Swearing Makes Pain More Tolerable

Sun Jul 12, 10:10 am ET

That muttered curse word that reflexively comes out when you stub your toe could actually make it easier to bear the throbbing pain, a new study suggests.

Swearing is a common response to pain, but no previous research has connected the uttering of an expletive to the actual physical experience of pain.

"Swearing has been around for centuries and is an almost universal human linguistic phenomenon," said Richard Stephens of Keele University in England and one of the authors of the new study. "It taps into emotional brain centers and appears to arise in the right brain, whereas most language production occurs in the left cerebral hemisphere of the brain."
Stephens and his fellow Keele researchers John Atkins and Andrew Kingston sought to test how swearing would affect an individual's tolerance to pain. Because swearing often has an exaggerating effect that can overstate the severity of pain, the team thought that swearing would lessen a person's tolerance.

As it turned out, the opposite seems to be true.

The researchers enlisted 64 undergraduate volunteers and had them submerge their hand in a tub of ice water for as long as possible while repeating a swear word of their choice. The experiment was then repeated with the volunteer repeating a more common word that they would use to describe a table.

Contrary to what the researcher expected, the volunteers kept their hands submerged longer while repeating the swear word.

The researchers think that the increase in pain tolerance occurs because swearing triggers the body's natural "fight-or-flight" response. Stephens and his colleagues suggest that swearing may increase aggression (seen in accelerated heart rates), which downplays weakness to appear stronger or more macho.

"Our research shows one potential reason why swearing developed and why it persists," Stephens said.

The results of the study are detailed in the Aug. 5 issue of the journal NeuroReport.

Wote wamewekwa ndani ka dhamana kubwa $250,000 kila moja. Wakihukumiwa wanaweza kufungwa miaka sita hadi 30. Naona kila moja atafungwa miaka 30! Huo ni ushenzi wa hali ya juu.
Polisi wanasema wamekuta mifupa ya wafu wakiwemo watoto wadogo kabisa zimezagaa sehemu mbalimbali huko makaburini. Markers/Headstones (misalaba) zimepondwa na kutupwa pia. Wanasema walivyokuwa anafukua makaburi hawakujali kitu, wanachukua bulldoza na kuchimba na kutupa walichopata sehemu yoyote enye nafasi! Rev. Jesse Jackson anasema nafasi zinawangojea hao wanne huko motoni!

First A/H1N1 flu case confirmed in Tanzania

2009-07-09

DAR ES SALAAM, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The first A/H1N1 flu case confirmed in Tanzania was a British student who was hospitalized earlier this month, Tanzanian medical official told Xinhua on Thursday.

The male teenager was among a group of students and teachers who flew into the east African country from Britain via Kenya several days ago to carry out volunteer work, Andrew Swai, director of clinical services at the country's main referral hospital Muhimbili National Hospital, said to Xinhua on phone.

"He is well now, not infectious, and will be out of hospital tomorrow," Swai noted, adding that earlier diagnostic test showed the victim was positive for A/H1N1.

Preparations for the epidemic have already started in Tanzania, while the Ministry for Livestock Development and Fisheries is working closely with health, tourism, home affairs and infrastructure ministries to monitor the flu, according to government officials.

Before Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia in east Africa had already confirmed their first A/H1N1 cases in recent days.

So far, A/H1N1 flu has infected more than 94,000 people in the world, including 429 deaths, according to the World Health Organization.

*************************************

Arusha, Tanzania - Tanzania's deputy minister of health says a visiting British student has been confirmed as the country's first case of swine flu.

The east African nation is the fourth African country to report a confirmed case of the H1N1 virus.

Deputy Minister Dr Aisha Kigoda said Thursday the student arrived in the commercial capital of Dar es Salaam a week ago as part of a group of volunteer students. The student told immigration officials he felt unwell and was sent to hospital immediately.

Kigoda says Tanzania has contingency plans in place to contain the virus.

The World Health Organisation has confirmed 429 deaths from the virus worldwide and nearly 95 000 infections since it was first reported in Mexico in March. - Sapa-AP

Halleluya!

Patients suffering from kidney failure are likely to get improved services in the country after a dialysis unit at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam becomes operational during this financial year as the government has set aside 250m/- for the purpose.

Currently the government has only one diagnostic machine in its hospitals in the country, forcing most patients to look for treatment for kidney or liver complications in private hospitals or be flown abroad for treatment.

Community Development, Gender and Children, Lucy Nkya told legislators here that a new machine had been brought and the government was in the process of installing it.

The Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam was one of a few private hospitals in the country which had dialysis units while Mbeya Referral Hospital was the only government hospital which had the service.

“Since the machine is in the country, dialysis sessions will start in the near future.

The government looks forward to achieving this great step in the provision of services to the people and the improvement of the quality of life in Tanzania,” Nkya said.

She said renovation of rooms in which the unit would be installed had been done, seven of the machines had been installed while one was on standby. Nkya added that two specialist doctors have been employed to work in the unit.

She said kidney failure led to non-purification of urea and blood cleansing, adding that dialysis treatment enhanced the kidneys’ functions and could replace them altogether.

The deputy minister said kidney failure was a latent disease as it could take years before a patient recognised any of the symptoms.

Symptoms include swellings below the eyelids, nausea and weight loss, while high amounts of urea in the blood can only be detected through laboratory testing, she said.

Nkya was responding to a question by Mussa Azzan Zungu (Ilala, CCM) who sought government explanation why the machine at MNH was not working, forcing patients to seek treatment in private hospitals which charge a lot of money.

