Zanzibar International Film Festival 2008





Zanzibar, February 2008 –The Zanzibar International Film Festival has released its programme for the 11th Edition of ZIFF the Festival of the Dhow Countries, to take place between 11th to 20th July this year.


ZIFF will this year welcome top names to the festival proving the status that the festival enjoys in world festival circles., as director Newton Aduaka from Nigeria winner of Etalon Yenenga at FESPACO 2007 confirmed his attendance. Efforts are underway to bring multiple award winner Danny Glover and Charles Burnett with their film Namibia: Struggle for Liberation which is expected to open the festival.

Tanzanian acting circles have applauded plans to bring Ramsey Nouah, the king of Nollywood melodramatic film production who will also conduct acting workshops and show his films at ZIFF! “ZIFF will not have enough space to hold the crowds, should he confirm coming to Zanzibar!”, said a film enthusiast, “Many women have vowed to travel to Zanzibar should the suave actor confirm coming to ZIFF in July”

This year shall carry the theme Cultural Crossroad though which Zanzibar becomes again the crucible of cultural intersections and mutual respect.“Preparations are underway to deliver to our patrons a sumptuous program of films and other cultural offerings befitting the long wait for ZIFF”, said the ZIFF CEO, Dr. Martin Mhando.

Amongst the standout events for the year is the return of the Zanzibar Fensi! This veritable Zanzibari cultural activity has not taken place for over 8 years and this year will see the return of Fensi in its carnival form!

Dr Mhando also announced that Nollywood, the third world largest film feature production industry, will be fĂȘted in Zanzibar during the festival. The impact that Nollywood has had on Africa cinema will also be debated under the Soko Filam program.60 films will be in competitions judged by four International Juries, and currently 4 world Premieres Films have been confirmed.

Amongst the premieres is Tanzanian Josiah Kibira’s Bongoland II which will have its African premiere at the festival.

The ZIFF management again reminded filmmakers that the deadline for entering films into ZIFF 2008 is 31st March.

Ramsey,we are so happy coz of ur visit East Africa.Why don't u come to Kenya as well? I met you once in a nissan year 2006 March 7th while on your way to Lavington and I was going to Kileleshwa.

Ramsey should do movies with Kenyan n Tanzanian actors like they did in Uganda with his colleagues so as to be top in the industry like nollywood.If his songs are ready i wuold like to have a copy pliz.
