Umeme: Mahojiano Ya BBC Na JK; Tafsiri Yangu

Ndugu zangu,

Kuna mengine yamenipita hapa kati. Leo nimesikiliza mahojiano ya mwandishi wa BBC na Rais Jakaya Kikwete kuhusu tatizo la upatikanaji wa umeme Tanzania.

Nimefuatilia pia maoni ya Watanzania mtandaoni juu ya majibu ya Kikwete. Tafsiri yangu; uongozi wa nchi ni kitu kigumu sana. Wengi wamemshambulia Kikwete kwa majibu yake kiasi wengine wamediriki kuandika; kuwa hatuna Rais.

Tunafanya makosa sana kutoa hukumu zenye kusukumwa na hisia hasi. Nimesikiliza mara mbili majibu ya Rais. Sikuona mahala pa kumshutumu Rais isipokuwa nimesikitishwa na maswali ya mwandishi wa BBC ambayo kwa Kikwete ilikuwa kama penalti alizokuwa akipigiwa mikononi na yeye kuzidaka huku akitabasamu.

Tusisahau, kuwa Kikwete ni mwanasiasa mahiri. Mwandishi anayekutana na Kikwete ni vema akajiandaa vilivyo juu ya namna ya kumbana Kikwete ndani ya majibu yake. Afanye hivyo ili kupata maswali mapya na hivyo basi habari mpya kutokana na majibu ya Rais.

Niseme tu, mahojiano yale ya Kikwete na BBC hayakutoa maswali mapya wala kuja na habari mpya. Na huo si udhaifu wa Kikwete bali mwandishi wa BBC aliyemhoji Kikwete.

Si tumemwona? Kikwete aliweza kucheza anavyotaka kwenye mahojiano yale. Na umahiri wake ulijidhihirisha pale alipogeuza sura ya mahojiano yale na Kikwete kuchukua nafasi ya mwandishi kwa kumbana mwandishi na husuan juu ya maarifa ya mwandishi katika eneo husika;

Wakati mwingine na nyinyi mjifunze hayo mambo ya kitaalamu kulikoni kuuliza tu hivi hivi. Unajua ungekuwa na wewe unauliza kwa hoja - unajua kwamba hiki kitu hiki ingekuwa umeme wa jua miezi miwili tu upo - tungeweza kufanya hivyo. Kikwete anamwambia mwandishi wa BBC.

Katika mahojiano yale Kikwete alikwenda na takwimu zake mfukoni. Kama moja ya mbinu katika sanaa ya mawasiliano ili kufikisha ujumbe, mara tatu ndani ya mahojiano yale Kikwete alizungumzia MW 600 zilizozalishwa tangu uhuru na MW 145 zilizozalishwa tangu 2009, na MW 160 zitakazozalishwa ifikapo Desemba mwaka huu. Jumla zitakuwa MW 305 tangu 2009. Na hapo ndipo kwenye hoja ya msingi ya Kikwete. Ana haki kuwashangaa wasioona jitihada zake.

Na Kikwete hakosi majibu ukimwuliza juu ya umeme wa jua, upepo na mvuke. Ana hoja anaposema kuwa umeme huo pia unahitaji mipango na kuwa huwezi kupata umeme wa jua kesho kwa vile jua linawaka.

Kama msikilizaji ningependa mwandishi ambane Kikwete kwenye maeneo ya ufisadi kwenye mikataba ikiwamo yenye kuhusiana na nishati ya umeme. Hakika, kama tungedhibiti ufisadi kwenye mikataba, basi, ni imani ya wengi kuwa tungejenga uwezo wa kuzalisha MW nyingi zaidi za umeme na kwa kasi kabisa, kulifanya tatizo la umeme kuwa ni historia. Tungeweza pia kupunguza gharama za mtumiaji wa umeme.

Tuna tatizo pia la baadhi ya wanasiasa kujiingiza katika kuwekeza kwenye eneo la nishati ya umeme. Wachague kati ya uongozi na uwekezaji. Kiongozi huwezi kuwa na hisa kwenye kampuni binafsi ya kuzalisha umeme na wakati huo huo ukalinda maslahi ya umma badala ya kampuni yako.

Vinginevyo, kwa waliokuwa na utayari wa kuelewa, mahojiano yale ya BBC na Kikwete yamempa nafasi Kikwete ya kujenga hoja ya msingi juu ya nini alichofanikiwa kufanya tangu aingie madarakani katika jitihada za kutatua tatizo la umeme nchini.

Kwamba watu anatuongoza hatutoi msaada kwake. Ninavyoelewa mimi ni kwamba kazi ya Rais sio kufikiri kwa niaba ya watu anaowaongoza. Kazi yake ni kusimamia mahitaji na matakwa ya watu anaowaongoza. Lakini kwa Tz ni tofauti. Kazi ya rais imekuwa ni kufikiri kwa niaba yetu.

