World Cup Journalists Robbed

(CNN) -- Three journalists covering the World Cup in South Africa were robbed of money, passports, cameras and computers early Wednesday, police said.
Armed suspects entered three hotel rooms where the journalists were staying near the town of Magaliesburg, police Col. Charmaine Muller told CNN.
Two of the victims "slept through the whole thing", but a Portuguese photographer woke up as it was taking place at about 4 a.m. local time (10 p.m. Tuesday ET), she said.
A suspect pointed a gun at him and told him to keep quiet, she said.
Police were called after the suspects left and are still investigating, she added. No one has been caught yet.
Hundreds of thousands of sports fans and journalists are descending on South Africa for the World Cup soccer tournament, the biggest sporting event in the world this year. It begins Friday.

Maangamizi is a film in the genre of Daughters of the Dust and Sankofa, it even stars Babrara O from Daughters of the Dust. So let's get to point of this film that has won awards at several international film festivals, though few have heard about it.
I have long maintained that before African Americans can heal the trauma of White Supremacy they must make peace with their southern roots, the pain of slavery in all its vicissitudes. This film justifies my thesis that we must indeed come to peace with the terror of Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and the rest of the south before we can truly be healed. Whatever the south meant to us or means to us now, we must come to grips with it before we can deal with Mother Africa.
In the film the African American psychiatrist (Barabra O) goes to Tanzania to work in a mental hospital, but she cannot heal the Africans until the Africans come to terms with who she is as long lost daughter and she cannot deal with Africans until she is woman enough to confront the terror of African American oppression, there is a leitmotif of lynching to allow us to see her suffering, even though she is a doctor on a mission to heal her African brothers and sisters.
But she cannot heal her primary patient until the patient understands that the doctor from America is her salvation, not in a medical sense but in a spiritual sense.

After the African sister is traumatized by seeing her father burn her mother to death in a hut, the child refuses to speak until the wise woman Manzamizi (also grandmother) entreats her to connect with her African American sister, that is her salvation.
But as I said above, the African American must heal from the terror of America, not their disconnection with Africa as we are usually told. Supposedly, we cannot heal until we come to terms with our Africanity, but this film flips the script as many revolutionaries and radicals have discovered: we must come to terms with our Americanity in all its vicissitudes. Afterwards, we will have no problem with Africa.
With their attitude of jealousy and envy as expressed in the film, clearly, it is Africans who must adjust to African Americans. The film showed our African brothers and sisters as the playa haters of African Americans, and certainly the star patient had reservations about reconnecting with her African American sister, but this was the point of the film: that until Africans come to terms with African Americans, no healing can come to Africa, even though she has her neo-colonial problems with religion, Western religion, Christianity, the father being so dogmatic and savage that he burns his wife alive because her daughter is supposedly under witchcraft when it is clear the father is a devil under the power of a pseudo-Jesus. What Jesus told him to burn his wife alive in the granary hut?
The most powerful scene is the father in hell begging his daughter for forgiveness. And she forgives him, thus transcending the pseudo-Christianity of her father, to the objection of her wise woman, grandmother, Maanzimizi, who said to hell with the father, let him burn in hell for dissing the ancestors in favor of Christianity.

