Police in Dar es Salaam are holding Tabora Regional Commissioner, Capt (rtd) Ukiwaona Ditopile Mzuzuri for allegedly shooting to death a commuter bus driver. Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander Alfred Tibaigana told a news conference yesterday that Ditopile, who once served the government as deputy minister, allegedly shot Hasani Mbonde (33) in the head, killing him instantly.
According to Tibaigana, police are holding the regional commissioner, as investigations into the killing continues. He said Ditopile, who has been in the public service for many years, having served as RC in a number of regions, allegedly shot the bus driver at around 7.pm, at the junction of Kawe and Bagamoyo roads in Kinondoni District on Saturday.
Tibaigana said Mbonde, a resident of Kawe Mzimuni, was driving a commuter bus an Isuzu Journey with registration number T788 ACC, plying between Ubungo and Tegeta. Detailing on the incident, he said the commuter bus had collided with a Prado vehicle with registration number T816 AJT which was being driven by Nasoro Mohamed (42) a resident of Kijitonyama.
Ditopile was a passenger in the Prado.
The RPC said Ditopile was heading to Bagamoyo from Dar es Salaam, with another passenger whose name could not be immediately be obtained. He said preliminary investigation shows that shortly after the collision, Ditopile’s driver alighted from his vehicle, to establish the extent of the damage.
He discovered a minor damage at the rear of the vehicle.
However, Ditopile also got out of the car to assess the damage, went straight to the commuter bus driver and ordered him out of his vehicle. The driver allegedly refused to budge and shut the door and window of the bus. ”At this juncture, Ditopile drew a pistol and used it to knocked on the window of the bus, insisting that the driver should come out,” Tibaigana explained.
He said in the course of the wrangle, Ditopile allegedly fired at the driver through the glass window and killed him on the spot. Tibaigana said the body of the deceased is being preserved at the Muhimbili National Hospital mortuary. Prior to his appointment as Tabora RC, Ditopile, popularly known as ’Dito’ served as deputy minister in the then Communication and Transport ministry and as RC for Kigoma, Lindi and Coast Region.