Mwl. Nyerere wakati anadai uhuru, aliamini kuwa watanzania ni wanadamu wenye utashi. Akataifisha mali ya wageni na kuwakabidhi wazawa, akiamini tunaelewa kama yeye alivyokuwa. Akatukabidhi viwanda, mashamba, nk. Lakini badala ya kwenda mbele, vikafa. Akashangaa, allah! nilidhani hawa jamaa tu kitu kimoja, kumbe!, akaamua kung'atuka.

Mh. JK akaja na style tofauti. Akasema ngoja niwachokoze, maana siwaelewielewi!
Akaenda kutuombea vyandarua, akiamini kwamba tutalipuka na kusema, haiwezekani, yaani tuombewe vyandarua?! Alitegemea pia kwamba tunatambua kwamba hivyo vyandarua baada ya muda fulani, vitachanika na hivyo tutajiuliza swali, Je! aende kutuombea tena? Lakini cha ajabu, kimyaaa! wote kwa ujumla wetu! Sasa anajiuliza, atumie njia gani ya kutufikishia ujumbe kwamba alitutania/alituchokoza tu ili tuzinduke? Na HATUJAZINDUKA! TUMELALA USINGIZI MZITO! Hivi ni kweli tunafikiri kwamba vikichakaa ataenda tena kutuombea?

Mwanadamu ameumbwa kwa mfano wa Mungu na tumeumbwa tuvitawale viumbe vyote(kulingana na maandiko matakatifu). Je! sisi watz tumo? Kama tumo mbona mbu ametushinda? Utashi wetu uko wapi? Kama malaria ndio inaongoza kwa kuleta vifo hapa nchini, tunashindwa nini kumdhibiti mbu na uchafu?

Ukiangalia mbinu tunazotumia kukabiliana na maradhi, utashangaa kabisa! Kuna jamaa walijenga hospitali ya kipindupindu pale buguruni, ajabu! (sina uhakika, lakini inawezekana ni nchi ya kwanza dunia kukijengea kipindupindu ghala la kuhifadhia badala ya kukikomesha). Watanzania mpo!? Kweli mpo?!

Hivi ni kweli tunajisikiaje, kila rais wetu akikaa na marais wenzake, yeye ni kulia kila siku malaria inatumaliza. Si wanashangaa kwamba nchini kwake hana watu? Ni bahati mbaya wengi wetu huwa hatukai chini tukatafakari. JK amekuwa akiuliza maswali kadhaa ambayotungekuwa makini, yangetuumiza. Mojawapo aliwahi kusema, hivi wataalam tunaowapeleka nje ya nchi kusoma, huwa wanasoma nini? Kama ulishawahi kupelekwa nje ya nchi, jiulize ulienda kusomea nini? Kila mtu ajiulize! Baada ya kurudi amefanya nini? Inawezekana vya darasani hukuvielewa, vya kuona pia umesahau? Watu wa mazingira, mpo! wa afya nanyi mpo? manispaa Je!? wa fani nyingine nanyi mliona nini? mliumwa na mbu kule? mliumwa malaria kule? Kama hamkuumwa, mlijiliza ni kwa namna gani mkirudi mtatatua hilo tatizo? Au niwatanie kwamba wengi wetu tukirudi fikra zetu zinabaki kuwaota wazungu na kutamani kuwa kama wao wanavyoonekana na si wanavyotenda. Ndio maana sasa hivi ukitafuta mtu halisi unaweza kupata wakati mgumu.

Nywele kama wazungu! Rangi kama wazungu! Ni hayo tu ndio nayaona tumefanikiwa sana! Wenzetu walishajitambua thamani yao na ndio maana wakajipambanua na kujitofautisha na wanyama wengine kwa sababusi class ya wanyama wengine.

Tukichukua mfano, jiulize kwanini taka zimezagaa kila mahali hasa kwenye miji mikubwa. Taka za kuzagaa zinatakiwa zionekane zile tu zinazozalishwa na mijusi au viumbe visiyokuwa na akili. Wewe mwanadamu unatakiwa utumie akili yako na kuhakikisha kuwa taka unazozalisha huzitupi ovyo. Sasa angalia ambavyo hatutumii akili. Zile taka unaitupa ovyo ukidai huoni dustbin. Taka zile zinazagaa, zingine zinaanguka na kujaa kwenye mitalo. Mvua ikinyesha, maji machafu yanazagaa na kutuletea magonjwa. Tukienda hospital dawa hamna, tunalalamika. Lakini CHANZO CHA TATIZO NI WEWE MWENYEWE! Hapo ndipo wenzetu wanapotucheka, hawa jamaa vipi? utashi wao uko wapi?Ukiwaambia magari yote ya abiria yawe na dustbins, utaambiwa ooh! magari ya wakubwa. Sasa wakubwa si ndio hasa wanatakiwa watuonyeshe njia? Kuliwahi kutokea tangazo la tigo la jamaa kuachwa na gari wakati akichimba dawa, na watu hatukuona tatizo/udhalili wa lile tangazo. Hivi kweli walishindwa hata kusema jamaa akiachwa akimshangaa pundamilia!!!

