Former South African President, Nelson Mandela
Kutoka CNN.Com

Johannesburg (CNN) -- Former South African leader Nelson Mandela is in "serious but stable condition" at a Pretoria hospital with a recurring lung infection, the presidential spokesman said Saturday.
Mandela was hospitalized early Saturday after the state of his health deteriorated in the last few days, according to spokesman Mac Maharaj.

"He's receiving the best possible care," he said. "Everything is being done to ensure that he is comfortable and that he is getting better."

Maharaj said that the anti-apartheid icon is breathing on his own.

Mandela's wife, Graca Machel, is at the hospital with him, sources told CNN. She canceled her plans to attend the Hunger Summit meeting in London on Saturday.

South Africa's first black president gets round-the-clock care, and his house is retrofitted with medical equipment that mirrors that of an intensive care unit.

Mandela, 94, has become increasingly frail over the years and has not appeared in public since South Africa hosted the World Cup in 2010.
Despite his rare public appearances, news of his ailment spark concerns worldwide.

Viongozi WaAfrika Washinda Njaa Afrika Kusini!

Duh!

Ilikuwa kasheshe kweli kweli!

Hungry African leaders 'had to buy own food' at ANC centenary celebrations

African leaders reportedly sent staff to Nando’s after discovering a shortage of food and bedding at their luxury accommodation.
They are often accused of living like kings while their impoverished peoples suffer. Not this time, it would seem.

African leaders who attended last weekend's centenary celebrations of the African National Congress (ANC) had to embark on some hasty shopping when they found no food or bedding at their accommodation, according to a newspaper report.

Such was the indignity that the president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, was apparently forced to dispatch security guards to fetch him some grilled chicken from Nando's.

The heads of state, including some of the continent's most feared autocrats, were "angry and disappointed" by the gaffe, an article in Volksblad said. But the South African government disputes the report and says it has received no complaints. It did acknowledge, however, that Museveni may have decided to order food in addition to that provided.

There was no shortage of logistical hiccups during the events in Bloemfontein marking 100 years of Africa's oldest liberation movement. More than 40 heads of state were put up at the Woodland Hills Wildlife Estate on the edge of the city – which might have proved less luxurious than it first appeared.

"The leaders allegedly had to buy their own bedding, food, pots, pans, glasses and bottled water because the ANC had ordered the owners of the houses it rented at Woodland Hills Wildlife Estate to remove all their possessions," Volksblad claimed. "There was apparently only liquor provided."

At least 15 women hired as housekeepers, waitresses and cleaners at the estate came forward to reveal how foreign dignitaries were treated, the paper said. Mampho Mmelaedi, who was working at the house used by Museveni, was quoted as saying: "Ugandan officials had to leave Woodlands to go and buy duvets, food and other necessities for the president as there was a bed without linen."

Motladi Metsing added: "Namibian officials went to buy food, pots, plates and glasses to cook for the president. I could see he was angry and disappointed."

Kenalemang Pula claimed the Nigerian delegation arrived on Sunday morning and had packed their bags by lunchtime. And President Thomas Boni of Benin allegedly "stormed out" of Woodlands Hills immediately.

Paul Kagame from Rwanda, Teodoro Obiang from Equatorial Guinea, Bingu wa Mutharika from Malawi and Namibia's Hifikepunye Pohamba were also denied the hospitality to which they have become accustomed, Volksblad added.

"They kept asking us if we worked for the ANC or for the South African government," one of the women told the paper. "Understandably, they kept shouting at us. We were embarrassed to be there."

Around 55 houses owned by private individuals had been rented out for an estimated 50,000 rand (£3,997) a day.

Valentine Rantsoareng, joint owner of the Rantsoareng hotel group, which was contracted to equip the houses, denied there had been a failure. "I think people who make these allegations are somewhat dissatisfied because they haven't been paid yet, but I have only now received the receipt for it," he told Volksblad. He added that some of the heads of state had deviated from the menu and "asked for chicken".

A spokesman for Nando's said: "The Nando's restaurant in question was very busy throughout the weekend. Although a number of VIPs, dignitaries and security personnel purchased meals from the franchise during this time, neither the franchisee nor Nando's South Africa can confirm that they were linked to the Ugandan president."

The South African government denied it had committed a diplomatic blunder. Clayson Monyela, South Africa's spokesman for international relations, said: "We don't know what these people are referring to. The African heads of state in Bloemfontein were looked after in terms of the standard protocol courtesies extended to heads of state.

"We have not received any official complaint from any of them. Some of them stayed over until Monday and had bilateral meetings with President [Jacob] Zuma. This is just a malicious thing and we don't know where it came from."