Can anyone tell me the origin of the word dezo?
In standard Swahili it means anything obtained free of charge. Sometimes I like to think of it as dazzle or daze which is to stun and bewilder.
Surely that explains the feeling of happiness after being endeared?
Anyway, I recall sinema dezo, back in the sixties and early seventies. Movies would be shown for free across Tanzanian fields and football pitches.
We watched the Charlie Chaplin, Stanley Laurel and Oliver Hardy series, then known as Chalii Mnene na Mwembamba. They were not only funny they also help build the Swahili vocabulary.
Charlie or Charley became Chalii or Chale, which in Swahili is a funny or humorous person. Movies not only entertain but also create new words thus helping shaping a national language.
By the mid-1970s, sinema dezo was out and in came the cinema halls. Our mothers and sisters flocked to watch afternoon movies (matinee) from India.
Nobody spoke Hindi, but the songs were loved. Does anyone recall i (which means Sometimes) and Sholay? The stories were long; movies went on for three hours plus.
Some of these Hindi films had strong social political messages like Mother India and Namak Haraam. I recall seeing them without subtitles and loving them across Dar es Salaam halls – Empire and Empress (in the Askari Monument area), Avalon, Odeon and Cameo.
For those who did not like these Hindi movies with their exaggerated sentimental singing and tears, there was an alternative option: Bruce Lee and kung fu, whoo, whaa films.
These flicks razed and grazed our halls until early eighties when the economic doom chocked and slapped everyone. The only consolation were second-hand imported ‘B’ movies like the soft porn wave Emanuelle.
From then on until around the arrival of mainstream television in the mid-1990s we had nothing. The film industry in Tanzania has always been thirsty and hungry.
Before Josiah Kibira's efforts in 2003 with the production of the Bongoland series we had only Fimbo ya Mnyonge as a Swahili movie of any substance. Mwalimu Nyerere must have gone to his grave wondering, will it ever be?
Lately because of this hunger we have started munching Nigerian and South African films.
US-based Josiah Kibira says he used to watch the Nigerians and wondered. His Bongoland one and two tale is a convincing narrative about dreams of a young Tanzanian totally gone wrong.
Like Obama's presidential win in 2008, Kibira uses the Internet well to publicise and sell them in a well packaged and organised product.
And that is the story of May-June 2010.
Lovely Gamble, a Swahili-English, film has just been released in the UK by young Tanzanian filmmakers. I have seen the flick and attended the launch last weekend in Reading, a few kilometres out of London.
I do not think Lovely Gamble is anything close to Bongoland. The storyline is simplistic, with an ending that women especially will find uninspiring. However, its release has heralded a new chapter in our filmmaking.
In 2008, I watched and listened to Spike Lee, the African American filmmaker, answering a crucial question in London. Many of us asked him why he never makes films about Africa. He said we should do it ourselves and in collaboration.
“Be a gang, form a posse...,” said the creator of Inside Man, Malcolm X, Do the Right Thing and She Is Gotta Have It.
Makers of Lovely Gamble, known as Urban Pulse, have already ticked this box. Urban Pulse unites not only a group of Tanzanians, but other Africans and Caribbean youths. They are all multi-skilled and multitalented.
Launching the event, which also raised funds for HIV orphans in the UK and Tanzania, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation at our London High Commission, Amos Msanjila, made a lively speech that summed up why the film industry is so important for any nation.
Brand Tanzania, is what Swahili movies may create and help reinforce. Nigerian and Hindi films have helped popularise their countries, the diplomat said. Then there is the use of Kiswahili a language rated amongst ten fastest growing in the world.
Not to forget employment opportunities. Making films is an activity involving a lot of people: technicians, actors and business people. But before going any further we need to make convincing films.
Films depend on well-written stories, researched materials and high standard acting.