Niliwahi kuongea na Mh. mmoja kwamba wajitahidi kuwaelimisha watu na kusimamia taratibu zilizowekwa kwa kuwa sasa hivi tuna vituo vingi vya TV na radio, akaniambia ni gharama! Nikashangaa! Tangu lini elimu ikawa rahisi? Au kwa sababu tulisoma bure?Basi tujaribuni ujinga kwa kuwa elimu ni gharama!!!



Tufike mahali tujitambue thamani yetu na kusema tumechoshwa na kunyanyaswa na magonjwa badala ya kila siku tukiumwa, tunakimbilia hospitali bila kujiuliza kwanini tunaumwa. Kauli mbiu ya miaka 50 ya uhuru, kwamba tumethubutu, tumeweza, sijui nini! Huwa najiuliza, tumeweza katika sekta ipi? Vitu vya wachina kujaa madukani ndio kuweza? Used cars za wajapan zilizojaa barabrani ndio kuweza? Elimu down, umaskini juu, magonjwa juu, uchafu juu, vifo juu, michezo down, viwanda down, njaa juu, tumeweza wapi? Kama tumeshindwa hata kufagia, tunaweza nini? Kama unashika ganda la muwa au chungwa na ukalitupa tu ovyo, unaweza nini? Utashi wako uko wapi? Tumelogwa, au ni pepo!?

Kwa mtazamo wangu, badala ya kusema tumeweza, tulipaswa kusema tumetambua tulipoangukia, sasa tunasimama na kuanza hatua ya kwanza. Jamani tutokomeze maradhi kwa kuweka mazingira safi. Kila mtu ajione ni mjinga pale anapotupa taka iwe ni dirishani mwa gari, iwe ni kwenye mtalo, iwe ni kukojoa ovyo, nk. Bila kujitambua sisi wenyewe na kuacha tabia za uchafu kwa mtu mmoja mmoja, magonjwa yataendelea kututesa daima na juhudi zinazofanywa na mamlaka za kufanya usafi kila Jumamosi ya mwanzo wa mwezi hazitaweza kufanikiwa kwa kuwa unaweza ukafagia sasa na mimi nikatupa uchafu dakika 2 zijazo na kufanya usafi uliofanya ukawa bure. Tuwe tunathubutu kuwakumbusha wenzetu pale tunapoona wanakwenda kinyume.

Tatizo kubwa ninaloliona ni kwamba tunaogopa kuthubutu. Kwa mfano jiji la Dar, utaambiwa ni jiji kubwa hivyo ni vigumu. Mimi naona ni rahisi sana. Hivi tukiwachukua wale vijana wanaopiga debe, tuwakawapa vitambulisho na kuwakabidhi hilo jukumu la kuwawajibisha watu, unadhani watashindwa? Cha muhimu ni kuwajulisha wahusika kwamba hao vijana watakuwepo mtaani kwa ajili ya kazi hiyo na kila mtu ajue hivyo. Baada ya hapo ni utekelezaji.Nadhani hawawezi kushindwa.Wanachohitaji ni kibali tu na waambiwe wakimkamata wachukue kiasi gani kwa huyo mtu na akibisha wampeleke wapi.

Milupuko na Mauaji Norway!

Wadau, watu 91 walikufa nchini Norway jana baada ya majengo ya serikali kulipuliwa na bomu mjini Oslo halafu vijana waliokuwa kwenye kambi kwenye kisiwa kuuwawa na mtu aliyejifanya polisi. Habari zinasikitisha. Kwa kweli nani alitegemea kusikia habari kama hizi kutoka nchi kama Norway. Mtu mmoja ndiye aliyefanya huo ushenzi, polisi wamemtambua kama Anders Behring Breivik (32) raia wa Norway. Habari zinasema ni Mkristo mwenye Itikadi kali (yaani Christian fundamentalist). Mungu alaze roho za waliokufa mahala pema mbinguni. AMEN.

Oslo, Norway (CNN) -- A young man who survived a gunman's rampage on Norway's Utoya island says he is alive because he played dead, grabbing on to bodies around him, an account that came as authorities on Saturday raised the death toll from the attack a day earlier to 84.

Adrian Pracon's account provided the clearest detail to date of Friday's shooting attack at the ruling Labour Party's youth camp that police said left at least 84 dead people. The attack came shortly after an explosion in the Norwegian capital of Olso that killed seven people, raising the combined death toll in both attacks to 91.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A group of Minneapolis-area Somalis, including some who traveled to their homeland to allegedly take up arms against the Ethiopian army, held secret meetings in 2007 to plan the trips, created fake itineraries to fool family members and challenged one another about their commitment, prosecutors contend in a court filing.

The document was filed this week in advance of a trial for one man accused of being part of the conspiracy.

It sheds new light on how the recruiting operation worked in Minneapolis and how some of the men arrived at safehouses in Somalia, where they received AK-47s and weapons training.

Since the fall of 2007, at least 21 men have left Minnesota for Somalia, where authorities believe they joined the terror group al-Shabab. Eighteen people have been charged in Minnesota in connection with the case, including Omer Abdi Mohamed, who goes on trial next week on terror-related charges.

