SEASONED and veteran journalist, Adam Lusekelo (54) passed away while being rushed to Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) on Thursday night, his wife Scolastica Lusekelo, said. Ms Lusekelo said the deceased’s health deteriorated on Thursday night when relatives rushed him to MNH.

“He didn’t even reach the hospital, he breathed his last on the way at around 11pm,” Ms Lusekelo said. The 'Sunday News' columnist has been battling diabetes for a long time and was surviving on medication.

“Oh, no! We have lost a 'Sunday News' readers’ favourite,” lamented the newspaper’s Editor, Ichikaeli Maro upon receiving news of Mr Lusekelo’s death. His column, a unique blend of writing serious issues of national importance with a soft touch, won many hearts and souls.

“My husband will miss him badly, he was his favourite columnist,” said Joyce Sabuni, Tanzania Standard Newspapers employee in the circulation section.

TSN Acting Managing Editor, Mkumbwa Ally also mourned the death of one of journalism’s most gifted writers.

Burial arrangements are being made at his home at Ubungo Maziwa, but the body is likely to be transported to his home region of Rungwe in Mbeya, his wife said. The late Lusekelo is survived by a wife and three children, two daughters and a son.

He worked with TSN briefly in the 1980s before joining BBC as a correspondent based in Dar es Salaam.

Adam Lusekelo Atoa Ushauri Kwa Steven Kanumba

Ni kweli anavyosema, ukiwa star utasemwa we! Na ukweli ni vizuri ukiwa star usemwe. Hapa Marekani hao mastaa wanataka wasemwe kila siku hata kama ni mambo mabaya kusudi watu wasisahau majina yao!

Take it easy Steven Kanumba
By Adam Lusekelo

I SAW a video of young Steve Kanumba complaining and sulking that most of his age-mates in Bongo seemed to be overjoyed, that his butt got kicked out of the Big Brother thing in Sausi.

He said that the dogo dogo media in Bongo seemed to mock him that the way he pronounced his English words was murder to the language. That in the near ending holy month of Ramadan he was not fasting, but ‘closing.’ That after that he would ‘open’ for 'futari' every evening.

I wouldn’t worry too much if I was Steve. Those guys who have been laughing at him hardly know the English language themselves in the first. It is very easy to be shot down by a bunch of mediocrities.

I mean if people want to laugh at all those lingual hostilities in any language to others, they should hear Indians speaking Kiswahili. You feel like grabbing them by their throats and ask them to speak properly.

Listen to the Bagandas in Uganda . They don’t want to speak Chiswayili is the language of the oppressor. The language was spoken by Ugandan murderous dictator and his goon squad. It reminds them of terrible days.

They laughed at Steve not because of his murder of the English syntax. They did that principally because of envy. Steve had made it to Sausi. Most people hate success. They get very uncomfortable and would want to pull them down as soon as the stars of the winners are on the ascent. It’s like that.

No one knew anything about Steve, no one cared. But as soon as he started featuring in films, he came under a magnifying glass. When you become famous people want to know the colour of your underwear everyday.

They want to know who your girlfriends are and how they look. Often times they will say that she is as ugly as some ghost. That her legs are as long as a baby giraffe’s. It is human nature.

What Steve should do is not to get angry and wallow in self-pity. The fellow should get smart. Ask the British Council in Dar and I am sure that they will be more than helpful to smoothen the hick-ups in the language.

If there is time Steve should also go for French and Japanese or Chinese. You see, a lot of guys (bums, if you ask me) think that speaking English with a nasal accent makes you smart. This is the latest lingual con-manship.

I was editor for this newspaper for 8 years. I noted one thing – all those nasal voiced con-men and women might sound good in pronunciation. Ask them to write a five-paragraph story in English and you end up getting Kisukuma with bits of English words in it.

So young Steve should go on with his acting career. But he should not forget that language and school helps in furthering careers. Now, after ‘closing’ on the whole Holy Month of Ramadan, he should ‘open’ for Idd-Al-Fitr and like all of us, enjoy the festivities. alusekelo@gmail.com http://adamlusekelo.blogspot.com/

Muungano - Maoni ya Adamu Lusekelo

Mwalimu Nyerere na Mzee Karume wakikamilisha Muungano 1964

I first thought that the on-going blah blahing between politicians of the different sides of the political divide in Mainland and Zanzibar would go away. It was too petty to warrant any attention. But, as you know, politicians love attention. They have made it an issue. I haven't.
I find it too silly, to be given such attention. All I know is if some politicians in the islands want out they should be given that opportunity. Let's ask the people of the Zanzibar and Pemba sister islands. Over the years, I have had no problems with unions, especially with my chicks. If they want out, I let them opt out. You can't force someone to love you.
If some politicians in Zanzibar (nchi) want to be called a country otherwise they will commit ‘hara kiri’, then let’s call them 'nchi'. In fact I suggest that we should even call Zanzibar 'nchi' twice. The name should be Nchi Zanzibar Nchi! That way the united republic will be rid of this nonsensical debate.
The United Republic has mega problems. We cannot get water in Dar. I haven't heard anything from the Bunge. Zanzibar has been in the dark for almost two months. I have yet to hear of anyone in the House of Reps fiercely coming down on the Revolutionary Government in Zenj.
Our country is being looted left, right and centre by a cabal of politicians in collusion with international 'investors'. What do you get from the Bunge and the House of Reps? Nothing! Zilch! And now Premier Mizengo 'Pete' Pinda comes with the 'nchi' thing and the whole is awash with this silly debate. It shows how idle some circles in our society are.
I know that politicians have to speak something. But I think they have to speak using their heads, not their mouths! What does the average Zanzibari in Mwanakwerekwe in Zanzibar benefit from being called 'nchi'? Absolutely nothing! What does the average mainlander in Tabora Region benefit from being called Tanzania nchi? If the politicians think they will benefit from making an issue of the 'nchi' thing, they should stand out and be counted. They should stop to manipulate the issue.
Let's just ask the people of Zanzibar and Pemba if they want the Union or they want out – and then let's respect that choice. It is very boring to see politicians, especially in Zenj, wanting to make political kudos out of the Union issue. Be warned people of Zenj, as we are busy wasting people's time talking hot air about 'nchi' thing the people of Pemba are also stirring. They also want out. They want their own government!
And times have changed. You just cannot force a people to love you - not even using guns. For guns have the habit of running out of ammo. Once you run out of ammo the SMG is useless, especially when facing a population armed with 'pangas'. I think it’s about time we revved up the Union and ask the people concerned if they want it or not and not listen to political clowns who want to make political hay out of nothing.
The prices of food are forbidding; and the hospitals are empty with the doctors fleeing abroad. Now they even want to pinch our teachers. Those politicians are making an issue out of being called 'nchi'. That is total nonsense!
UN deputy Secretary General, Asha-Rose Migiro has just told Tanzanians that as far as she was concerned, the UN recognises a country called the United Republic of Tanzania, not Zanzibar! Knowing how silly some of the politicians can be, they must be seething and saying that the UN deputy secretary general should be caned for - saying the truth.
Any way, whatever the outcome of the referendum, I still would like my country, which I love very much, to be called Tanzania. That is whether there is another country called Zanzibar 'nchi' or another country the Republic of Pemba. Just go for it! Predictably, those fellows would go for each other’s throats so fast, they will never know what has hit them.