KIGALI, Rwanda (AP) - A Rwandan judge has charged a U.S. lawyer with denying Rwanda's 1994 genocide and publishing articles that threaten the country's security.
Peter Erlinder pleaded not guilty to the charges during a five-hour court hearing late Friday in the Rwandan capital, Kigali.
"It is the first time I have come to know that my obscure publications back in America were that bad and could amount to genocide denial," Erlinder told the court. He suggested it may be a case of misinterpretation or misunderstanding.
If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison. Erlinder was upset when the judge said he will decide on Monday whether to grant bail.
Erlinder - a professor at William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota - has a reputation for taking on difficult, often unpopular defendants and causes. A past president of the progressive National Lawyers Guild, Erlinder leads a group of defense lawyers at the U.N.'s International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, which is trying the alleged leaders of the 1994 genocide.
The genocide claimed the lives of more than 500,000 people, mostly Tutsis and moderate Hutus. The massacres ended when mostly Tutsi rebels led by President Paul Kagame defeated the mostly Hutu extremist perpetrators.
Erlinder said Kagame's party might dispute his writings, but "not all Rwandans."
He said he had ignored warnings from his tribunal colleagues not to travel to Rwanda, where he had spent several days helping opposition leader Victoire Ingabire in her presidential election challenge before his May 28 arrest.
"I believed the country has grown democratically, but if I am detained and prosecuted, my case will be confirm what is being said out there," Erlinder said.
Appearing weak in court, Erlinder asked to be granted bail so he could return home for treatment, and promised to comply with any conditions the court sets.
He said he hadn't been mistreated, but also had not had contact with anyone while in Rwandan custody.
"I haven't talked to anyone in my family, I haven't listened to the radio or watched TV since I was arrested. I haven't talked to my doctor," he said.
Judge Maurice Mbishibishi said he would decide Monday whether to grant bail.
Prosecutor Richard Muhumuza argued against it while investigation was ongoing, but agreed not to object if a medical examination determined Erlinder needed treatment in the United States.
Authorities are considering a joint medical evaluation involving a doctor of Erlinder's choice, Foreign Affairs Minister Louise Mushikiwabo said, while rejecting a U.S. request made Thursday for the lawyer's release on compassionate and humanitarian grounds.
"We are sensitive to medical and health conditions, whether it's for American citizens or others, but we cannot short circuit the legal process, so we stand advised by mental health professions on what needs to happen," Mushikiwabo said.
Erlinder was hospitalized Tuesday after police said he took dozens of pills in an attempted suicide. Erlinder's family said it did not believe that.
Meanwhile, the Hutu opposition leader Ingabire was in court Friday to attend Erlinder's hearing.
She plans to challenge Kagame for the presidency in Aug. 9 elections, and had asked Erlinder for legal advice in defending herself against charges of promoting genocidal ideology.
After returning to Rwanda in January from the Netherlands, Ingabire had visited a memorial to Tutsis killed in the 1994 genocide and asked why Hutus who died weren't also remembered.
She was arrested and freed on bail, but her passport was seized and she cannot leave Kigali. If cnvicted, Ingabire, 41, could be sentenced to more than two decades in prison.

NEW DELHI (AP) - As many as 160 people were feared dead after an Air India plane arriving from Dubai crashed Saturday as it overshot a runway while trying to land in southern India.
Television images showed dense black smoke billowing from the aircraft surrounded by flames just outside the Mangalore city airport in a hilly area with thick grass and trees.
Firefighters sprayed water on the plane as rescue workers struggled to find survivors. One firefighter ran up a hill with an injured child in his arms.
Officials in the state of Karnataka said of the 169 people believed on board, only six or seven might have survived.
"This is a major calamity," Karnataka Home Minister V.S. Acharya told CNN-IBN TV.
The aircraft overshot the runway, hit a fence and went beyond the boundary wall of the airport, according to the Press Trust of India.
The crash could be the deadliest in India since the November 1996 midair collision between a Saudi airliner and a Kazakh cargo plane near New Delhi that killed 349 people.
The airport's location, on a plateau surrounded by hills, made it difficult for the firefighters to reach the scene Saturday, officials said.
Pre-monsoon rains over the past two days caused low visibility in the area, officials said.
Mangalore airport is about 19 miles (30 kilometers) away from Mangalore city.

Tanzania Ferry Capsizes; Hundreds Die
BUJUMBURA, Burundi — A Tanzanian ferry crammed with passengers--many of them teenagers returning home from school--capsized in Lake Victoria early Tuesday, and reports from the scene said hundreds of people drowned.
Witnesses and survivors, in accounts relayed by news agencies and Tanzanian radio, reported that many of the estimated 600 passengers were trapped under the ferry after it capsized just off the port town of Mwanza, on the southern shore of Lake Victoria 600 miles northwest of Dar es Salaam, the Tanzanian capital.
Confusion surrounded rescue operations, and it was uncertain how many aboard died. But even in the confusion it was clear that large numbers of people--probably more than 400--drowned.
Mass transportation accidents are common in sub-Saharan Africa. Ferries and buses--often long past their years of peak function--are frequently overcrowded and poorly maintained.
There were suggestions that both factors contributed to Tuesday's accident. But government officials said the vessel had recently been deemed fit for service.
The steamship was near the end of a 110-mile, regularly scheduled trip to Mwanza from Bukoba, on the lake's western shore, just south of the Tanzanian border with Uganda. Tanzanian radio and witnesses reported more than 600 passengers packed the craft even though government officials said it was supposed to hold only 441 people.
Some witnesses said in broadcast reports that the vessel did not have an organized ticket-taking procedure, making a precise accounting of those aboard extremely difficult.
Details of the accident and the number of those killed remained unclear in the often-conflicting accounts. But as the overwhelming scale of the catastrophe became known, Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa declared a three-day period of mourning to mark what he called "a national tragedy."
Tanzanian radio reported that the accident occurred when the steamship, the MV Bukoba, struck a rock and sank about 6 a.m.
The radio reported that only 40 people survived the accident. But spokesmen for the state railway company that owned and operated the ferry contended that more than 100 passengers were rescued by boats dispatched to the scene with rescue workers.
Many of the passengers were believed to have been teenage Tanzanian students heading home at the end of the spring term. It was not clear where they were attending school, but Tanzanians frequently travel to Uganda for secondary and higher education.
Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake, covering 27,000 square miles, is the second-largest freshwater lake in the world, after Lake Superior.
Mwanza is a major port, from which much of Tanzania's cotton, tea and coffee are exported.