He added: "They may have requested one or two things that were not provided in the standard hospitality. It's not unexpected. If President Zuma wants something that isn't provided he sends his staff out to get it. That's standard."

The ANC's centenary celebrations were marred by technical hitches: accreditation was chaotic for many; a golf tournament teed off late after a mix-up over the deputy president's diary.

African heads of state missed Zuma lighting the "centenary flame" in the church where the ANC was founded because they arrived well after midnight. The president had to request a recap from the chaplain on their behalf before all returned to a gala dinner that overran until 3am.

Thousands of ANC supporters who travelled to a birthday rally were angry when they were locked out of the stadium, which emptied long before the event was over.

Kutoka New York Times:

JOHANNESBURG — Heartbreak intruded on the opening day of the soccer World Cup when Nelson Mandela’s 13-year-old great-granddaughter Zenani was killed in an auto accident here early on Friday. In response, Mr. Mandela canceled a much-heralded appearance at a tournament depicted as a triumphant showcase for his country and his continent.

Zenani Mandela was returning home from the event’s Thursday night kickoff concert in Soweto, an extravaganza with stars like Alicia Keys and Shakira that was meant to launch the contest on a joyous note. At its conclusion, the sky lit up with fireworks as happy attendees made way to their parked vehicles.

According to police, Zenani died in a one-car accident on a Johannesburg highway. The man behind the wheel, who has yet to be named, was accused of drunk driving and may also be charged with culpable homicide, the police said.

Police were called after the suspects left and are still investigating, she added. No one has been caught yet.

Je, Semenya ni Mwanamke au Mwanaume?

Wadau, kuna huyo binti kutoka Afrika Kusini, Caster Semenya (18).
Mnaonaje?

UAfrika Wakumba Afrika Kusini!

Yaani wadau, hii habari inachekesha kweli! Yaani UAfrika unazidi Afrika Kusini.

Is South Africa about to become more 'African'?

April 22, 2009. South … By Scott Baldauf

Johannesburg – Rising crime, crumbling roads, pernicious corruption, and landslide victories for the ruling party in charge: these are the signs that South Africa – so "First World" at first appearance – is now on the decline.

But the one complaint that seems to top them all here these days is that the country is becoming more "African."

That particular gripe usually comes from well-to-do South Africans – white and black – who are worried about the trajectory of the country once populist leader Jacob Zuma takes power after he wins Wednesday's presidential election, which he is all but certain to do.

It's a statement that conjures the frenzied dysfunction of Nigeria, the brutal despotism of Zimbabwe, the power-madness of Kenyan politicians, and the genocidal civil wars that strike Rwanda and Sudan's Darfur.

Indeed, with Mr. Zuma – a man with a grade-school education, a polygamist, who has definitely tilted his party away from the monied suburbs and toward the black African masses – many South Africans are finally coming to grips with what it means to live on the African continent.

Yet a closer look at the values that South African blacks practice at home, and the expectations they have of their leaders, suggests that some of this pessimism – exemplified by Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio's sour explanation, "This is Africa," in the movie "Blood Diamond" – is a bit overdone. A truly majority-run South Africa may not operate the way a foreigner or European immigrant would expect, but it is also a culture with its own well-defined approach to culture and justice.

The 'ubuntu' spirit
A central concept in southern African cultures is the notion of ubuntu, which literally means "being a human being."

"If you look at ubuntu, that is the way in which people look after those who are vulnerable and weak," says Dumiso Matshazi, a political analyst in Tshwane, as Pretoria is now called. Ubuntu is a collective compassion that holds people together, that won't allow someone to starve or to remain homeless; it is the glue that can hold society together, he adds.

Ubuntu, seen in the many families who take in AIDS orphans, and in voluntary township soup kitchens, has been weakened significantly in recent years, anthropologist Pearl Sithole says, as blacks move from tightly knit rural areas to the cities in search for jobs, and as politically connected Africans use their personal connections to achieve personal wealth.

"The idea of ubuntu survives, but it has been contravened by the current economic consensus," says Ms. Sithole, a researcher at the Human Sciences Research Council in Durban. "But most communities in South Africa are bound by ubuntu, the notion that if your brother dies, you are obliged to engulf his family as your own."

Ubuntu is what South African black voters expect to hear from their leaders at election time – a reassurance that common sense and decency will prevail. Those black politicians who talk in abstract terms of economic growth may reassure white South Africans and educated members of the black middle class, but they leave many African voters cold, Sithole says.

