Congo Restaurant bombed on Christmas Day!

BENI, Congo (AP) -  A bomb has exploded at a restaurant as patrons gathered on Christmas Day and killed at least seven people in eastern Congo. Mayor Narcisse Muteba told The Associated Press that the victims included two children and that investigations were underway to find the perpetrators. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack though Islamic extremists claimed a suicide bombing back in June that caused no other casualties. The town has long been targeted by rebels from the Allied Democratic Forces which traces its origins to neighboring Uganda. But an Islamic State group affiliate claimed responsibility for two explosions in Beni in June.

Church Choir Members Die in Bus Accident in Kenya

Kenyan police say at least 18 people died after a bus carrying choir members to a wedding plunged into a river in Kenya today Saturday, December 4, 2021.

 Mwingi East Sub-County Police Commander Joseph Yakan said the driver tried to steer the bus past a flooded bridge, but the strong current swept the vehicle into the river. He said 10 people were rescued. The choir members of Mwingi Catholic Church had been traveling for their male colleague's wedding when the accident occurred in Kitui County. Officials said the incident is under investigation.

Tanzanian Writer Wins Nobel Prize for Literature - Abdulrazak Gurnah

 Associated Press STOCKHOLM (AP) -  Tanzanian writer Abdulrazak Gurnah has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The Swedish Academy said the award was in recognition of his "uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism." Born in Zanzibar in 1948 and based in England, Gurnah is a professor at the University of Kent. He wrote 10 novels, including "Paradise," which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1994. The prestigious award comes with a gold medal and 10 million Swedish kronor (over $1.14 million). Gurnah was lauded for characters who "find themselves in the gulf between cultures ... confronting racism and prejudice, but also compelling themselves to silence the truth or reinventing a biography to avoid conflict with reality."

Basi, malkia na familia yake walishuka kwenye gari, na walitembea kwa miguu kwenye  kapeti nyekundu kuingia Ikulu.  Prince Philip alisimama, na kutangalia sisi wanafunzi.  Akauliza,  nyie ni wanafunzi wa shule gani, kwa Kiingereza,  Wanafunzi waliokuwa karibu na mimi walikimibia.  Nikamjibu,  " We are students from Zanaki Girls Secondary School.  (sisi ni wanafunzi kutoka shule ya sokndari Zanaki".  Akauliza  shule ilikuwa inaitwa nini zamani, nikamwambia, Aga Khan Girls.  Alisema  asante, na kuendelea kuingia Ikulu.  Doh!  Niliongea na Royalty!  nilirudi yumbani kwa furaha na kuwasimulia wazazi wangu na marafaiki jinis nilivyoongea na Prince Philip.

Mara baada ya kuapishwa alipigiwa mizinga 21 na kukagua gwaride maalumu kwa mara ya kwanza akiwa kama amiri jeshi mkuu wa majeshi ya Jamhuri wa Muungano wa Tanzania.

 Dar es Salaam. Rais wa Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania, John Magufuli amefariki dunia Machi 17, 2021 katika Hospitali ya Mzena jijini Dar es Salaam ambako alikuwa amelazwa akipatiwa matibabu.

Taarifa za kifo cha Rais Magufuli, zilitangazwa jana na Makamu wa Rais, Samia Suluhu Hassan ametangaza kifo akisema Magufuli alifariki dunia saa 12 jioni kwa maradhi ya moyo baada ya kulazwa katika hospitali hiyo tangu Machi 6.

Amesema awali, Rais Magufuli alifikishwa katika Taasisi ya Moyo ya Jakaya Kikwete (JKCI) Machi 6 akisumbuliwa na tatizo la moyo la mfumo wa umeme ambalo alikuwa nalo kwa zaidi ya miaka 10.

“Machi 14 mwaka huu, alijisikia vibaya akakimbizwa hospitali ya Mzena ambako aliendelea na matibabu chini ya uangalizi wa madaktari na wauguzi wa Taasisi ya Moyo ya Jakaya Kikwete hadi umauti ulipomkuta,” amesema Mama Samia.

