KAPTENI Mkuu wa Ndege za Shirika la Ndege Tanzania (ATC), George Mazula (59) (PICHANI) amefariki dunia nyumbani kwake jijini Dar es Salaam kutokana na ugonjwa wa pumu.
Msemaji wa familia ya Mazula, Dk. Charles Lugora aliliambia HabariLeo jana msibani hapo kuwa Kapteni Mazula alifariki jana saa nne asubuhi baada ya kubanwa ghafla na ugonjwa unaodhaniwa kuwa ni pumu.Kwa mujibu wa msemaji huyo utaratibu wa mazishi ya rubani huyo utafahamika leo baada ya kikao cha familia kilichotazamiwa kufanyika jana saa moja usiku nyumbani kwake namba SGX 4617 K.
Marehemu ameacha mjane mmoja na watoto wawili walioko Marekani wanaotarajiwa kuja wakati wowote kuanzia leo ambao ni (Brian na George). Mtoto mwingine wa Mazula alifariki kwa kupigwa risasi yeye na mpenzi wake miaka miwili iliyopita nchini Marekani.

Murder case still unsolved, family puzzled
Sometimes the biggest questions are left unanswered, and some mysteries go unsolved. On Sept. 22, 2006, Walter Mazula and Bonetha Nkya, both from the African nation of Tanzania, in East Africa, were found dead on St. Aubin on Detroit’s east side.
Mazula’s body was in a field by an alley and Nkya’s was burned beyond recognition inside Mazula’s black Jeep Cherokee, a company car he was using. The two were talking about getting married on New Year’s Eve, like Mazula’s parents who still lived in Africa.
Walter Mazula wasn’t the type to get into any trouble. He didn’t deal drugs, or hang out with rough people, nor did his fiancé. That’s what has his family (and his employer) puzzled. This Saturday will be the one-year anniversary of the shooting and the police are still trying to figure out what happened.
It started when Mazula’s brothers, Brian and George, couldn’t reach him. This was out of the ordinary. His phone was always on. They talked every day. “We’re not really sure what happened. They could have been at the wrong place (at the wrong time).
Her car wasn’t working, so he was basically driving her around for the last two weeks before it happened,” George Mazula said. His brother’s cell phone was turned off, which was unusual, so he called Bonetha Nkya’s number.
He had heard that friends had tried calling her without luck. George made the phone call himself to see if what they said was true. “Bonetha?” he asked.
“This is my phone now,” a woman’s voice said.
“You’re saying it’s your phone, okay, no questions asked,” he said, trying to remain calm. He just wanted answers.
“Can you tell us where you got it? We don’t care about the phone, we just want to know how you got possession of it.”
“Someone gave it to me as a present,” she said, noncommittally. That was it. She hung up.
The family didn’t waste time. They filed a police report and waited for the gruesome answer to come. First Mazula’s body was found then Nkya’s, and the questions continued to mount.
Walter Mazula always showed up for work on time, stayed close to his fiancé and family.. “Walter would have said, ‘You can take whatever you want.’ He would have said, ‘Take my watch, take my wallet, just let us be, we’ll walk away, take the car,’” George Mazula said.
“He stayed calm. He was the kind of person to get you to get your head straight. That’s why we really can’t understand how it got to that point of someone deciding to do what they did.” He reasoned that there could not have been much of a motivation for killing them.
“From my point of view (it’s) people trying to make it out there doing their school thing, trying to stay on the right side of the law, it’s hard to explain, he was a role model to me,” George Mazula said of his brother.
“It could be your brother or your sister. This person is still out there. You can’t just leave somebody like that out on the streets.”
Jacqueline Mbwille, 31, a cousin of the Mazula family, can’t understand why the couple was targeted. “I don’t believe he had any enemies. He got along with everybody. They were really friendly people. I don’t know the motive of the person,” Mbwille said.
“Everybody is shocked, he was not a violent person, neither was she.” Mbwille and the Muzulas are asking for the community’s help in solving this case.
“If somebody knows something they should come out and tell. Let us know, so we can close this gap, close this chapter because it’s so hard,” Mbwille said, her voice cracking with emotion.
“Almost every day, every week, I always remember them. Sometimes I just…cry. I dream about them all the time. She was supposed to graduate in December (from Walsh College – he was doing his grad work at Walsh). What did they do wrong? They were quiet people.”
Detroit Police Officer Walter Wright couldn’t go on record about the case, as it is an ongoing investigation. “If anyone has any information, please contact the Detroit Police homicide department,” Wright said.

REST IN PEACE Captain Mazula. I flew on a flight to Harare with him. When he said this is Captain Mazula, people cheered! He was very popular.
Speaking of his popularity. Wadau naomba mnisaidie. Si ni yeye alikuwa anaendesha ile ndege iliyotekwa nyara kwenda Uingereza miaka ya 80? Moja wa marubani alipigwa risasi kwenye mguu kama sikosei.
Capt MAzula ni miongozni mwa Wazalendo halisi wa Nchi hii na atakumbukwa kwa ujasiri wake pale alipoirusha ndege ya E.A Airways na kuishusha Tanzania wakati Jumuiya ya A. Mashariki inavunjika. Tumempoteza Shujaa na Mzalendo halisi.

Oscar Mwamwaja pia alikuwa ni binamu wa kwanza wa Godfrey Mwakikagile upande wa baba yake (Godfrey), mmoja wa waandishi wa Tanzania, ambaye pia alisoma shule na George Mazula pale Tambaza High School.

I last spoke to George in May 2008 at the burial of Mama Mary Mackeja, he had a slight limp and we laughed about it. Aaah si unajua tena ndio uzee huu, inabidi tukubali tu! and he told me how he woke up one morning to find one of his legs had swollen. Bye to a dear friend.

Can't someone supoena the cell phone records? Not only that, since cell phone signals are bounced back from transmission towers, they can see the location of the cell phone at the time.