Mohamed never traveled to Somalia, but he is accused of helping others who did. His attorney calls the allegations ridiculous.

"Omer was never involved in terrorism," said defense attorney Peter Wold. "It certainly stirs the public sentiment to suggest that, but it is not part of this case, not a part of Omer, and that will be abundantly clear."

Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew a socialist dictator and then turned on each other, causing chaos in the African nation of about 7 million people.

In 2006, Ethiopian soldiers, which many Somalis viewed as abusive, occupied parts of Somalia and a militant group called al-Shabab fought against against them. The U.S. declared al-Shabab a terrorist organization in early 2008.

According to prosecutors, starting in September 2007, Mohamed and others conspired to raise money to send men to Somalia to violently oust the Ethiopians. Others were also recruited to the cause. The group held meetings at mosques and restaurants, and took measures to keep things secretive.

"The defendant and his conspirators strove to keep the plan secret, reminding members not to discuss it with anyone outside of the conspiracy, and policing entry into the group," prosecutors said.

Mohamed and others went to malls and apartments, falsely telling members of the Somali community they were raising money to build a mosque or help relief efforts in Somalia, prosecutors said. The money actually went to the travelers, who planned to join one group member's relative - a senior member of al-Shabab - in Somalia.

Prosecutors said Mohamed used a contact at a local travel agency to get airline tickets. Members of the group allegedly gave one traveler a false itinerary to mislead his family.

The group also kept two recruits from leaving Minnesota in the fall of 2007 because they were too young, and decided their disappearance would draw attention to the plan, the document said.

The document said Mohamed and another man stayed behind to provide financial support to the travelers. It also says Mohamed advised his coconspirators to listen to a lecture by radical Muslim leader Anwar al-Awlaki about the path to jihad, and that at least one person did.

"They challenged members of the conspiracy who had planned to travel, questioning their commitment, dedication, and knowledge of both the religion and events in Somalia, before ultimately assisting them with the trip," the document said.

Prosecutors said the conspiracy includes men in Minneapolis, and men and women in Somalia. In Minneapolis, the conspiracy focused on traveling and funding trips and in Somalia, it focused on the use of safe-houses and weapons training, prosecutors said.

The document said some of the men went to Somalia through Saudi Arabia or through Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and eventually met each other and went to safe-houses. Some Minneapolis men helped clear brush for a training camp, and some participated in a July 2008 ambush of Ethiopian troops along a road in Somalia - the preparations and the ambush were filmed as part of a propaganda video.

Prosecutors say in that video, a man from Minneapolis encourages more men to join the fighters in Somalia.
Mohamed's trial starts on Tuesday with jury selection.

Nimepokea habari hizi za kusikitisha kuhusu kifo cha Waiyaki Joel Njoroge (24) ambaye ni mtoto wa Mchungaji Dr. Joe Njoroge na mke wake Wambui. Wazazi wake wanakaa Atlanta, Georgia, lakini mtoto alikuwa anasoma na kufanya kazi Los Angeles. Wanasema kuwa jumamosi uliopita walikuwa na party kwenye fleti aliyekuwa anakaa na vijana wengine. Asubuhi kijana hakuamka, alipelekwa hospitalini na huko walithibitisha kuwa kijana kaaga dunia. Kifo chake ni pigo kuwa sana kwa familia ya Njoroge, alikuwa mtoto wa kiume pekee wa Pastor Njoroge.

Poleni sana wanafamilia. Mungu ailaze roho yake mahala pema mbinguni. Amen.

LOS ANGELES, CA_ Waiyaki Joel Njoroge, the son of a renowned Kenyan Scholar and pastor, Rev. Dr. Joe Njoroge and Rev. Wambui Njoroge of Tifton Georgia, has passed at a young age of 24.

According to news reaching Ajabu Africa, the younger Njoroge passed away last Saturday morning in Los Angeles, CA in an apartment they shared with roommates.

Sources said that after spending a social night in their apartment on Friday, friends and room mates found the late Njoroge unresponsive in his bed on early Saturday morning upon which they immidiately alerted emergency crews.

However, as the emergency crews shortly arrived and administered first aid on the late Njoroge, he still appread unrespponsive and was declared dead on arrival at a hospital.

The cause of the death was not immidiately clear.

The late Njoroge was the elder brother to Anne Wanjiru Njoroge.

Family sources said that the body of the late Njoroge is still lying at the Los Angeles County Morgue awaiting travel plans for burial in Tifton, Georgia where the family resides.

The death has shocked family and friends across the US.

Well known in the Kenyan Diaspora community, the young Njoroge’s father, Dr. Joe Njoroge is a former national President of Kenya Christian Fellowship in America (KCFA) who for 8 years, played a crucial role in building KCFA to the large organization it currently is.

Under Dr. Njoroge’s watch, KCFA grew to encompass twenty two local chapters that span the continental U.S., and one chapter in Canada .Attendance to the KCFA’s annual conference also increased from about 120 to more than 1,000 Kenyans and friends during his watch.