Jacob Zuma's common touch
"People look from a point of view of what a leader can do for them," she says, and while "educated South Africans might appreciate what [former President Thabo Mbeki] has done, you hear people talk of his coldness and his abstract achievements." By comparison, "people like Zuma because he tends to spend time locally. He observes local traditions. He listens. He is sympathetic, and he can say, 'I have gone through the same thing.' "

Many white South Africans see in Zuma the stereotype of the African Big Man politician – a man who uses political power to build up himself and his cronies. But many Zuma supporters say he will be the exact opposite.

Rather than looting the national treasuries and natural resources, in the mode of Zaire's Mobutu Sese Seko, Uganda's Idi Amin, or Nigeria's Sani Abacha, they say, he will be more keen to ensure that national services like education, hospitals, clean drinking water, and electricity are shared more equitably, especially among the poor.

"The Ndebele people have a saying 'Indla muva yi nkosi,' which means 'the king eats last,' " says Matshazi, referring to an ethnic group living in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Africans expect their kings to share the largesse in a trickle-down fashion, holding massive feasts for the elders of the tribe and making decisions only after the elders have formed a consensus, he says. "An African leader who feeds himself first, like [Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe], would be seen as a useless leader, because he doesn't share."

Oprah Atetea Shule Yake Afrika Kusini

Oprah defends record of South African school

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - Oprah Winfrey acknowledged in a newspaper interview published Saturday that she has made several mistakes at her elite South African school, but said she remains proud of its success.

The recent expulsion of four girls and suspension of three others was the second scandal to hit the Leadership Academy for Girls, which opened in 2007 to groom bright children from deprived backgrounds for a brilliant career. A dorm matron is currently on trial accused of abuse and sexual assault.

"I have made several mistakes and one of them was being overprotective of the girls, which has led to an impression that the school is isolating them from society," Winfrey was quoted as saying in the Weekend Argus.

She said she had also underestimated the extent of homesickness among girls at the boarding school.

Last month, four students were expelled and three others suspended. South African media at the time said they were accused of trying to force students into relationships and to engage in sexual contact.

Winfrey herself hasn't given details of the misconduct. But she said in the newspaper interview that it was "insulting" that the family of one of the expelled girls had complained to the press even though she had been warned before about her behavior.

"Those girls in their own testimony during the (disciplinary) hearing said they knew they were breaking the rules and that they deliberately broke the rules," the talk show queen was quoted as saying.

The institution just outside Johannesburg opened with a blaze of publicity in January 2007 with about 150 girls in 7th and 8th grades. The Academy is expected to grow by one grade each year until it reaches full capacity in 2011, with approximately 450 girls in grades 7 through 12.
Winfrey poured $40 million into the 28-building campus, which is spread across 22 lush acres. It has computer and science labs, a library, theater and wellness center, all protected by strict privacy. Each girl lives in a two-bedroom suite - a far cry from their humble surroundings at home.

It's the fulfillment of a promise Winfrey made to former South African President Nelson Mandela and aims to give poor girls a quality education and prepare them for leadership positions in a country where state schools are struggling to overcome the legacy of white-minority rule.

"The majority of girls are thriving, really fulfilling the dream and vision I had," Winfrey told the newspaper. "They really have exceeded any expectations I had for them."
"In spite of everything that's happened, what keeps me inspired and hopeful is the heart of every girl, because they are wonderful, they are magnificent."

Skandali ya Ngono kwenye Shule ya Oprah

Wasichana wanne wamefukuzwa kwenye shule ya fahari ya wasichana ya Oprah Winfrey huko Afrika Kusini. Wasichana watatu wamesimamishwa kwa muda. Kisa?

Nawapa pole hao wasichana. Wameharibu wenyewe! Wenyewe wanaomba wasamehewa kwani bado wanakuwa na walitaka kufanya 'experimentation' (majaribio)!

South African Singer Miriam Makeba Dies

November 10, 2008 ,

Diane Coetzer, Johannesburg

South Africans are mourning the loss of Grammy-winning singer Miriam Makeba, who died in Italy last night (Nov. 9).

The singer has been described as "one of the greatest songstresses of our time," by the country's Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, and tributes to Makeba are pouring in from her creative collaborators.

Makeba died at the Veneto Verde hospital near Naples after performing at the Castel Volturno.

Although no official word has been received of the cause of death, the 76-year-old reportedly suffered a heart attack after taking part in a concert for Roberto Saviano, a writer threatened with death by the Mafia over his expose "Gomorrah." Her last performance was a half-hour set alongside other singers and artists.

Makeba's publicist, Cape Town-based Marc le Chat, has confirmed that the singer had been struggling with arthritis over the past years but had still been accepting key live dates.

