Skandali ya BOT - Marekani watarudisha pesa zilizowekwa kwenye mabenki yao!

Makubwa!

Tangu 9/11 wamekuwa wakali hasa!

US ready to remit all looted funds

2008-01-29

US Ambassador Mark Green has said the United States will cooperate in tracing and remitting back to Tanzania any deposits in American banks which might have been siphoned through the misappropriation of the External Payments Account of the Bank of Tanzania.

Speaking to editors in Dar es Salaam yesterday Green said American laws compelled the tracing down of such funds, even if they had simply passed through an American bank. Green was responding to a question by this reporter about the possibility that some of the billions that had been embezzled at the BoT might be safely banked in Western countries, including the US, and if his government was prepared to facilitate the return of the looted funds to Tanzania.

He however said any such move depended on receiving a substantive request from the concerned state. BoT, under former governor Dr Daudi Ballali, occasioned multi-billion losses to the nation mostly through dubious payments and dealings with phony companies in 2005. President Jakaya Kikwete fired Ballali as BoT governor early this month and his position was taken by Prof. Benno Ndulu. Ballali was in USA undergoing treatment when the president sacked him. He has not returned yet.

Soon after his appointment was rescinded the US government revoked his visa saying his termination from work means he no longer represents the Tanzanian government and is thus not eligible for his current non-immigrant visa status.

Asked whether the US- now that it had cancelled Ballali`s visa-would proceed to extradite Ballali to Tanzania, Green said that the US fully supported President Jakaya Kikwete`s anti-corruption drive and was quite willing to work on any request that would enable the Tanzanian government to achieve that goal. He added that he was quite optimistic that President George Bush, during his upcoming visit to Tanzania, would make clear his stance in regard to corruption.

When the envoy was called upon to state categorically if Ballali was still in the US, and the precise location he was staying, Green said he did not know. He added that American laws did not allow him to make public any private information on a person`s whereabouts or location.

Responding to allegations made to the effect that former BoT governor Daudi Ballali was already an American citizen because he had acquired a Green Card, and that the revocation of his visa was therefore a blunt move, Ambassador Green said: ``What I know is that if somebody applies for a visa, then this person is not a citizen of that country.``