Amesema Tanzania itakuwa katika kipindi cha maombolezo ya siku 14 na bendera zitapepea nusu mlingoti. Alisema wananchi watajulishwa juu ya taratibu za mazishi za kiongozi huyo mkuu wa nchi.

Mwanamke Ang'atwa Takoni na Bear Akijisaidia Chooni Alaska

Huko Alaska, Mwanamke ameng'atwa na mnyama aina ya Bear, akiwa anajisaidia kwenye choo cha shimo iliyokuwa nje ya nyumba alifikia. 

Bi Shannon Stevens anasema alienda kujisaidia chooni kwenye giza.  Alipokaa kwenye choo akasikia maumivu makali baada ya kung'atwa matakoni!  Alipiga kelele kuomba msaada.  Ndugu yake alirudi na tochi na kukuta bear yuko ndani ya shimo ya choo!  

Waliaamua kukimbilia mjini. Waliporudi asubuhi walikuta bear huyo kaondoka.  Bi Shannon hakuumia sana na madakatri wanasema atakuwa mzima,.

 ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — An Alaska woman had the scare of a lifetime when using an outhouse in the backcountry and she was attacked by a bear, from below.

“I got out there and sat down on the toilet and immediately something bit my butt right as I sat down,” Shannon Stevens told The Associated Press on Thursday. “I jumped up and I screamed when it happened.”

Stevens, her brother Erik and his girlfriend had taken snowmobiles into the wilderness Feb. 13 to stay at his yurt, located about 20 miles northwest of Haines, in southeast Alaska.

Her brother heard the screaming and went out to the outhouse, about 150 feet (45.72 meters) away from the yurt. There, he found Shannon tending to her wound. They at first thought she had been bitten by a squirrel or a mink, or something small.

Erik brought his headlamp with him to see what it was.

“I opened the toilet seat and there’s just a bear face just right there at the level of the toilet seat, just looking right back up through the hole, right at me,” he said.

“I just shut the lid as fast as I could. I said, ‘There’s a bear down there, we got to get out of here now,’” he said. “And we ran back to the yurt as fast as we could.”

Once safely back inside, they treated Shannon with a first aid kit. They determined it wasn’t that serious, but they would head to Haines if it worsened.

“It was bleeding, but it wasn’t super bad,” Shannon said.

The next morning, they found bear tracks all over the property, but the bear had left the area. “You could see them across the snow, coming up to the side of the outhouse,” she said.

They figure the bear got inside the outhouse through an opening at the bottom of the back door.

“I expect it’s probably not that bad of a little den in the winter,” Shannon said.

Alaska Department of Fish and Game Wildlife Management Biologist Carl Koch suspects it was a black bear based upon photos of the tracks he saw and the fact that a neighbor living about a half mile away sent him a photo of a black bear on her property two days later.

That homeowner yelled at the bear but it didn’t react. It also didn’t approach her but lumbered about its business, like it was in a walking hibernation mode.

Even though it’s winter, Koch said they get calls all year round about bears being out.

And 2020 was a record year for general bear problems in the Haines area. Reasons for that, he said, could include the fact it was a poor salmon run year combined with a mediocre berry crop. “It is also possible a bear couldn’t put on enough fat when they go in the den, that they might be out and about more often or earlier,” he said.

Koch suspects Shannon’s wound was caused by the bear swatting at her with a paw rather than being bitten. Either way, the location might be a first.

“As far as getting swatted on the butt when you’re sitting down in winter, she could be the only person on Earth that this has ever happened to, for all I know,” Koch said.

No matter the season, Erik says he’ll carry bear spray with him all the time when going into the backcountry, and Shannon plans to change one behavior as well.

“I’m just going to be better about looking inside the toilet before sitting down, for sure,” she