He has been a common fixture at community events all over the USA. The cleric has also attended many events in New England either preaching the word of God or taking part in various social events including weddings.

Last summer while in Boston, Dr. Njoroge and his wife, Rev. Wambui Njoroge were both awarded an Ajabu African Award in recognition of their contribution to the Body of Christ and the Kenyan Community in Diaspora.

Later in the fall of 2010, the couple also attended a book launching ceremony for the first ever bible question and answer book by a Kenyan pastor, Rev. Ben Njuru of the Gospel Power Center in Worcester Mass.

Early this year, Dr. Njoroge and his wife were back to Boston again to conduct a couple's seminar at the Christ is the Answer Church in North Chelmsford.

Currently, Dr. Njoroge is the Chairman of the KCFA Board of Trustees and his wife, Rev. Wambui Njoroge is the Director of the KCFA Women Ministry.

Dr. Njoroge is also Chair of the Department of History & Political Science, and a Professor of Political Science & Religion at Abraham Baldwin State College, a division of the University System of Georgia .

“We are totally shocked by the death of Dr. Njoroge’s only son. It’s very painful”, said Pastor Jackson Kingori of NEEMA Gospel Church, Richardson, TX.

“All we can do right now is support the family of Dr. Njoroge and his wife who have been very instrumental in the Kenyan Community in the USA. Let us support them with funds and prayers now that they need our support”, he added while speaking to Ajabu Africa on a telephone interview.

Pastor Kingori added that the cause of the death has not yet been disclosed by the medical examiner and that Dr. Njoroge and his wife arrived in Los Angeles yesterday to get details.

Speaking to Ajabu Africa, Pastor John Wachira of the Christ is the Answer church based in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts, said that it was the death of Pastor Njoroge's son was very saddening.

He said that several pastors have met in Lowell and have planned to send a small party to Georgia to lend support and attend the funeral.

"Dr. Njoroge and his wife are our friends and are people of God. Right now we have to pray for them and encourage them go through this difficult time", said Pastor Wachira.

A prayer service and burial fundraiser has been scheduled to take place this Thursday July 14th at 7pm at the Believers Cerebration Centre located at 1492 Roswell Road, Marietta GA. 30062.

A funeral organizing committee hurriedly convened to coordinate the burial has also scheduled a Memorial Service to take place this Friday July 15th at 7pm at The Kenya American Community Church (KACC), 771 Elberta Drive, Marietta Georgia, 30066.

A final Funeral Service will be held on Saturday July 16th, 2011 at 1:00pm at the Albritton Beaumont Funeral Home 10020 North Tift Avenue, Tifton, GA 31794

LONDON (Reuters) - Scientists have found a "superbug" strain of gonorrhea in Japan that is resistant to all recommended antibiotics and say it could transform a once easily treatable infection into a global public health threat.

The new strain of the sexually transmitted disease -- called H041 -- cannot be killed by any currently recommended treatments for gonorrhea, leaving doctors with no other option than to try medicines so far untested against the disease.

Magnus Unemo of the Swedish Reference Laboratory for Pathogenic Neisseria, who discovered the strain with colleagues from Japan in samples from Kyoto, described it as both "alarming" and "predictable."

"Since antibiotics became the standard treatment for gonorrhea in the 1940s, this bacterium has shown a remarkable capacity to develop resistance mechanisms to all drugs introduced to control it," he said.

South Sudan

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) - South Sudan raised the flag of its new nation for the first time Saturday, as thousands of South Sudanese citizens and dozens of international dignitaries swarmed the new country capital of Juba to celebrate the country's birth.

South Sudan became the world's newest country Saturday with a raucous street party at midnight. At a packed midday ceremony, the speaker of parliament read a proclamation of independence as the flag of Sudan was lowered and the flag of South Sudan was raised, sparking wild cheers from a crowd tens of thousands strong.

"Hallelujah!" one resident yelled, as other onlookers wiped away tears.

The U.S. and Britain announced their recognition of South Sudan as a sovereign nation. President Barack Obama said the day was a reminder that "after the darkness of war, the light of a new dawn is possible."

"A proud flag flies over Juba and the map of the world has been redrawn," Obama said in a statement. "These symbols speak to the blood that has been spilled, the tears that have been shed, the ballots that have been cast, and the hopes that have been realized by so many millions of people."

The noon-hour ceremony hosted by Salva Kiir, who was sworn in as South Sudan's president, took place under a blazing hot sun. Sudan President Omar al-Bashir, a deeply unpopular man in Juba, arrived to a mixture of boos and surprised murmurs.

"Wow, this is a great day for me because it's a day that reflects the suffering that all southerners have had for almost 50 years," said David Aleu, a 24-year-old medical student.

Thousands of South Sudan residents thronged the celebration area, and organizers soon learned they did not have enough seats for all the visiting heads of state and other VIPs. The heat was strong enough that Red Cross workers attended to many people who fainted.

Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. and the American envoy at Saturday's celebration, urged South Sudan residents and leaders to build a country worthy of the sacrifice of all the lives lost during the five decades of conflict.

"Independence was not a gift you were given. Independence is a prize you have won," she said. "Yet even on this day of jubilee we remain mindful of the challenges that await us. No true friend would offer false comfort. The path ahead will be steep... but the Republic of South Sudan is being born amid great hopes."

The black African tribes of South Sudan and the mainly Arab north battled two civil wars over more than five decades, and some 2 million died in the latest war, from 1983-2005. It culminated in a 2005 peace deal that led to Saturday's independence declaration.

Thousands of South Sudanese poured into the ceremonial arena when gates opened. Traditional dancers drummed in the streets as residents waved tiny flags. Activists from the western Sudan region of Darfur, which has suffered heavy violence the past decades, held up a sign that said "Bashir is wanted dead or alive." Bashir has been indicted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Darfur.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon pointedly noted in his speech that Sudan and South Sudan have not yet resolved all of their political issues. The status of the contentious border region of Abyei - where northern and southern troops are standing off - remains in flux. South Kordofan, which is a part of the north but which has many southern supporters, has seen heavy fighting in recent weeks.

"Let their differences be resolved around the negotiating table," Ban said.
South Sudan is expected to become the 193rd country recognized by the United Nations next week and the 54th U.N. member state in Africa.

Though Saturday is a day of celebration, residents of South Sudan must soon face many challenges. Their country is oil-rich but is one of the poorest and least-developed on Earth. Unresolved problems between the south and its former foe to the north could mean new conflict along the new international border, advocates and diplomats warn.

Violence has broken out in the contested border region of Abyei in recent weeks, and fighting is ongoing in Southern Kordofan, a state that lies in Sudan - not South Sudan - but which has many residents loyal to the south. The 1,300-mile (2,100-kilometer) north-south border is disputed in five areas, several of which are being illegally occupied by either northern or southern troops.
Obama said that South Sudan and Sudan must recognize that they will be more secure and prosperous if they move beyond past differences peacefully. He said the 2005 peace deal - the Comprehensive Peace Agreement - must be full implemented and the status of Abyei resolved.
The young government faces the huge challenge of reforming its bloated and often predatory army, diversifying its oil-based economy, and deciding how political power will be distributed among the dozens of ethnic and military factions. It must also begin delivering basic needs such as education, health services, water and electricity to its more than 8 million citizens.

While South Sudan is now expected to control of more than 75 percent of what was Sudan's daily oil production, it has no refineries and southern oil must flow through the north's pipelines to reach market.

But for Saturday, at least, those problems lay on the back burner. Smiles, singing and dancing instead took precedence.

Adut Monica Joseph waited for the ceremony with her sister and uncle as world leaders arrived. She said she looked forward to a day when women in South Sudan don't face the hardships they have in recent decades. The risk to the mother of death during child birth is extremely high in the poor and underdeveloped rural south.

"I'm very grateful to see many people from other countries," said the 22-year-old. "I'm appreciating that they have come to celebrate with us. I hope when we have independence we shall have freedom and education for women."

Kumbukumbu - Siti Binti Saad (1880-1950)



Wadau, leo ni miaka 61 tangu mwimbaji maarufu Siti Binti Saad afariki dunia. Siti alikuwa mwimbaji wa kwanza kutoka Afrika Mashariki kwenda India kutengeneza santuri. Alichangia sana fani ya taarab hasa kwa kuimba kwa kiswahili.

Siti binti Saad alizaliwa katika kijiji cha Fumba, Zanzibar mwaka 1880. Alipozaliwa alipewa jina la 'Mtumwa' hii ni kwa vile alizaliwa katika kipindi caha utumwa wa Kiarabu Jina la Siti alipewa na mkabaila mmoja wa kiarabu.Baba yake bwana Saadi alikuwa ni Mnyamwezi kutoka Tabora na mama yake alikuwa ni Mzigua toka Tanga, lakini wote wawili walizaliwa Zanzibari.

Hali ya maisha ya familia yao ilikuwa ni duni sana na walijishughulisha zaidi katika shughuli za kilimo na ufinyanzi kazi ambazo Siti alijifunza na kuzimudu vizuri pia.Kama waswahili wasemavyo 'kuzaliwa masikini si kufa masikini' Siti alibarikiwa kuwa na kipaji cha pekee cha uimbaji. Kipaji hiki kilimsaidia sana tangu siku za awali za maisha yake kwani alitumia uimbaji wake kuuza vyungu vya mama yake alivyokuwa akimsaidia kuvitembeza.

Siti alipoimba sauti yake iliweza kupaa na kusafiri kwa umbali wa maili nyingi na hii ndio ilikuwa ishara ya watu kujua kwamba vyungu vya kina Mtumwa vinapita leo. Alifananishwa kuwa na mapafu yenye nguvu kama ya Simba kutokana na alivyoweza kupaza sauti yake mbali na bila kuachia pumzi.Kutokana na wakati huo elimu kwa watoto wa kike kutotiliwa mkazo, Siti hakuwahi kwenda shule wala kuhudhuria mafunzo ya Kurani. Hivyo mnamo mwaka 1911 aliona ni bora ahamie mjini ili kubooresha maisha yake zaidi.

