First A/H1N1 flu case confirmed in Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The first A/H1N1 flu case confirmed in Tanzania was a British student who was hospitalized earlier this month, Tanzanian medical official told Xinhua on Thursday.
The male teenager was among a group of students and teachers who flew into the east African country from Britain via Kenya several days ago to carry out volunteer work, Andrew Swai, director of clinical services at the country's main referral hospital Muhimbili National Hospital, said to Xinhua on phone.
"He is well now, not infectious, and will be out of hospital tomorrow," Swai noted, adding that earlier diagnostic test showed the victim was positive for A/H1N1.
Preparations for the epidemic have already started in Tanzania, while the Ministry for Livestock Development and Fisheries is working closely with health, tourism, home affairs and infrastructure ministries to monitor the flu, according to government officials.
Before Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia in east Africa had already confirmed their first A/H1N1 cases in recent days.
So far, A/H1N1 flu has infected more than 94,000 people in the world, including 429 deaths, according to the World Health Organization.

Arusha, Tanzania - Tanzania's deputy minister of health says a visiting British student has been confirmed as the country's first case of swine flu.
The east African nation is the fourth African country to report a confirmed case of the H1N1 virus.
Deputy Minister Dr Aisha Kigoda said Thursday the student arrived in the commercial capital of Dar es Salaam a week ago as part of a group of volunteer students. The student told immigration officials he felt unwell and was sent to hospital immediately.
Kigoda says Tanzania has contingency plans in place to contain the virus.
The World Health Organisation has confirmed 429 deaths from the virus worldwide and nearly 95 000 infections since it was first reported in Mexico in March. - Sapa-AP

My swahili isn't very good. what do you mean by the term "mzungu". I always thought it referred to somebody's race i.e. white. Yet there is nothing in the report to indicate the race of the patient. Both reports refer to a "british student". This is just a matter of citizenship, not race. In your view is one classified as a mzungu on the basis of race or citizenship? If the former, why do you assume that british = white (whatever 'white' means).