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama's Kenyan aunt can stay in the United States, a U.S. immigration judge has ruled, ending a more than six-year legal battle over her status.
Judge Leonard Shapiro made the decision Friday, court officials told CNN.
Two government sources confirmed Monday that the ruling will give legal status to Zeituni Onyango, 57, allowing her to remain in the country.
Onyango's attorneys held an afternoon news conference on the matter in Ohio.
Onyango, who is the half-sister of the president's late father, applied for political asylum in 2002 due to violence in her native Kenya. She was a legal resident of the United States at the time and had received a Social Security card a year earlier.
Onyango's asylum request was turned down in 2004. She appealed the rejection of her request twice, but was denied each time and ordered to leave the country. Onyango remained in the country illegally until April of 2009, when Judge Shapiro gave her permission to stay in the United States while he considered her case.In February, Onyango arrived at an immigration court in a wheelchair and testified before the judge for more than two hours, her representative, Amy Cohn, told CNN at the time. Two doctors, including her personal physician, also testified on her behalf. Onyango's medical condition was part of her legal defense against expulsion.
White House officials said during the appeals that Obama was staying out of the matter.
"The president believes that the case should run its ordinary course," the officials said.
Onyango's immigration status came to light in the final days of the 2008 presidential race.

The Makonde mask, which was worn at male initiation rites by the animist ethnic group, was taken by burglars from the National Museum of Tanzania at Dar Es Salaam in 1984 and bought by the Swiss museum the following year. An official "mask-giving" ceremony will take place in Paris on Monday between representatives of the Geneva-based Barbier-Mueller museum and the Tanzanian museum, under the guidance of the International Council of Museums.
The Barbier-Mueller said in a statement that in 1990, a professor at an Italian university told it that the Makonde mask in its collection could have come from the Tanzanian museum and it informed the council.
The Barbier-Mueller museum, founded in 1977, then began the process for an eventual return of the mask to Tanzania, under certain conditions. "The return of the Makonde mask is a happy end to more than 20 years of negotiations and efforts by the two parties, with the help of the ICOM," the statement said.

Kifaru huyo anaitwa Archie na ana miaka 41. Wafanyakazi wa zoo walipoenda kazini asubuhi hawakumkuta kwake. Kwa bahati walimkuta kwenye eneo la tembo. Lakini wanasema Archie alikuwa mbishi na alikuwa hataki kurudi kwake. Ilibidi wampigie risasi enye dawa ya usingizi.
Hebu mwone huyo Archie (pichani). Mbavu zake zinaonekana, anaonekana mnyonge pia. Anajua maisha nje ya hiyo zoo kweli. Lakini sidhani kama anaelewa kuwa kama angekuwa porini asingeishi muda mrefu maana wale poachers wangemwua kwa ajili ya hiyo pembe yake. Eti unga wa pembe ya kifaru inaongeza uwezo wa mwanamme kufanya ngono!
Hapa Boston sokwe alitoroka kutoka Franklin Park Zoo. Walimkuta kakaa kwenye kituo cha basi karibu na zoo. Siku nyingine sokwe huyo huyo alitoroka na kuzaba vibao kila mtu ambaye alikutana naye!

