Flaviana Matata - Miss Universe Tanzania 2007

By Godfrey Mushi
27th May 2011

U.S. Mulls Implications Of Early Use Of HIV Drugs To Stop AIDS Spreadby Richard Knox
May 26, 2011
The Obama administration is beginning to think through the ramifications of what may be the most far-reaching AIDS study ever done.
Earlier this month federal officials announced the results of a big clinical test that showed if HIV-infected individuals get antiviral drugs early — while they still feel fine and their immune systems are intact — their chances of passing the virus on to someone else go down to almost zero.
The implication: If all the HIV-infected people in the world got the drugs, the 30-year-old pandemic could be brought to an end. Nobody expects that to happen overnight, maybe not ever. But the administration's chief AIDS strategist is leading a what-if discussion within the government.

Yaani! Je, Barrick watawasaidia wafiwa, mfano huyo mjane mwenye mimba?
**************************************************************
Kutoka TORONTO STAR:
TARIME, TANZANIA—It was on the side of a dirt road in northern Tanzania that relatives found a coffin containing the body of Emmanuel Magige on Tuesday morning.
The 27-year-old man was one of seven people killed and more than 12 injured on May 16 when villagers at African Barrick’s mine in northern Tanzania clashed with security forces.
Late Monday night, police stormed a mortuary in the small northern town of Tarime and removed bodies belonging to four of the dead in a bid to prevent a memorial planned at the mine for Tuesday, witnesses said.
After finding the bodies of the victims forcibly returned to their villages, families instead held small burial services at their homes in the afternoon.
“It was inhuman. They did this like animals,” said Magige’s 20-year-old wife, Mary.
African Barrick is a subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corp., which is headquartered in Toronto.
African Barrick said on Tuesday that it had no knowledge of the incident.
Barrick, which employs its own security guards as well as government police in order to guard the gold mine, has said that in the May 16 incident more than 800 “intruders” invaded the mine, where locals often come to scavenge for rocks containing gold.
Relatives of the deceased had wanted to hold a memorial service Tuesday at the mine, but say they were informed by police Monday that they would not be allowed to go ahead with the ceremony.
Families of the deceased and their supporters went to the mortuary in Tarime to guard the bodies of their loved ones because they had received information that police might try to steal the bodies.
Six trucks filled with police arrived at the mortuary at 10 p.m., according to relatives who were on the scene.
“The security officers came and asked us what we were doing there,” said Gasaya Matiku, whose 19-year-old nephew, Chacha Ngoka Chacha, was killed at the mine. “They surrounded people and started beating them. Then they took the bodies and put them on a truck.”
Witnesses said eight people were arrested by police and beaten with sticks and the butts of guns before they were taken away.
The arrested include an opposition member of the Tanzanian Parliament, a lawyer from an environmental non-government organization and a relative of one of the dead.
They were charged with criminal trespassing, unlawful assembly and obstructing a medical practitioner in the execution of duty.
Police said the accused had interfered with families’ plans to bury the victims’ bodies.
“They were just people from the opposition party who had nothing to do, so they decided to play a joke for their own benefit, trying to convince the families not to take the bodies and bury them,” said the regional police commander, Paul Ntobi.
Families of the deceased said they were angry at the treatment of their loved ones’ bodies.
“In our culture, this is a taboo. To do such a thing means that those who did it to you despised you,” said Magige Gati, Emmanuel’s father.
“I’m furious. If I could manage to get a gun, I would fight the government personally. The same police force that killed my son stole his body and dumped it.”
The government’s handling of the episode has been beyond callous, according to the families.
Gati said that when he visited the district commissioner to seek help, the official instead told him: “It was very unfortunate that they managed to kill only a few. The law is different in Tarime than in the rest of Tanzania. ”
Mary, the wife of Emmanuel Magige, said her husband got most of the family‘s income from digging for gold-laced stones at the mine.
Eight months’ pregnant with the couple’s first child, now that her husband has been killed, she doesn‘t know how she will survive.
“I will struggle,” she said.
Mauji Tarime - Maiti Zadhalilishwa!
Habari Kutoka WAVUTI.Com

