Tanzanian Marathoners Put Kenyan Runners on the Alert!

By Josiah Kibira

If you follow the results of almost any marathon in the United States, you are bound to find one or more Kenyans in the top 10. In most cases, Kenyan runners place in the top three finishers, and, often times win the whole race.

It is no different in Minnesota, where both the Grandma’s Marathon of Duluth, and the Twin Cities Marathon have been dominated by Kenyan runners.

Running a marathon is not an easy proposition to undertake, in fact only 1% of all human beings do participate in this challenging sport. It is often compared to an analogy asking, “Why do you keep hitting yourself with a hammer? Because it feels good when you stop.”

But Kenyan runners have dominated this sport worldwide, a fact that Tanzanian runners find hard to swallow. When confronted by the subject, most will always bring up Filbert Bay, a Tanzanian who was not even a marathon runner, but won a gold medal in the Olympic Games many years ago.

I have been a maratho n runner for over 14 years. I try to run a marathon every year. Last year I was surprised at about mile 15 or so, wondering why can’t I see mile 16 marker on the horizon, when suddenly I heard someone say, ”Vipi, mzee! I looked up, to find a Tanzanian in the middle of the pack of runners.

We exchanged few words, and I should say, I was in worse shape than he was at that point in the race, then I urged him to proceed ahead without me. He did, but then it somehow gave me an immediate surge of energy. Seeing him was like saying, ”Wabongo na sisi tumo”, or “We, the Tanzanians,…got this!”… or so I thought.

I was proud because it was the first time in my fourteen years of running that I actually met a fellow Tanzanian in the race...running.

After the race, I made a po int of getting in touch with the Tanzanian runner so that we could tell the world and put the Kenyan runners on alert for the next marathon! Who knows? We may one day beat them! It could happen!
He surprised me, when he mentioned that there was yet another Tanzanian who was also in that same Twin Cities Marathon that day.

This is about us…the Tanzanian Marathoners and why we run.

Meet Gracious Msuya.

He started running before he ever landed in the United States. He was a student at the University of Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania. You can see his dedication to the sport because Dar can be very hot and it takes a serious commitment to run.

Running is such a personal decision because you have yourself for motivation. Gracious found motivation in the promise he made to his young kids that he would run the marathon once the kids were teenagers. His kids still have years to become teenagers, but the statement itself motivated him to start training instead of waiting so long.

The other motivator for him is his health. It is a proven fact that there are many health benefits from running including reversing the aging process. That’s right, you not only reverse the aging process, and sometimes you can even delay it.

I asked Gracious if there was anyone who inspired him to run, he said when he was in primary school (Elementary School) he saw a man who was in his 30’s who used to run and practice Karate. That was it. Gracious’ actual running would come later in his adult life as a student at a University.

Gracious admits running a marathon has not been easy. To date, he has run about 5 full marathons and a few short races. “It takes time and it is simply hard,” he remarks. But he also admits that the challenges of life do not make this easy. Balancing work and family is difficult enough, and squeezing in training time as well makes life all the more interesting. All in all, the advantages of running far outweigh all the hassles one goes through.

Gracious has high hopes for Tanzanians or any one who wants to take up running. In his words, he says “If you can walk a mile, you can run a mile.” One first mile could be a start to running many miles in the future. He also offers words of encouragement stating not to be afraid to start something new because in the end you may surprise yourself.

So, to all Kenyan runners, look out! Gracious Msuya is coming!

My inspiration to run came to me by accident. After I graduated from college in Kansas, I moved to Minneapolis. It was after the Twin Cities Marathon was completed and I was reading the race results in the paper. As I read at the men’s results list, I saw that there was a 99 year old man who completed the race in 5 hours and 20 minutes. This was enough for me. I thought, if a 99 year old man can complete a full marathon, I should be able to complete one. I have never looked back and I have logged 14 marathons ever since.

I use running as meditation. Most of the movies I have written were conceived as I ran. Right now I have a few movie plots in my head, and as I run, the plots get polished.
I agree with brother Msuya, “If you can walk a mile, you can run a mile.” It is a discipline that has taught me to be in control of my many aspects of life, especially the fact that I don’t quit easily and I don’t sweat the small stuff. I always tell myself that it is only mile 5, with 21 more to go. With this perspective, there are few things that surprise me.

And this is why we run. A sense of accomplishment. A sense of setting a goal and achieving it. A sense of an overwhelming individual success. This can be transferred to any aspect of life, finances, school, career, family. Because really at the end of the day, we are first answerable to ourselves…

And yes, even beating Kenyan runners…it can happen!

So guys and gals – “TWENDE KUKIMBIA….”

Know any Tanzanian runners? Share the story with us!! - Josiah

Naomba huyo Gracious Msuya aje mwakani akimbie Boston Marathon! Kweli waKenya wame-dominate!

Ngono Uliponza Uchumi wa Marekani?

Jamani, mimi nimeblow kusikia habari hizi. Eti wataalam wa uchumi wa SEC (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission) walikuwa wanatazama ngono (pono) kwenye mtandao badala ya kulinda uchumi wa Marekani! Hebu someni habari hizi halafu mjadili.