Ujio wake wa mjini ulikuwa wa neema kwani alikutana na bwana mmoja wa kundi la muziki wa Taarabu la "Nadi Ikhwani Safaa" aliyeitwa Muhsin Ali. Katika kipindi hicho hilo ndilo lilikuwa kundi pekee la muziki wa taarabu lililoanzishwa na Sultani mpenda starehe na anasa bwana Seyyid Barghash Said. Kundi hili lilikuwa ni la wanaume peke yake , wanawake hawakuruhusiwa kujiunga na vikundi vya muziki kwa vile ilikuwa ikichukuliwa kama ni uhuni. Bwana Muhsin alikiona kipaji cha pekee cha Siti na hivyo akajitolea kumfundisha kuimba kwa kufuata vyombo vya muziki na lugha ya kiarabu. Baada ya hapo alikwenda kumtambulisha kwa wanamuziki wenzie wa "Nadi Ikhwani Safaa" ambao bila kusita wakaanza kufanya naye maonyesho mbalimbali katika jamii.

Walipata mialiko mingi hasa kutoka kwa Sultani na matajiri wengine wa Kiarabu, pia katika maharusi na sherehe zingine mbalimbali, inasemekana ulifika wakati ambapo sherehe ilishindwa kufana kama Siti binti Saadi hakuwepo kutumbuiza. Siti alikuwa ni moto wa kuotea mbali na jina lake lilivuma kwa haraka sana hadi nje ya mipaka ya nchi na bara la Afrika. Na punde Siti alianza kufananishwa na 'Umm Kulthum', mwimbaji mahiri wa kike aliyetamba wakati huo kutoka Misri.Kama nilivyosema moto wa Siti ulikuwa si wa kuusogelea karibu, mwaka 1928 kampuni ya kurekodi muziki ya Columbia and His Master's voice yenye makazi yake Mumbai India ilisikia umaarufu wa Siti binti Saadi na hivyo ikamwalika yeye pamoja na kundi lake kwenda kurekodi kwa lugha ya Kiswahili ili kujaribu kama muziki wake utauzika.

Kampuni ile haikuweza kuamini jinsi muziki ule ulivyouzika kwa kasi kubwa kwani wastani wa santuri 900 ziliweza kuuzika katika kipindi cha miaka miwili ya mwanzo, na hadi kufikia 1931 santuri 72,000 zilikuwa zimeuzwa. Kutokana na kusambaa kwa santuri hizi, umaarufu wa Siti ulizidi mara dufu watu kutoka sehemu mbalimbali za dunia walikuwa wakija Zanzibari kuja kumwona. Mambo yalizidi kuwa mazuri kwa Siti hadi ikafikia hatua kampuni ya kurekodi ya Columbia kuamua kujenga studio ya kurekodi muziki palepale Zanzibar maalumu kwa ajili ya Siti binti Saadi.Hatua hiyo ya hadi kujengewa studio iliwaumiza wengi wenye wivu, hivyo wakaanza kumtungia nyimbo za kumkejeli ili kumshusha na hasa walitumia kigezo kwamba hana uzuri wa sura, nyimbo nyingi ziliimbwa lakini huu ndio uliovuma sana:-

Siti binti Saadi kawa mtu lini,
Kaja mjini na kaniki chini,
Kama si sauti angekula nini?
Na yeye kwa kujua hila za wabaya wake, akaona isiwe taabu akajibu shambulio namna hii:

-Si hoja uzuri,
Na sura jamali,
Kuwa mtukufu,
Na jadi kebeli,
Hasara ya mtu,
Kukosa akili.

Kwa kujibu shambulio hilo kwa namna yake aliwafunga midomo wale wote waliokuwa wakifumatafuata. Siti pia alikuwa ni mwanamke wa kwanza mwanaharakati katika kipindi chake, alitetea wanawake na wanyonge kwa ujumla, kwani katika kipindi chake watu matajiri walikuwa wakiwaonea masikini na walipofikishwa mbele ya haki waliweza kutoa hongo na kuachiwa huru halafu wewe uliyeshitaki ndiye unayefungwa.

Utunzi wake wa wimbo wa Kijiti ulimpatia sifa kubwa kwani ulikuwa ukielezea kisa cha kweli kilichomkuta mwanamke mmoja mgeni kutoka bara, mwanamke huyu alipofika alikutana na Tajiri mmoja ambaye alijifanya amempenda, hivyo akamchukua na kulala naye halafu baadaye akamuua. Tajiri yule alishitakiwa na bahati nzuri walikuwepo mashahidi wawili walioshuhudia tukio lile, lakini kwa vile ni Tajiri alitoa pesa na kesi ikawageukia wale mashahidi na kufungwa.