Ukitaka kwenda huko BOFYA HAPA:
Recent Police Action at North Mara
May 19, 2011 — The recent violent confrontation and loss of life at African Barrick Gold’s (ABG) North Mara mine is deeply concerning to Barrick and ABG. African Barrick Gold is working with the Tanzanian government and police to address this situation.
While ABG is still determining all the facts associated with this complex situation, the following is based on information released by ABG and the Tanzanian Police to date:
On May 16, a large group of intruders, many of them armed with machetes, stones and mining implements, stormed the ore stockpile at North Mara, with the intent of stealing ore. Initial reports put this number at 800, but following further reviews, the number is likely to have been more than 1,500. Given the extremely large number of aggressive intruders and the escalating threat of violence, ABG contacted the Tanzanian police for protection. Faced with over a thousand armed intruders, the mine’s main duty was to ensure the safety of its employees.
The Tanzanian police report that upon arriving at the scene, they tried to contain the situation. Police fired warning shots into the air and used tear gas to try to stop the attackers from advancing; however, the organized mob of armed intruders refused to turn back. A violent confrontation ensued as the intruders engaged in a sustained attack on police. A number of intruders were injured in the confrontation, seven fatally. The police have also reported that a number of their officers were injured in the confrontation.
Situations like this are deeply troubling to Barrick, ABG and to the people who live and work around the mine. The vast majority of people living near North Mara share the same desire for security and safety as we do. Both police and company investigations are now underway into the fatal shootings, which involved Tanzanian police. ABG security was not involved in these fatal incidents and, generally, does not deal with incursions of this magnitude and level of organization.
The North Mara mine operates under particularly challenging and complex circumstances, primarily associated with the law and order environment. The mine is located in a very remote, underdeveloped part of the country in close proximity to the Kenyan border, with limited law enforcement capacity, resulting in break-downs in law and order. Organized crime is also present in the region. The operation regularly faces illegal intruders, who may be armed and aggressive. These actions put hundreds of lives at risk, including ABG employees.
ABG is actively engaging with the Tanzanian government to address the severe law and order issues and lack of police resources around North Mara and in the wider community. ABG continues to make improvements to physical security at the site and engage with local community leaders. Its objective is to engage proactively with the community in long-term solutions to these challenges, to improve relations and resolve legacy issues, and to increase community investment expenditures aimed at improving quality of life in the area.
Barrick and ABG remain committed to the long-term future of North Mara and to the stability and security of the communities surrounding this operation.

Woman accused of trying to sell girl's Virginity
SALT LAKE CITY – A Salt Lake City woman has been charged with offering her 13-year-old daughter's virginity to a man for $10,000.
The 32-year-old woman was charged Monday in Utah's 3rd District Court with two first-degree felony counts of aggravated sex abuse of a child and two second-degree felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.
If convicted, the woman faces a lifetime prison sentence for each first-degree felony and a zero to 15 year sentence for each second-degree felony.
In court papers, prosecutors allege that the woman had discussed letting her daughter perform oral sex and other sex acts with an adult male. The negotiated offer and an arrangement to exchange the teen's virginity for money were detailed in a string of text messages which were seen by the woman's boyfriend, who called police, court papers say.
In a police affidavit also filed with the court, investigators say the woman acknowledged the agreement and said she and the girl had been modeling lingerie for the man in a local store and at their home near the Utah State Capitol. Investigators say the woman said she had also taken pictures of her daughter wearing only a bra and skimpy, thong underwear and sent them to another adult male.
In the same affidavit, the girl told police she initially agreed to the sex-for-money arrangement, but later told her mother that she did not want to go through with it.
The Associated Press is not naming the woman to avoid identifying the daughter.
No court dates have been set in the case and it wasn't immediately clear if the woman had an attorney.
The mother is being held in the Salt Lake County Jail. Bail is set at $250,000. A corrections officer at the jail said the facility does not take telephone messages for inmates.
A check of Utah State Court records shows the woman has a criminal history that includes misdemeanor convictions for illegal drug possession and driving under the influence. A forgery case filed against her in 2007 was dismissed after she successfully completed a court-ordered drug treatment program.

Strauss-Kahn alikamatwa kwenye ndege huko JFK Airport ikiwa karibu inaruka kwenda Ufaransa.