Mbona sehemu nyingi za kazi hapa Marekani huwezi kuangalia pono wala kutumia e-mail kama yahoo/hotmail ukiwa kazini! Tena wameweka vizuizi. Haya makubwa! Ngono uliponza uchumi wa Marekani!

SEC Staffers Watched Porn as Economy Crashed

(CNN) -- As the country was sinking into its worst financial crisis in more than 70 years, Security and Exchange Commission employees and contractors cruised porn sites and viewed sexually explicit pictures using government computers, according to an agency report obtained by CNN.

"During the past five years, the SEC OIG (Office of Inspector General) substantiated that 33 SEC employees and or contractors violated Commission rules and policies, as well as the government-wide Standards of Ethical Conduct, by viewing pornographic, sexually explicit or sexually suggestive images using government computer resources and official time," said a summary of the investigation by the inspector general's office.

More than half of the workers made between $99,000 and $223,000. All the cases took place over the past five years.

The inspector general's report includes specific examples of misuse by employees.
A regional office staff accountant tried to access pornographic Web sites nearly 1,800 times, using her
SEC laptop during a two-week period. She also had about 600 pornographic images saved on the hard drive of her laptop.

Separately, a senior attorney at SEC headquarters admitted to downloading pornography up to eight hours a day, according to the investigation.

"In fact, this attorney downloaded so much pornography to his government computer that he exhausted the available space on the computer hard drive and downloaded pornography to CDs or DVDs that he accumulated in boxes in his office," the inspector general's report said.

"It is nothing short of disturbing that high-ranking officials within the SEC were spending more time looking at pornography than taking action to help stave off the events that brought our nation's economy to the brink of collapse," said Rep. Darrell Issa. The Republican is a ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

"This stunning report should make everyone question the wisdom of moving forward with plans to give regulators like the SEC even more widespread authority," he said. "Inexplicably, rather than exercise its existing regulatory enforcement authority, SEC officials were preoccupied with other distractions."

The investigation came to light on the same day President Obama gave a speech in lower Manhattan, calling for reform in the finance industry.

On Capitol Hill, the Senate is working on a reform bill that would set up regulatory oversight of the financial industry's practices with the goal of preventing another Wall Street meltdown like the one in 2008 that launched the U.S. recession.

The bill includes an "early warning" system intended to spot signs of crisis, as well as a $50 billion liquidation fund created with money from banks and other finance industry corporations to ensure an orderly transition in closing down failing entities. It's approved by the Senate's Banking and Agricultural committees.

The House passed its version of the bill in December.

Gavana Deval Patrick Akutana na Waafrika wa Massachusetts

Leo, Gavana wa Massachusetts, Bwana Deval Patrick, aliongea na waafrika waishio Massachusetts. Mkutano huo uliitwa African Town Hall. Ilifanyika Tobin Comunity Center mjini Boston.

Hao waGanda walipiga ngoma wakati Gavana anaiingia ukumbini.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Mexican-born actress Fernanda Romero has had bit parts in such movies as the horror film "Drag Me to Hell," but federal prosecutors say her biggest act was pretending to be a bride.

The 28-year-old actress and husband were arrested Friday at their separate Los Angeles homes and charged with marriage fraud, the U.S. attorney's office said. They contend Romero paid Kent Ross, 28, to marry her in 2005 so that she could become a U.S. resident.

Authorities said the two never lived together and Romero, whose full name is Maria Fernanda Romero Martinez, submitted phony documents with her residency application.

An investigation began after Romero's ex-boyfriend, fashion photographer Markus Klinko, told immigration authorities her marriage was a sham. The couple started dating after Romero and Ross were married.

If convicted, Romero and Ross could be sentenced to up to five years in federal prison.
Romero has had roles in several small films and is moderately well known in Mexico, where she appeared in the TV Azteca soap "Eternamente Tuya." She has also appeared on the Spanish-language channels Univision and Telemundo in the shows "Control" and "La Ley del Silencio," respectively.

According to her website, she has appeared in television and print ads for several U.S. companies, as well as a music video. She moved to Los Angeles when she was 18 to study fashion design, according to her site.

Messages to her publicist were not returned Friday.

A phone message left for Ross' attorney, Mike Shannon, also was not returned.
Romero and Ross were both released after initial court appearances Friday. However, a judge restricted Romero's travel to certain Southern California counties and said she could not leave the country.

Special Assistant U.S. Attorney James M. Left, said immigration officials began investigating in 2007 after Klinko mentioned the marriage during a lawsuit he filed in New York.
Left says a marriage ceremony was performed on June 12, 2005, but the couple never lived together.

He said immigration marriage fraud cases may be brought in either criminal or immigration courts. The case against Romero was pursued because of "the overwhelming amount of evidence" and repeated misstatements by the actress, Left said.

"Immigration benefit fraud is a serious crime," said Miguel Unzueta, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agent in charge in Los Angeles. "Not only does it potentially rob deserving immigrants of benefits they rightfully deserve, it also undermines the integrity of our nation's legal immigration system."