Lena Horne Afariki Dunia Akiwa na Miaka 92.
Lena Horne 1917-2010
(pichani Lena Horne akiwa na Bill Robinson aka. Bojangles na Cab Calloway mwaka 1943)Wadau, leo tunamka kusikia habari ya kifo cha Lena Horne. Lena alifariki jana huko New York akiwa na miaka 92. Aliishi maisha marefu.
Lena alipambana sana na ubaguzi Hollywood. Alikuwa mweupe mno, na mara nyingi ilikuwa akiigiza katika sinema na wazungu ilibidi wampake make-up kusudi aonekane mweusi zaidi na wazungu wasidhani ni mzungu. Wakati huo sinema zilikuwa zinapigwa katika black & white.
Safari yake kwenda Hollywood ilianza mwaka 1933 alipokuwa katika stage show ya Cotton Club huko, New York. Lena aliigiza katika sinema, Cabin in the Sky. Katika hiyo ni kimada wa Little Joe. Walipiga scene ambayo Lena alikuwa anaoga katika bathtub huko akiimba akijiandaa kwenda kwa Little Joe. Scene ilikatwa eti kwa vile wazungu hawataamini kuwa weusi wanaoga!
Lena alikuwa mwimbaji maarufu pia. Aliimba katika klabu nyingi, na pia katika bendi za Noble Sissle, Duke Ellington na Cab Calloway. Alikuwa katika sinema The Wiz pia na Michael Jackson na Diana Ross.
Mwaka 2004 ilikuwa watengeneze sinema kuhusu maisha yake. Janet Jackson ndo alikuwa stelingi wake. Lakini baada ya Janet Jackson kuonyesha titi lake kwa umati akiwa kwenye Superbowl, Lena Horne alisema hataki "mtu mwenye fikra za kimalaya" aigize kama yeye. Alisha Keyes atakuwa stelingi wa hiyo sinema.

KiSwahili Yamponza MRundi New Hampshire - Anusurika Kuuwawa
Jamani, kumbe yule baba aliyekuwa kwenye ile basi ya Greyhound huko Portsmouth, New Hampshire ambaye walisema kabeba bomu alikuwa ni MRundi!Na wala hakuwa na bomu! Alikuwa anaongea kwenye simu ya mkononi katika lugha ya kiswahili kwenye basi. Mama moja wa kizingu eti kasikia eti kasema, "BOMB ON BUS'! Watu wanasema huenda jamaa alisema Obama!
Sasa watu wamezidi! Ukiwa mweusi umevaa nguo za kijeshi, unaongea lugha ambayo mzungu haelewi basi unaweza kupigwa risasi hapa Marekani!
Polisi wa SWAT (FFU) walitumwa kwenye eneo la tukio. Waliwaambia watu washuke kwenye basi mikono mitupu huko wamezipandisaha juu. Huyo baba wa KiRundi hakuelewa inatokea nini, kabaki kwenye basi. Basi ndo wakaamua ni kweli ana bomu.
Naona huko New Hampshire polisi hawakuwa na kazi siku hiyo. walituma, mizinga vifaru (tanks), pia robot alitumwa. Nilimwona kwenye TV akiwa kwenye mlango wa basi, na kamera yake. Wataalamu wa bomualikuwepo yaani ukitazama kwenye TV unaweza kuanguka kwa vicheko baada ya kugundua kuwa fikra za kibaguzi zilizosabaisha huo mkasa!
Polisi kwa aibu, hawakumkamta yule MRundi. Bali walimkamata mzee wa kizungu mwenye miaka 68, amabaye walisem kuwa aligombana na polisi, na MMarekani mweusi ambaye walisema aliwapa jina la uongo! Jina la huyo MRundi wamehifadhi. Lakini jamani wanavyoongea utadhani Swahili inongelewa katika sayari gani sijui!