Many here are seeing it as important that "Mama Africa" -- as Makeba was dubbed -- died after performing for a cause that puts human rights in the spotlight.

Makeba had first come to fame as a singer with the Manhattan Brothers in the 1950s. She later formed her own group, the Skylarks, and joined the cast of the now iconic musical "King Kong." In 1959 she starred in the anti-apartheid documentary "Come Back, Africa," which led to a meeting with Harry Belafonte, who helped Makeba gain entry to the United States, where she lived in exile.

Among her many notable achievements was becoming the first African woman to win a Grammy, gor Best Folk Recording in 1966 with Belafonte for "An Evening With Belafonte/Makeba." Makeba also scored hits with "Pata Pata" and "The Click Song."

Zanzibaris killed in SA foreigner attacks

2008-09-15

By Mwinyi Sadallah, Zanzibar

Two Zanzibaris were reportedly killed in Port Elizabeth, South Africa last week in attacks linked to a spate of `xenophobic` incidents against foreigners, police here confirmed yesterday.

The Regional Police Commander for Mjini Magharibi Bakari Khatibu Shabani named those who were killed as Mzee Mussa Makungu (24) and Rajab Suleiman Mrisho (27) all from Jan?gombe in Unguja.

The late Makungu went to South Africa to look for employment, while Mrisho had already been working in the oil industry there for over eight years.

The two were buried in Unguja yesterday, Makungu at Shakani village and Mrisho at Kiboje.

Makungu`s uncle Ali Othman Ali said in an interview yesterday that they received reports about his death from Tanzanians living in South Africa.

``Makungu left Zanzibar six months ago to join his friend Mrisho, who has been in South Africa for eight years,`` he said.

Ali said they were informed that their relative was shot twice in head, while Mrisho was shot in his neck by unidentified people on September 4, this year.

Rajab Suleiman Mrisho, a brother of Mrisho, said they received reports about his death through Tanzanians living in Cape Town.

Some months ago, groups of South Africans, particularly youths, went on the rampage, attacking foreigners working in South Africa, and blaming them for taking up jobs meant for them.

Ati wearing a mini-skirt is wrong!Nwabisa Ngcukana, 25, had to parade but naked at the Noord Taxi Rank after a mob of taxi drivers stripped and tore her clothes. Her crime was wearing a short skirt. They torn skirt and panties as you can see from picture below..."I have never been so traumatised in my life. I thought these taxi drivers were going to rape me," Ngcukana said. "

As they stripped me they kept shouting that this is what I wanted. Some were sticking their finger in my vagina while others poured alcohol over my head and called me all sorts of names." Well, what did the South African women do?

A female radio DJ asked people to call in and they talked: I would feel disappointed if this is not debated in the next Parliament sitting But more importantly, they did not just talk. Of course, they took action. They organized a mini skirt march http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7276654.stm%3E and went over to the taxi rank.

S. African Reggae Star Lucky Dube Killed in Attempted Car-Jacking

By Scott Bobb Johannesburg 19 October 2007

South African Reggae star Lucky Dube has been killed in an apparent car-jacking attempt. The 43 year-old musician was shot Thursday night in a suburb south of Johannesburg. Correspondent Scott Bobb reports from our bureau there.

South African police say the renowned Reggae musician was shot by three gunmen as he dropped off his son in the Rosettenville suburb of Johannesburg.

Police spokesperson Lorraine Van Emmerick told national radio that Lucky Dube's daughter also witnessed the shooting.

"He was hijacked. He was able to flee from the scene," said Van Emmerick. "His children were out of the vehicle at the time Mr. Dube was shot. He was declared dead at the scene by the paramedics."

Lucky Dube achieved world fame through music with a social message such as this 2003 song about the ravages of AIDS, called "Number in the Book."

He received some 20 awards during his 25-year career and was the first South African musician to be signed by the Motown recording label in the United States.

Born in 1964 to an impoverished family in northeastern Mpumalanga Province, Lucky Dube released his first album at the age of 18 years. He began his career performing the urbanized Zulu music called Mbaqanga. But he also recorded albums in Afrikaans, the language of the white minority.

Dube made his mark on the international scene with Reggae music and became one of the best-known African vocalists of the genre.

His first Reggae album, Rastas Never Die, was banned by the apartheid government in the mid-1980s.

The spokesman for Dube's Gallo music label, Arnold Mabunda says Dube was one of the country's most successful musicians.

"He was one of the biggest contributors in the South African music industry. Yeah. And now we are saddened," said Mabunda.

South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world, with nearly 20,000 homicides last year. Many of the killings occur during robberies and hijackings. These are common in a country where one-half of the population lives on less than $2 per day.