************************************************************
Burning of the Mabanda
The burning of the mabanda belonging to ‘Wabara’ at Pwani Mchangani in Zanzibar has become a big story, treated as a criminal or a political act by Zanzibaris against mainlanders. It may be both, but nobody has asked where the root of the problem may lie in the economic and social sphere.
The first question that may be asked is whether all these 80 or so shops indeed belonged only to mainlanders, and there were not any belonging to local people. From the picture that I have seen, the whole area was swept clean. If this was the case, then the second question is how such an odd situation could have arisen in a fishing village in Zanzibar, that suddenly there should be such an flood of the ‘wabara’, without providing any opportunity to the local people to benefit from any development there.
The answer may lie in the way tourism has invaded Zanzibari villages, and how it has undermined local economy and society. I remember going to nearby Nungwi village in 1979 before the tourism invasion. It was not a rich village, but it was to a considerable extent a neat village and a comfortable self-reliant community subsisting on local agriculture and fishing, selling the surplus to the town. When I visited the same village last year, it had been turned upside down, and I could not recognise it at all. It has been flooded with shops blaring loud music, with bars and mabanda selling all sorts of things to tourists and others. It resembles Kariakoo.
A couple of years ago there was a conflict there where women of the village came out demonstrating against the huge inflow of prostitutes who they said were breaking up their families there. Some years previously, a politician extended his bar into one of the streets of Zanzibar Stone Town against the existing law, with drunkards and prostitutes blocking the street that even a self-respecting man would not dare to pass, let alone women. He was approached by one of the European neighbours, but he was rudely told to shove off. Other neighbours approached the police, but they did nothing to enforce the law. Where everything failed, some disgruntled person resorted to the bomb. Overnight, the bar went indoors where it was supposed to be according to the law in Zanzibar.
More recently several bars that had sprung up in the middle peaceful residential communities in Zanzibar were burnt. In the recent case also there have been complaints that the mabanda were haunts of bars and prostitutes.
Did the government or the police take any action to deal with the grievances of the local villagers to prevent the destruction of these communities for the sake of the tourist dollar and those pursuing them? Therefore, should we be surprised that some local villagers would resort to be taking law into their own hands when those responsible fail to fulfil their duties?
We should not be surprised, without necessarily condoning such acts. This has been taken by the authorities as a criminal act, and they have promised the ‘full force of the law’ to suppress it. It has been interpreted by those affected as hatred by Zanzibaris against wabara. If there is such ‘hatred’, there must be a reason.
In the persisting widespread discontent in Zanzibar against the Union, which many see as not having benefited the smaller partner, but on the contrary, is destroying local communities, why should we be surprised that it may become a demonstration of the underlying political problem?
Some people on the mainland have raised the spectre of a similar treatment against Zanzibaris on the mainland. If Zanzibaris become responsible for a similar disruption of the local economy and society in their new homes on the mainland, they may suffer a similar backlash.
However, this should not stop us from asking some fundamental questions about our economic policies, especially about tourism, to the neglect of everything else, without considering the social, cultural, and even political consequences to our country and its people.

Mwanariadha MKenya Ajiua Baada ya Kukutwa Ugooni!
The circumstances of his death remain murky, complicated by reports that he had multiple wives.
Mr. Wanjiru’s wife Tereza Njeri reportedly found him in bed with another woman. Following an argument, Tereza locked her husband in the bedroom and ran away.
“He then jumped from the bedroom balcony,” police chief Jasper Ombati told the Associated Press. “In our estimation, we think he wanted to stop his wife from leaving the compound.”
By many accounts, the prodigious runner’s dramatic death prematurely ended what was blossoming into a historic career.

Bwana Arusi ana Miaka 100, Bibi Arusi Miaka 90!
Doh! Wamejuana karibu miaka 28. wote wanakaa kwenye nyumba ya wazee. Nawatakia maisha mema ya ndoa. Kumbe hata ukiwa na miaka bado wamo! Ila Zaeni matunda mema haifia kusemwa hapa.

For some people, it's never too late for love.
That's certainly the case for Forrest Lunsway and Rose Pollard, an Orange County, Calif. couple who were married this March 19, Forrest's 100th birthday. With a combined age of 193--Rose is a spring chicken--they're believed to be the world's oldest newlyweds.
A spokesman for the Guinness Book of World Records said they had been informed of the wedding and are set to verify it as a record. For 27 years, Forrest smoked a pack of cigarettes a day, and he still drinks the odd glass of wine or whiskey and 7-Up, he said in a recent interview with the The Daily. He attributes his longevity to never having had a desk job: He spent his youth trapping animals and selling their fur in Kansas before moving to California, where he worked as a pipe welder.
You can watch a video of them here.
Both Forrest and Rose had been married before, but were single when they met back in 1983 at a senior's dance. Though they soon started dating, wedding bells seemed unlikely.
'I told him up front I had no intention of getting married," Rose said. "But then one day he asked me 'how come we never got married? and I said 'because you never asked me.'"
''So he got down on one knee and said, 'Well I'm asking you now, just set the date.' I told him, 'I'll marry you on your 100th birthday.' And I did."
And being on the older side, the couple also has some wisdom to share on how to make a marriage work. Rose, 93, told The Daily: 'Take your time and get to know one another. Get to know if you like all the things that person stands for. ... Be forgiving and patient and say I love you once in a while."
Rose also told The Daily that their advanced age means that she and Forrest don't have many of the anxieties that can be a challenge for other newlyweds. "That's one of the things we can forget about--time. Because time doesn't mean that much."
And it's time well spent together: They both love ballroom dancing, and they want to kayak in Alaska and walk the coast of California.
"We've got many happy years left as I intend to stick around until I'm at least 110," Forrest said. "You've got to use it or lose it."

