Ghana's newly elected president says it's time for the country to "work together to build a better Ghana."

Opposition leader John Atta Mills has been declared the winner of Ghana's presidency. Election officials are calling it the closest race in the West African nation's history.

It's the third time the 64-year-old tax expert and Fulbright scholar had tried to become president of Ghana. Atta Mills had been vice president under former coup leader Jerry Rawlings, who stepped down in 2001.

He won last Sunday's ballot with 50.23 percent of the vote. Election officials say the Ruling party candidate got 49.77 percent of the vote. A special revote in a single district yesterday secured Atta Mills' victory.
