan burn victim child looking for a temporary host family in Boston

BOSTON, Mass--Stella Akoth is a bright 16 year old girl who lives in Chimelli, a small rural town in Kenya. She suffered severe burns when she was two years old from a kerosene lamp explosion and as a result, she is disabled and is excluded from many activities that her peers enjoy.
However, an amazing story is unfolding..... After her concerned teacher contacted a local non-profit organization, a network of people came forward and now, she has an opportunity of a life time. She will be flown into Boston to receive surgery at the Shriners Hospital by a world-renown surgeon for child burn victims. Her medical expenses, living expenses, and air fare will all be provided by donors and charitable organizations.
A host family in Boston that would take Stella and her guardian in between Stella’s surgeries is the only missing piece at this point. We have 3 prospective host families but would like to have a few more on our list in case things fall through for one reason or another. (A stipend would be provided by the Children’s Burn Foundation to cover expenses.) Would you be able to host?
Stella and her guardian are due to arrive in early June. First, Stella will be seen by the surgeon to determine a plan. She will likely undergo a series of surgeries. Please provide two beds and use of a bathroom and kitchen for a maximum of a couple of months. If you could provide meals, that would be helpful.

Mbunge na Walinzi wake Wauawa Kenya!

The Late MP for Kabete, George Muchai

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Kenyan police say a lawmaker has been shot and killed on a street in the capital, Nairobi, by masked gunmen.

Nairobi Central Police Chief Paul Wanjama said the lawmaker, George Muchai, was killed alongside his two bodyguards and a driver after they stopped to buy a newspaper from a vendor early Saturday. He said the gunmen then sped away in their car.

The killings are likely to stoke insecurity fears in Kenya, which has also been dealing with occasional terrorist attacks mounted by Islamic militants seeking revenge over Kenyan military involvement in Somalia.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga said in a statement that Kenya "is bleeding and an atmosphere of fear and hopelessness is spreading" across the country.

Alan Wadi Okengo aka Lieutenant Wadi

KUTOKA DAILY NATION:

By RICHARD MUNGUTI

A fourth-year university student will spend two years in jail for posting on social media unprintable insults against President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Alan Wadi Okengo, alias Lieutenant Wadi, was accused of posting the messages on his Facebook account on December 18 and 19 at an unknown place within Kenya.
Wadi, 25, a political science student at Moi University, was arrested as he attempted to sneak out of the country through the Busia border on December 31.
He was brought back to Nairobi CID headquarters where he was interrogated by cybercrime police sleuths.
Wadi, who looked composed, told Milimani Law Courts resident magistrate Ms Ann Kaguru that he was ready to “apologise to President Kenyatta personally if he was not handed down a custodial sentence.”
The charge against the university student stated that “the message he sent was calculated to to bring into contempt the lawful authority of the President of the Republic of Kenya.”
PLEA NOT FACTORED
His plea was not factored when he was he was being sentenced after pleading guilty to two charges of hate speech and demeaning authority of a public officer, contrary to Section 132 of the Penal Code.
In her ruling, Ms Kaguru said , “the offence is serious and a deterrent penalty is called for to serve as a warning to others abusing the social media forums.”
She proceeded to pronounce the sentence after saying that “he was convicted on his own plea of guilty.”
A state counsel, Mathew Karori, told the magistrate that the accused was arrested while he was about to cross the border through “panya routes” (unofficial exit) to a neighbouring country.”
Mr Karori urged the court to treat the remorseful student as a first offender although he said the abuse of the social media forum should be discouraged.
Wadi was accused of posting the two offensive messages when National Assembly passed the Security Laws (Amendment) Act No 19 of 2014 on December 18 and the following day when President Kenyatta signed the Bill to become law last year.
The first indictment was that he posted a hate speech message intended to stir up ethnic hatred between various Kenyan communities on the other by alleging a particular tribe should be deported to their home county.

Police: Al-Shabab militants kill 28 in Kenya bus

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Police officials say al-Shabab militants from Somalia have hijacked a bus in northern Kenya and killed 28 non-Muslims on board.

The two police officers said Saturday that the bus traveling to the capital Nairobi was hijacked 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Mandera town. The officers say the gunmen singled out non-Muslims and shot them dead.

The officers insisted on anonymity out of fear of reprisals because of an order from Kenya's police chief that officers not speak to the media.

Kenya has been hit by a series of gun and bomb attacks blamed on Somalia's al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab militants since it sent troops into Somalia in October 2011. Authorities say there have been at least 135 attacks since then, including the Westgate Mall attack in which 67 people were killed.