Siti aliendelea kumwambia katika nyimbo zake kwamba asijethubutu kwenda Dar es Salaam kwa maana watu wenye hasira wanamsubiri na wameapa kwa ajili yake.Siti aliendelea na shughuli yake ya muziki hadi uzeeni, muda mfupi kabla ya kifo chake alikutana na mwandishi maarufu na mwanamashairi Shaban Robert ambaye alimhoji na kuweza kuandika wasifu wake katika kitabu alichokiita " Wasifu wa Siti binti Saadi." Wasifu huu unaonekana kuwa ndio bora zaidi uliowahi kuandikwa katika fasihi ya Tanzania. Kitabu hiki kinatumika kufundishia shule za sekondari za Tanzania.Tarehe 8 Julai, 1950 Siti binti Saadi alifariki dunia na kuacha pengo kubwa katika fani ya Taarabu.

Ingawa pengo hilo haliwezi kuzibika lakini kuna watu wengi walioweza kuibuka na umaarufu wa kuimba taarabu kupitia kwake, mfano hai ni Bi Kidude.Hata baada ya kifo chake jina lake bado linatumika sana kama kielelezo cha ushujaa wake, Chama cha waandishi wa habari wanawake Tanzania (TAMWA), kimetumia jina lake kulipa jina gazeti la chama chao "Sauti ya Siti". Hadi leo hii Siti hutumika kama kipimo cha kufundishia uimbaji wa Taarabu. Na anakumbukwa katika historia yake ya kuwa mwanamke wa kwanza Afrika mashariki kurekodi muziki katika santuri.

Kwa muda mrefu eneo la shughuli za biashara ambalo limekuwa likiombwa na machinga limekuwa ni makoroboi, na eneo hili ndilo ambalo limekuwa na msikiti na shule za WAASIA toka miaka ya 1970, wakati wakipewa eneo la makoroboi na mkuu wa mkoa Abass Kandoro kurejea katikati ya jiji walipewa kwa sharti la kutovuka shule na msikiti wa waasia hao, walivuka na leo walikuwa wakiondolewa eneo hilo tu la shule waliozidi na ndipi vulugu zikazuka.
Hata hivyo kuzuka kwa vulugu hizo kumekuwa sababu ya wao kushambulia mali za WAASIA, magari, misikiti hiyo Mtaa wa Makoroboi, Maduka hii ni kutokana na dhana kuwa wao wamekuwa wakibughuziwa na wafanyabiashara wa kiasia kuoachwa wakifaidi nchi hii.
Huku wakidai kuwa kuna taarifa kuwa wao wamekuwa wakilipia posho za Polisi kwa lengo la kuwaondoa MAchinga eneo la makoroboi kila kunapokuwa na Oparesheni za kuwaondoa hivyo kujenga chuki nao.

F.O.M.O - Ugonjwa wa Kupenda Simu ya Mkononi

Wadau, madaktari wamegundua ugonjwa mpya, F.O.M.O. (Fear of Missing Out), yaani ugonjwa wa kuogopa utakosa ujumbe, au habari kwenye simu ya mkononi, Blackberrry. Mimi ninayo! Yaani, nikiamka hata sijatoka kitandani natazama blackberry! Hata nusu saa haipiti bila kuitazama! Loh!

BOSTON -- Across the country, you see it everywhere. People are constantly checking their smartphones to see if they have new texts, tweets or Facebook updates.

"The first thing I do when I wake up is like many people is look at my BlackBerry to see what's going on on Facebook and Twitter," Judith Forman said.

During the day, Forman is constantly on the computer for her work as a public awareness manager for Reach Out and Read, a Boston charity. Or she's on her BlackBerry connecting with her 1,200 Facebook friends.

"Basically the only time I'm not with my phone I would say is when I'm sleeping," Forman said. "And it's become a bit of a joke with some of my friends."

Forman may have what's being called a FOMO addiction which stands for "Fear of Missing Out."

She's not alone.

Sitting at Back Bay station, Nikki Yeager admits she's on her BlackBerry constantly.

"I do have FOMO," Yeager said. "I'm a FOMO sufferer."

Chemi Kadete says she checks her BlackBerry 20 times a day.

"Now I'm even walking crossing the street looking at this," Kadete said. "It's getting dangerous. I have to admit it."

Newburyport pyschologist Dr. John Grohol believes FOMO isn't healthy.

"You can get into a negative reinforcing way of spending your life," Grohol said. "Looking at all the things you could be doing instead of just enjoying what it is your doing in the moment."

If you're concerned about your smartphone use, Grohol suggest taking stock of exactly how much time you're spending online.

"You're not spending 5 or 10 minutes a day," Grohol said. "You might find out you're spending an hour a day or two hours a day. We only have 24. Is that really how you want to look back on your life?"

He suggests you try this experiment with your smartphone.

"Turn it off. Just turn it off for the evening," Grohol said. "Be with the person that you've chosen to be with. That allows you to be in the moment."

If you can't turn it off and feel overwhelming anxiety, Grohol said you may need professional help.
