POLICE have arrested three more
suspects in connection with the attack on a prominent politician, don,
lawyer and a member of the Constitution Review Commission (CRC), Dr
Sengondo Mvungi, bringing the total of those arrested to nine.
Home Affairs Minister, Dr Emmanuel
Nchimbi, told reporters in Dar es Salaam that the suspects were found in
possession of one stolen mobile handset, five machetes and a
traditional three-legged stool.
Dr Nchimbi attributed the
investigation’s success to the cooperation shown by the media, which he
praised for refraining from speculating on the case, the victim’s family
and the public in general.
“We can positively note that 80 per cent
of investigation on this case has been successful; the arrested
suspects have been cooperative and only 20 per cent of the work needs to
be completed,” Dr Nchimbi explained.
He said after interrogations, the
suspects confessed their involvement in the attack of Dr Mvungi and
cooperated fully with the police, leading to the discovery of the
weapons used in the attack and the stolen mobile handset.
Dr Nchimbi was accompanied with his
deputy, Mr Pereira Ame Silima and the Dar es Salaam Special Zone P o l i
c e C o m - mande r , M r Suleiman Kova.
Mr Kova named the nine suspects as
Msigwa Mpopela (30), also known as Matonya, who is also leader of the
group, Chibango Magozi, Ahmed Alit, a resident of Mwananyamala, Zakaria
Raphael Mses (23), a resident of Buguruni Malapa and Marda Saluha (40),
also known as Mr White, a resident Vingunguti.
Others are Paulo Jairos (29), also known
as Ndonondo from Vingunguti, Juma Hamis (29) from Vingunguti, Longishu
Sewalike (29) from Msimbazi and Masaga Makenza (41), a bodaboda
operator, who resides in Kitunda.
Mr Kova told reporters that the
attackers did not have a political motive. ‘’It was plain robbery as
confessed by the suspects on interrogation,’’ he added.
Dr Mvungi sustained serious head
injuries following the midnight attack last week at his residence in
Kibamba Msakuzi in the city by six people believed to be armed robbers.
He was rushed to the Muhimbili
Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) where he was later referred to Milpark
Hospital in South Africa, owing to the slow pace of his recovery. The
armed robbers managed to get away with a laptop, pistol and undisclosed
amount of money.