'MPs want a new National Service Modus Operandi

By Lusekelo Philemon
7th July 2009

Members of Parliament said yesterday the National Service could confidently face up to the current global challenges only if it used appropriately reviewed training manuals.

They made remarks to that effect soon after Defence and National Service minister Dr Hussein Mwinyi had tabled his ministry’s 2009/10 budget estimates in the august House.

They said it was of crucial importance for a modern-day National Service to approach issues differently, including ensuring that its courses are conducted in a conducive environment and the teaching methodology is in consonance with local conditions.

Long-serving politician Kingunge Ngombale-Mwiru (CCM) cautioned the government against embarking on the reintroduction of mandatory NS training stints for Form Six leavers unless it was satisfied that adequate preparations were made.

Noting that it was difficult for the previous-era NS to work in the current situation, he said: “We need to be well-prepared in all aspects...from what we’ll be teaching and in the way we will be preparing teachers so that they can impart knowledge on issues relevant to the needs and aspirations of our youths.”

“I am saying this because things out there have changed a lot. A number of issues need to be carefully and seriously addressed before the recruitment youths into the programme envisaged, which is expected to involve both males and females,” added the ruling party stalwart.

Ngombale-Mwiru also cited some of the issues to be seriously considered before the resumption of the NS recruitment drive as the impact of HIV/Aids, moral decay, economic crisis and globalisation generally.

He recommended that the programme, halted a decade ago and expected to resume in the 2010/11 financial year, was previously framed in such a way that it used to make Tanzanian youths have self-imposed discipline and demonstrate exemplary patriotism.

“National Service makes youths value and practise patriotism and work for the nation’s interests...That spirit is currently conspicuously absent,” he said.

Another long-serving politician, Anna Abdallah (Special Seats - CCM), underscored the need for the NS to place a premium on vocational training.

“That will afford the youths an opportunity to acquire important skills that will help in making them lead more meaningful lives, including engaging in various forms of self-employment,” she said, adding that the move would also improve food production in the country.

But she noted that it was important for the government to put important facilities and resources to make the programme a success.

“If the government is really serious about helping the National Service to exploit its massive potential to the full, it must allocate it more resources,” she pointed out.

Raha Leo legislator Saleh Farrah (CCM) said it would make a lot of economic and political sense if the NS were used to achieve the government’s goal of improving agriculture through its newly coined ‘Kilimo Kwanza’ (Agriculture First) motto.

Meanwhile, Arumeru West MP Elisa Mollel (CCM) claimed in the House that dishonest or disgruntled retired soldiers were among the people behind the rising wave of crime in the country.

He said it all resulted from problems with the training and incentives available to soldiers “as most were not trained on how they can engage in productive ventures”. “I therefore call upon the government to empower soldiers with skills that can enable them to survive and even prosper in ordinary (civilian) life after they retire,” he added.

The opposition camp in the House appealed to the government to review the regulations guiding pensions and gratuities in the defence and security forces “so that retired soldiers can get their rights without problems”.

Defence and National Service shadow minister Masoud Salim underlined the need for the government to ensure soldiers have life insurance cover “given the nature of their day-to-day duties”.

Dr Mwinyi asked the House to the 443,340,832,000/- budget estimates, of which 395,179,305,000 will be for recurrent expenditure and about 48,161,518,000/- for development purposes. The estimates were endorsed yesterday evening.

Slideshow:Yemenia plane crashes

By George Obulutsa

DAR ES SALAAM (Reuters) – Tanzanian authorities have spotted some 13 bodies believed to be from a Yemeni airliner that crashed into the sea off the Indian Ocean archipelago of Comoros last week, an official said on Tuesday.

"We have a report from the district commissioner in Mafia, sent to the Prime Minister, saying that they have discovered about 13 bodies," said Saidi Nguba, spokesman for Tanzania's prime minister, adding that plane wreckage had been found.

"It is confirmed, according to these reports, that these are remains of a plane," he told Reuters.
Tanzanian police said earlier on Tuesday there were reports of some bodies washing up on Mafia Island off the coast of the east African country, northwest of the crash site.

Only one survivor out of 153 people on board has been found.

Mafia district commissioner Manzie Mangochei told television stations by phone the bodies were found floating around various parts of the island. He said bodies first appeared on Monday but the choppy waters made it difficult to retrieve them.

He said on state-run Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation that what appeared to be plane seats had been recovered and they were trying to verify whether other debris was part of a wing.
Rescue teams have detected a signal from the plane's flight recorders but say it could take a while to reach the wreck as it is in deep water.

Comoran army chief Colonel Ismael Moegni Daho said they had been sent reports of the discoveries by Tanzania and were sending a team of local investigators and aviation experts to Mafia early on Wednesday.

Historia ya Toilet Paper

Wadau, hapa Marekani watu hawawezi kuishi bila toilet paper.

Hata nilipokuwa Tanzania nakumbuka karibu kila sehemu toilet paper ilikuwa inapatikana.

Watu wanasema huenda Palin atagombea urais mwaka 2012.
************************************
WASILLA, Alaska (AP) - Even for a nonconformist, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has defied political logic with her sudden, stunning announcement to leave office more than a year early.
Supporters and critics alike say the former GOP vice presidential candidate's resignation, announced Friday afternoon and effective July 26, is an inexplicable move for a high profile Republican widely seen as a contender for a White House run in 2012. A half-term governor campaigning for president?

"If she is thinking that leaving her term 16 months early is going to help her prepare to maybe go on to bigger and better things on the political stage, I think she's sadly mistaken. You just can't quit," said Andrew Halcro, a Palin critic who lost the 2006 gubernatorial race to her.