(NECN: Portsmouth, N.H.) - Two men were arrested following a nine-hour standoff on board a Greyhound bus in Portsmouth.
The last man off the bus, whose hesitation resulted in a six-hour delay to the end of the standoff, was not one of the men charged. That man, who is from Burundi, Africa, has been released but not publicly identified by police. A passenger reported hearing on the other end of his phone conversation that a bomb was on the bus. That caused the 911 phone call to which police responded and sprung the standoff.
Officials believe the Burundi man did not get off the bus when instructed due to language, cultural and social barriers. His native tongue is Swahili.
"We took the time and additional resources to locate a family member and additional resources to locate a family member who spoke with this person in his native tongue of Swahili and helped to assure the man that no harm would come to him if he surrendered to the police officers outside the bus," Police Chief David Ferland said.
Where he is from, police said, people fear law enforcement -- they believe he feared he would be shot if he exited the bus. His hesitation delayed the end of the incident by six hours. He is in the country legally, police said.
The two men who were charged in the incident will be arraigned Friday afternoon. John Smolens of Lewiston, Maine was charged with resisting arrest or detention. Chief Ferland said the charges stem from his refusal to follow the orders of SWAT team members and refusal to cooperate in the overnight bail process.
Calvin Segar of Brooklyn, N.Y. was charged with two counts of obstructing governmental administration for providing false names and false information, according to the police chief.
The two were scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 Friday afternoon in Portsmouth District Court. The incident is not considered an act of terrorism, rather a "local event."
The police chief thanked all the agencies that participated in the peaceful conclusion of the nine-hour standoff, and apologized to the local businesses and citizens who were inconvenienced by the evacuation and closure of the area.

Ukosefu wa Maji Safi Boston
Wadau, nikikukumbuka shida ya maji Bongo, lazima nicheke na vituko vya watu hapa Boston na miji kadhaa iliyoathirika shauri ya bomba kuu la majio kupasuka huko Weston.
Basi leo, huwezi kununua kahawa, wala chai. Sehemu chache walikuwa wanauza na walikuwa wanatumia maji ya chupa kutengeneza. Huko watu wanalia kukosa kahawa ya asubuhi, mimi nilileta kahawa ya unga kutoka nyumbani, nilichemsha maji ya kutoka kwenye bomba la jikoni kwenye microwave. Watu wamenishangaa mno! Walinitizama kama nina kichaa!
Nilienda Shaw's supermarket huko Fenway jana kununua mahitaji machache jana. Nilipoingia pale mbele walikuwa na zile packs za chupa 24 za maji, $3.99. Ilikuwa palate nzima. Nivyotoka zilibaki mbili tu!
Watu wameambiwa wasifue nguo wala kuosha nguo na hayo maji! Hapa kazini walitupiga marufuku kunawa mikono. Walisema ukinawa lazima utumie hand sanitizer.
Jana mzungu fulani kanipigia simu na kuniambia niwapigie watu wote kwenye idara yangu simu kuwaonya kuhusu maji. Nilimwambia kuwa huo bomba ulipasauka zaidi ya masaa 24 iliyopita, hivyo huenda watu wamekunywa. Na bila shaka watakuwa na habari kwa vile iliotangazwa kwenye vyombo voyte vya habari na miji kadhaa iliwapigia simu watu kuwaonya. Pia nilimwambi nilikuwa natoka kwenda kwenye shughuli saa hiyo. Mzungu alianza kulia oh watu wataugua sana usipowapigia simu! Jana ilikuwa jumapili!!!!
Hayo maji yanayotoka kwenye bomba ukitazama yanaonekana masafi kweli kweli. Huko Bongo watu wangesema ni salama. Wengine wangetia kwenye chupa na kuuza!
- Watu wamepigana mangumi madukani wakigombania chupa za maji.
- Poland Springs, Dasani, Everest, na hao wengine wanaotengeneza maji ya chupa wa ruka ruka kwa furaha. Shareholders wao watapata faida kubwa kweli mwaka huu!
- Maduka mengi yamepandisha bei ya maji. Mayor Menino anagomba!
- Watu wanafaya hoarding ya maji! Unakuwa mtu ana minivan imejaa maji! Sasa maduka wanawauzia watu crate mbili tu!
Lakini jamani, lazima niulize. Hivi watu wanashindwa kuchukua sufuria na kuchemsha maji ya kunywa? Huenda wamesahau! Maana siku hizi kila kitu ni take-out, microvae, frozen!
