Police are investigating the death of a 29-year-old Dorchester mother who died after collapsing onto the stairs outside her home early yesterday.

The deceased, identified by family members as Maggie Kigoni, was found by her brother at 6:30 a.m., lying on concrete stairs leading up to the modest three-decker on Callender Street. Kigoni did not have any visible injuries, said several people who witnessed emergency medical technicians perform CPR. The witnesses, who declined to be identified, said Kigoni had left a small pool of blood on the stairs.

Kigoni, the mother of a 3-year-old daughter, was hoisted onto a stretcher and taken to Carney Hospital in Dorchester, where she was pronounced dead.

The Boston Police Homicide Unit is investigating the death, but officials are awaiting an autopsy to make a determination on whether Kigoni was the victim of foul play. Boston Police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said Kigoni suffered an apparent cardiac arrest, but did not say whether that was the single factor leading to her death. The autopsy will probably take several days to complete, Driscoll said.

She added that police were interviewing several people in relation to the case. The Sexual Assault Unit is also involved in the investigation.

As rumors swirled around Callender Street about the cause of Kigoni's death, family members and friends said they remain unclear how she died.

"We just have a lot of questions as to how someone so young and full of life could just die like that," said Marie Jean, Kigoni's sister-in law and best friend. Jean gathered with Kigoni's mother, brother, and other relatives yesterday at the house.

"Maggie dying is tough on the whole family. Her father died just last year from cancer, and now they have to deal with this too," Jean said.

Jean described Kigoni as a flashy dresser who loved to shop, read books, and joke around with friends. Jean said that Sunday night, "We were on her porch, just talking like we always do when there is good weather. She was happy, not worried about anything."

Kigoni grew up in Jamaica Plain. She graduated from the John D. O'Bryant School of Math and Science in 1998.
"Maggie loved the color yellow," Jean said, "so I'll make sure that she has yellow balloons at her funeral."