Mume Mzuri!

A guy woke up in the morning with a terrible hangover. Next to the bed was a couple of aspirins, a glass of water, and a note from his wife ? ?Honey, there's a hot breakfast waiting for you in the kitchen. Love, your wife?. He looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotlessly clean. So is the rest of the house.

He stumbles into the bathroom and notices a huge black eye. After shaving, he goes to the kitchen, and sees that the hall mirror is broken too.

His son is in the kitchen and as he's eating his huge breakfast the guy asks the son what all this is about.

Well, last night you came home drunk off your ass, stumbled into the mirror and hit your head on the doorknob. Mom helped you to bed, and as she's trying to get your pants off you kicked her away and said get off me lady, I'm married?.

If you really enjoyed this story please forward to friend. Or reply and let us know. You might make someone's day!

Midume Mkome - Yaliyompata Todd!

Todd's Funeral.....Burial of a Husband Liar..

Todd works hard at the office but spends two nights each week bowling,
and plays golf every Saturday.

His wife thinks he's pushing himself too hard, so for his birthday she
takes him to a local strip club.

The doorman at the club greets them and says, 'Hey, Todd! How ya doin?'

His wife is puzzled and asks if he's been to this club before.

'Oh no,' says Todd.. 'He's in my bowling league.

When they are seated, a waitress asks Todd if he'd like his usual and
brings over a Budweiser.

His wife is becoming increasingly uncomfortable and says, 'How did she
know that you drink Budweiser?'

'I recognize her; she's the waitress from the golf club.

I always have a Bud at the end of the 1st nine, honey.'

A stripper then comes over to their table, throws her arms around
Todd, starts to rub herself all over him and says, ‘Hi Toddie. Want
your usual table dance, big boy?'

Todd's wife, now furious, grabs her purse and storms out of the club...

Todd follows and spots her getting into a taxi.

Before she can slam the door, he jumps in beside her.

Todd tries desperately to explain how the stripper must have mistaken
him for someone else, but his wife is having none of it.

She is screaming at him at the top of her lungs, calling him every 4
letter word in the book.

The cabby turns around and says,

'Geez Todd, you picked up a real bitch this time.'

Todd's funeral will be on Saturday.

Dk. F. Mghanga Akumbuka IlivyokuwaTanzia ya Mh. Edward Sokoine

Asante Da Subi kwa kuleta habari hizi:

Pichani -Edward Moringe Sokoine (1938 - 1984)

Hakika hatukujua lililokuwa limetokea masaa machache yaliyopita hapa nchini kwetu.

Sauti iliyojaa huzuni ikasikika.

Hakika ndivyo aliomboleza mama yule.

Huzuni kuu ikaniingia ghafla. Nikajiwazia "Sokoine kafa? Hapana, amekufa?" Nafsi ilikataa kuamini, akili ya utoto ikaniambia haiwezekani. Ghafla machozi yakaanza kunitiririka. Naam nililia. Nilimlilia mzalendo wa kweli. Wazazi walilia, wananchi walilia, hata Nyerere alilia tena hadharani, hakulia kiunafiki alilia kweli.

Watanzania wapenda haki tulilia, tulimlilia mpenda haki mwenzetu.

AMIN.

SHUEBA, Yemen (AP) - A 13-year-old Yemeni child bride who died shortly after marriage was tied down and raped by her husband, her mother said.

Nijma Ahmed, 50, told the Associated Press late Friday that just before her daughter lost consciousness she described how her 23-year-old husband had tied her up and forced himself on her. She bled to death hours later.

Elham Assi died April 2, four days after she was married. A forensic report said her vagina and rectum were deeply ripped, causing her to hemorrhage.

The practice of marrying young girls is widespread in impoverished Yemen. Traditional families prefer young brides and poor families can be lured with hundreds of dollars in gifts.

The UN child agency, UNICEF, says one of three girls in Yemen is married before the age of 18.
"Early marriage places girls at increased risk of dropping out of school, being exposed to violence, abuse and exploitation, and even losing their lives from pregnancy, childbirth and other complications," said regional director Sigrid Kaag, in a statement Wednesday condemning the death.

Tribal custom also plays a role, including the belief that a young bride can be shaped into an obedient wife, bear more children and be kept away from temptation.
Last month, a group of the country's highest Islamic authorities declared those supporting a ban on child marriages to be apostates.

A February 2009 law set the minimum age for marriage at 17, but it was repealed and sent back to parliament's constitutional committee for review after some lawmakers called it un-Islamic. The committee is expected to make a final decision on the legislation this month.
The issue of Yemen's child brides got widespread attention three years ago when an 8-year-old girl boldly went by herself to a courtroom and demanded a judge dissolve her marriage to a man in his 30s. She eventually won a divorce, and legislators began looking at ways to curb the practice.

In September, a 12-year-old Yemeni child-bride died after struggling for three days in labor to give birth, a local human rights organization said.

Mbaguzi Eugene Terreblanche Ameuwawa!