Wataalam Wasema Dawa ya Babu Inafanya Kazi Kiasi
A technical report on retired pastor Ambilikile Masapila’s “miracle cure” has indicated that scientific data supports his claims to its positive effects on a number of ailments.
A report by experts from the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) Department of Traditional Medicine Research and Institute of Traditional Medicine, Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences seen by The Guardian, says study findings have revealed that ‘Babu’s miracle cure’ prepared by boiling the roots of Carissa edulis plant is safe and has positive effects on cancer, epilepsy, herpes simplex virus, liver ailments, diabetes, blood pressure and anti-viral activity.
However, the scientists said since the remedy is being widely used by an exceedingly large number of patients, the government should advance the work of focused pre-clinical studies to establish pre-clinical efficacy and safety of the remedy.
“The dose provided by Pastor Masapila which is one cup (about 200 mls) prepared through boiling an estimated 3.0 kg of whole root material in 60 litres of water “falls within safety window and no any overdose or acute poisoning event is expected.”
The results suggested that the plant has anticonvulsant activity which supports the claim of the use of the plant in the management of epilepsy as claimed by Pastor Ambilikile Masapila.
It further indicated that the herb has antidiabetic activity which supports the claim of the use of the plant in the management of diabetes.
The herbal has blood pressure lowering activity which supports the ethnomedicinal claim of the use of the plant in the management of high blood pressure.
Research results show that the pastor’s concoction has hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity which are beneficial in the prevention of liver disorders and cancer.
“This result also reveals that Carissa edulis has potent anti-viral activity against herpes simplex viruses. Taking into consideration that, herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is a major opportunistic infection in immunosuppressed persons, these findings supports the ethnomedicinal claim of the use of the plant in the management of HIV/Aids as claimed by Pastor Masapila,” said the report.
Drawing general conclusion, scientists said that the plant is safe and the dosage prescribed by Rev. Mwasapila is below the toxic level.
They, however, recommended that since the remedy is being widely used by an exceedingly large number of patients, focused pre-clinical studies need to be conducted to establish pre-clinical efficacy and safety of the remedy.
Scientists also recommended standardisation and formulation of “Babu’s cupful” for human use.
“MoHSW should conduct clinical trial on the prescribed remedy to establish in vivo efficacy and safety in humans and answer questions on optimum dosage, dosing schedule and duration of treatment per ailment,” stated part of the report.
It added “MoHSW should conduct clinical follow up on all patients recorded to have used the remedy for their prognosis.”
Recently, many people have been flocking Samunge village in Loliondo, Arusha, seeking the cure for chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, cancer and HIV/Aids.
According to Rev. Masapila, God instructed him through dreams since 1991 about the medication and that, it will heal people with chronic illnesses namely: diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, cancer and HIV/AIDS. The dream kept recurring to him several times since then and on August 26, 2010 he decided to obey on the instructions and started the healing work.
Earlier this month, HIV/Aids stakeholders blamed the government over its silence on HIV/Aids patients who abandon antiretroviral drugs after taking the herbal concoction being dispensed by Pastor Masapila in Loliondo.
HIV/Aids stakeholders said there was need to give correct messages to the people to avoid negative impacts in future.

Kutoka The Citizen:
5 Kiteto villagers die of Aids after abandoning ARVs
Monday, 02 May 2011 22:17
By Joseph Lyimo
Kibaya. Five residents of Sunya village in Kiteto District, Manyara Region who had tested HIV positive are reported to have died after abandoning anti retroviral drugs (ARVs) in favour of a herbal concoction from a 'miracle healer' in Loliondo.
Their deaths occurred shortly after arriving back from Samunge village where the retired pastor Ambilikile Mwasapila has been dispensing liquid drink from a local herb he claims cures a range of chronic diseases, including Aids. A councillor for Sunya Ward, Mr Mussa Brighton, confirmed the deaths of the villagers, saying they had just returned back home from Loliondo where they went to seek treatment from Rev. Mwasapila.
Mr Brighton, who is the vice chairman of the Kiteto District Council, said the five had reportedly abandoned using the life-prolonging ARVs as recommended by medical doctors as one of the arsenals against killer Aids.Unconfirmed reports said the deceased had been telling people after returning from Loliondo that they had stopped using ARVs because they were feeling better after taking a cupful herbal drink from "Babu.”
The councillor warned that the trend was not good because, people who had tested positive should not abandon the ARVs dose from medical facilities. He could not disclose the names of the deceased. He argued that the sudden rush to Loliondo for herbal cure offered by the spiritual healer should not make people discard the recommended medicines.

Osama bin Laden Ameuawa!
